1) Kidambi wins bronze medal; Indian women’s cricket team wins silver

  • Kidambi Srikanth won bronze in the men’s badminton singles at the Commonwealth Games, on 7 August 2022.
  • Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand won bronze in the badminton women’s singles after defeating Australia’s Chen Hsuan-Yu Wendy and Gronya Somerville in straight games 21-15, 21-19.
  • Indian women’s cricket team won a silver medal after losing to Australia.

 

2) Para table tennis player Bhavina Patel clinches gold medal in CWG

  • India’s para table tennis player Bhavina Patel won gold medal after defeating Ifechukwude Christiana Ikpeoyi of Nigeria in the women’s singles Classes 3-5 at the Commonwealth – Games 2022 on Aug 06.
  • She dominated Ikpeoyi in straight sets by 3-0 (12-10, 11-2, 11-9).
  • This is her second big medal after the silver at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021.

 

3) AFI celebrates August 7 as National Javelin Day

  • The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) celebrated August 7 as the National Javelin Day to honour Neeraj Chopra.
  • It was on August 7, 2021 that Neeraj produced the 87.58 m effort in Tokyo to secure India’s first track and field gold medal in the Olympic Games.
  • As many as 32 states and Union Territories units affiliated to AFI organised javelin competitions on this day.

 

4) PV Sindhu wins gold in women’s singles final at Commonwealth Games

  • PV Sindhu defeated Michelle Li of Canada in the final badminton match of women’s singles at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, to win a gold on 8 August 2022.
  • She beat Michelle Li by 21-15, 21-13.
  • This is the first-ever Commonwealth Games singles gold of Sindhu’s career.
  • PV Sindhu has earlier won a silver and a bronze from the 2018 and 2014 editions of the event.

6) 12th DefExpo to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in October 2022

  • The 12th edition of DefExpo will be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat between October 18-22, 2022.
  • DefExpo is Asia’s largest exhibition on land, naval and homeland security systems.
  • The theme of DefExpo 2022 is ‘Path to Pride!
  • DefExpo was traditionally held in Delhi until 2014 after which it was organised in new venues Goa (2016), Chennai (2018) and Lucknow (2020).

 

7) Indian Army launches ‘Him Drone-a-thon’ programme

  • The Indian Army in collaboration with the Drone Federation of India launched the ‘Him Drone-a-thon’ programme on 08 August 2022.
  • It is aimed at providing opportunities to the Indian drone ecosystem to develop path-breaking drone capabilities for meeting the requirements of frontline troops.
  • In the 1st phase, drones will be developed for use in Army operations in the Himalayas.

 

8) Satwik & Chirag win India’s 1st gold medal in Men’s Doubles Badminton

  • India’s Satwik Sai Raj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty on 8 August 2022 won the Gold medal in Badminton men’s doubles final at CWG 2022.
  • This is the first ever Indian Men’s Doubles Badminton gold medal at the Commonwealth games.
  • They defeated Ben Lane & Sean Mendy with a score of 0-2 in the final.
  • Earlier, PV Sindhu had won the gold medal in the women’s singles category at the CWG on 8 August.

 

9) Google launches ‘India Ki Udaan’ to celebrate 75 years of independence

  • Google has launched an online project named ‘India Ki Udaan’, to celebrate India’s 75-years journey of independence.
  • Under this project, Google will put up an online exhibition of informative content to showcase India’s contribution and journey in the last 75 years.
  • It was launched by Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy at an event organised in New Delhi on 5 August 2022.

 

10) Dalai Lama honoured with Ladakh’s highest civilian award

  • Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has been honoured with the ‘dPal rNgam Duston’ award the highest civilian honour of Ladakh.
  • He has been honoured for his immense contribution to humanity.
  • The award was conferred by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh.
  • This award marks the celebration of the remarkable contribution and achievement of the heroes of Ladakh.

 

11) 2022 Commonwealth Games: India finishes fourth with 61 medals

  • The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham concluded on 8 August 2022.
  • India finished fourth in the medals tally with 61 medals comprising 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze in the event.
  • India bagged a total of 12 medals in wrestling, the most in any sport in the 2022 Games.
  • Australia topped the medals tally with a total of 178 medals.

 

12) International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: 9 August

  • The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9 August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population.
  • It was first pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994.
  • Theme 2022: “The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge”

 

13) India & US commence joint exercise ‘Vajra Prahar 2022’

  • The 13th Edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise “Vajra Prahar 2022” commenced in Himachal Pradesh’s Bakloh on 8 August 2022.
  • This annual exercise is hosted alternatively between India and the US.
  • The 12th edition was conducted in Washington (USA) in October 2021.
  • This exercise aims to improve interoperability between the special forces of India & US.
