1) India & Russia sign a working plan to handle emergencies

  • India and Russia signed the working plan of the Joint Russian-Indian Commission on the Cooperation in the Field of Emergency Management for 2025-26.
  • Both the countries agreed to implement the plan during 2025-26, and decided to continue exchange of the best practices and lessons learnt in the field of disaster management.
  • This meeting is significant to draw a strategy for executing the previous agreements between India and Russia, such as, Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) for cooperation in the field of Emergency Management in December, 2010, and Regulation to establish the IndoRussian Joint Commission for Cooperation (2013) in prevention and elimination of consequences of emergency situations.

2) Union Cabinet redesign Agri Infra fund to cover FPOs:

  • The Union Cabinet, on Wednesday, expanded the scope of the Agricultural Infrastructure Fund (AIF). The scheme, worth ₹1 lakh crore, would be redesigned to include financial support for Farmers’ Producers Organisations (FPOs) to enhance their financial security and creditworthiness.
  • The Centre said the AIF would be more attractive now and strengthen the farm-related infrastructure facilities in the country.
  • Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) scheme was launched with an objective to mobilize a medium – long term debt financing facility for investment in viable projects for post-harvest management Infrastructure and community farming assets through incentives and financial support in order to improve agriculture infrastructure in the country.

3) Transmission of Chandipura virus possible in coming weeks, warns WHO

  • The current outbreak of the Chandipura virus (CHPV) infection in India is considered the largest in the past 20 years, says the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • While the authorities are making efforts to control the transmission of CHPV, further transmission is possible in the coming weeks, considering the favourable conditions for vector populations during the monsoon season in affected areas, warned the WHO.
  • The WHO has not recommended any general travel or trade restrictions based on the available information. However, it maintained that surveillance efforts should be enhanced in high-risk areas, focusing on people at risk, such as children younger than 15 years presenting with acute onset of fever and central nervous system symptoms.
  • Between early June and August 15, the Health Ministry reported 245 cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), including 82 deaths (case fatality rate 33%). Of these, 64 are confirmed cases of Chandipura virus infection.
  • CHPV is transmitted by vectors such as sandflies, mosquitoes, and ticks.

4) Fixed-Dose Combination : Banned

  • The Indian government has recently banned 156 Fixed-Dose Combination (FDC) drugs.
  • Fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs are medications that combine two or more Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in a single dosage form, such as a pill, capsule, or injection.
  • These drugs are often prescribed for conditions requiring multiple medications, such as tuberculosis, diabetes, and hypertension, to enhance patient compliance by reducing the number of pills taken daily.
  • The rationale for the Ban: The banned FDCs were deemed “irrational” by the central government, as they do not provide any additional therapeutic benefits.

5) Typhoon Shanshan:

  • Typhoon Shanshan has intensified into a “very strong” storm as it approaches Japan’s southwestern coast, prompting warnings from weather agencies.
  • Tropical Cyclone originate over warm ocean waters near the equator. Warm, moist air rises from the ocean surface, creating a low-pressure area.
  • Surrounding higher-pressure air moves towards this low-pressure zone, causing the air to warm up and rise further. As the rising air cools, it forms clouds.
  • This system of spinning clouds and wind intensifies with the ocean’s heat. As wind speeds increase, an eye forms at the centre.

6) Quasar:

  • Using the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers recently identified a quasar described as the “brightest of its kind” and the “most luminous object ever observed.
  • A quasar is an extremely active and luminous type of Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN).
  • An AGN isnothing more than a supermassive black hole that is active and feeding at the center of a galaxy.
  • Quasar is short for quasi-stellar radio source because astronomers first discovered quasars in 1963 as objects that looked like stars but emitted radio waves.

7) Geoglyphs:

  • The Maharashtra government recently declared 1,500 geoglyphs spread across 70 locations in a 210-square-kilometre area of the Ratnagiri district as a ‘protected monument’.
  • A geoglyph refers to a design that is drawn on the earth.
  • Geoglyphs are typically formed of durable elements of the landscape, such as stones, gravel, or earth.
  • A geoglyph is usually longer than four metres.
  • Geoglyphs are difficult to see or even identify on the ground but are easily appreciated when seen from the sky.

8) Ten Years Of Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana:

  • On August 28, 2024, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accomplished a decade, marking a significant milestone in financial inclusion.
  • Accounts increased from 72 crore in March 2015 to 53.13 crore by August 2024.
  • Deposits in PMJDY accounts surged from ₹15,670 crore (March 2015) to over ₹2.31 lakh crore (August 2024).
  • Financial Year 2024-25 target: The government aims to open an additional 3 crore PMJDY accounts.
  • Operative accounts: Out of 173 crores CASA accounts in the country, over 53 crores are PMJDY accounts, with an 80% operation rate.

9) SLIM Moon Mission:

  • Japan’s space agency, JAXA, has concluded operations of its Moon lander, the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM), also known as the “Moon Sniper,” after losing communication with it.
  • This operation was halted after the failure of multiple attempts to establish connection with the SLIM spacecraft.
  • SLIM is a small-scale lunar lander designed for precise landings, reduced equipment size and weight, and investigating the Moon’s origins.
  • It was an uncrewed spacecraft that also aimed to test low-gravity exploration technology essential for future solar system exploration.

10)  Australia & Pacific Leaders Endorse Pacific Policing Initiative to counter China’s Influence

  • In a move aimed at countering China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, along with other Pacific leaders, today endorsed the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI).
  • Marking a significant regional effort to bolster peace and security throughout the region, the PPI has been announced on the sidelines of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders’ Meeting in Tonga.
  • The Initiative is aimed to enhance the capacity of Pacific nations to address law and order challenges, fulfil internal security needs, and provide mutual support in times of crisis.
