1) World Physiotherapy Day: 8 September

  • World Physiotherapy Day is celebrated on September 8 to recognise the crucial role of physiotherapy in healthcare.
  • Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that focuses on optimising physical function, mobility, and well-being.
  • The World Physiotherapy Day 2023 theme is “Prevention and Management of Osteoarthritis”.
  • In 1996, 8 September was designated as World Physiotherapy Day.

 

2) Indian armwrestlers win 11 medals at World Armwrestling Championship

  • The Indian contingent won 11 medals in the 44th World Armwrestling and 25th Para Armwrestling Championship 2023 held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
  • The team won three gold, six silver and two bronze medals in the championship.
  • Abhas Ranawon the Gold Medal in Left & Right Hand category.
  • In the Para Armwrestling Championship, Harsh Khodiar won a silver medal while Shrimant Jha won bronze.

 

3) Supreme Court of India and Singapore sign MoU For Judicial Cooperation

  • Chief Justice of India, Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, met his Singaporean counterpart, Sundaresh Menon, during his official visit to Singapore.
  • An MoU was signed between the Supreme Court of India and the Supreme Court of Singapore in the field of judicial cooperation.
  • Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India in November 2022.

 

4) International Literacy Day: 8 September

  • International Literacy Day is observed on 8 September every year to make people aware of the importance of literacy.
  • The day was declared by UNESCO in 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference.
  • It was celebrated for the first time in 1967.
  • The theme of 2023 is ‘Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.’

 

5) SBI Card launches ‘SimplySAVE Merchant SBI Card for MSMEs

  • SBI Card has introduced the ‘SimplySAVE Merchant SBI Card’, a specialized credit card tailored for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
  • The card offers interest-free short-term credit to MSME merchants, helping them manage their cash flow effectively.
  • The card operates on the RuPay network, offering wider acceptance and accessibility across various merchant outlets.

 

6) Indian-American physician in UK’s top non-fiction prize longlist

  • A book by Indian-American cancer physician and researcher Dr Siddhartha Mukherjee has been longlisted for the prestigious Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction in London.
  • The book, ‘The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human’ is among the 13-book longlist.
  • His other works include, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer’, which won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize.

 

7) Malini Rajurkar, Hindustani Classical Vocalist, passes away

  • Hindustani classical vocalist Malini Rajurkar, an exponent of Gwalior gharana and a Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee passed away on 6 September 2023.
  • She was an exponent of the Gwalior gharana and was one of the foremost proponents of ‘khayal’ and ‘tappa’ genre.
  • The government of India recognises two types of classical music in India – Carnatic and Hindustani.

 

8) Neeraj Mittal takes charge as Department of Telecom secretary

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Neeraj Mittal as the secretary of the Department of Telecommunications.
  • Neeraj Mittal presently holds the position of principal secretary in the information technology department of Tamil Nadu.
  • He worked as a senior advisor at the World Bank Group and also served as a joint secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

 

9) One Week One Lab programme of CSIR to be organised from 11 September

  • The One Week One Lab programme of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will be organised from the 11th to the 16th of September
  • During the programme, each of the 37 CSIR laboratories, spread across the country, will showcase their research outcomes and achievements.
  • The programme will also include lectures, workshops and exhibitions on various topics related to science.

 

10) SPG Chief AK Sinha, responsible for PM’s protection passes away

  • Arun Kumar Sinha, the Director of the Special Protection Group (SPG), has passed away at the age of 61.
  • Sinha was responsible for providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India.
  • Sinha’s journey in the SPG began in March 2016, and he assumed the role of its 12th director.
  • The Special Protection Group (SPG) was established in 1985.

 

11) Odisha’s Rayagada Shawls and Koraput’s Kala Jeera Rice get GI Tag

  • Odisha’s Rayagada Shawls and ‘Koraput Kalajeera Rice, an aromatic rice variety with nutritional value, have been given Geographical Indications (GI) status.
  • Tribal farmers in Koraput district have been cultivating Koraput Kalajeera Rice for generations, and it is often referred to as the “Prince of Rice.”
  • The Rice is renowned for its black colour and its numerous health benefits.

 

12) PepsiCo to invest Rs 778 crore in setting up new plant in Assam

  • PepsiCo India is investing Rs. 778 crore to set up a food manufacturing plant in Nalbari, Assam.
  • The plant will be built on an area of 44.20 acres and is expected to be completed by 2025.
  • The plant is designed to achieve a 100% diverse workforce, of at least 75% women.
  • The state government has provided various incentives to facilitate the establishment of this plant in Assam.

 

13) HarperCollins India to publish Bhavna Roy’s new book ‘IDOLS’

  • HarperCollins India has announced to publication of the new book ‘IDOLS: Unearthing the Power of Murti Puja’ on October 16th.
  • The book explores the relevance of idol worship in the spiritual lives of religious people.
  • IDOLS is written by Amish Tripathi and Bhavna Roy and is a thought-provoking exploration of murti puja, or idol worshipping, in India and around the world.

 

14) DGCA gives conditional nod to Air India for simulator training

  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given conditional approvalto Air India for simulator training at its Hyderabad, Mumbai facilities
  • The conditional approval is valid for 30 days, during which an internal audit will be conducted and findings shared with the DGCA.
  • Air India will conduct an internal audit within the 30-day period to ensure compliance with regulations.

 

15) Airbus, Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya sign MoU for aerospace research

  • Airbus and Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) have signed an MoU for a partnership in the aerospace sector.
  • The partnership includes the development of academic curricula, faculty, industrial experience, training and scholarships, and collaboration with international institutes.
  • The GSV is a central university under the administrative control of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India.

 

16) India showcases PM Gatishakti Masterplan at ADB’s Regional Conference

  • India showcased PM Gatishakti National Master Plan at the ‘2023 Regional Cooperation and Integration Conference organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Tbilisi, Georgia.
  • The conference aimed to explore ways to integrate spatial transformation and strengthen regional cooperation through a broader approach.
  • Ms Sumita Dawra led the Indian delegation at the conference.

 

17) US announces $600M in new security aid for Ukraine

  • The US Department of Defense has announced a new security assistance package worth $600 million to support Ukraine’s battlefield needs.
  • The package includes 105mm artillery rounds and electronic warfare, and will be provided through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
  • USAI is an authority under which the US procures capabilities from industry or partners.
