- In 1936, Indian State Broadcasting Station was renamed All India Radio (AIR).
- In 1948, Malabar Princess’, Air India’s first international flight took off.
- In 1990, India and Nepal restore normal ties after a 13-month economic blockade.
- In 2018, World’s most powerful supercomputer, Summit, was launched.
3) World Brain Tumour Day: 8 June
- World Brain Tumour Day, observed on June 8, raises awareness about brain tumours.
- Brain tumours are the fourth most serious and widespread disease worldwide.
- In 2010, the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA) designated June 8 as World Brain Tumour Day.
- The theme for World Brain Tumour Day 2023 is “Protect yourself – keep away from stress”.
4) World Oceans Day: 8 June
- World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8 June every year to aware people to stop polluting the ocean, and water bodies.
- The day was first proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- The theme of 2023 is “Planet Ocean: The Tides are Changing.”
5) Tata Elxsi partners with ISRO to develop crew recovery models
- Tata Elxsi has partnered with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for the upcoming Gaganyaan Mission.
- It has designed and developed the crew module recovery models (CMRM) for the recovery team training of the space mission.
- The CMRMs simulate the mass, center of gravity, outer dimensions, interfaces, and externals of the actual crew module.
6) Award-winning Doordarshan news anchor Gitanjali Aiyar passes away
- Gitanjali Aiyar, one of India’s first female news presenters on national broadcaster Doordarshan, passed away on 7 June 2023.
- She was in her mid-70s and had won the best anchor award four times.
- Aiyar graduated from Kolkata’s Loreto College and joined Doordarshan in 1971.
- Aiyar won the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989.
7) Union Cabinet approves third revival package for BSNL
- The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister has approved the 3rd revival package for BSNL with a total outlay of Rs 89047 cr.
- The package includes an allotment of 4G/5G spectrum for BSNL through equity infusion and an increase in authorized capital.
- With this revival package, BSNL aims to provide connectivity to the remotest parts of India and emerge as a stable telecom service provider.
8) Union Min Parshottam Rupala to start VII Phase of Sagar Parikarma
- Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, will start the VII phase of “Sagar Parikrama” on 8 June 2023.
- Sagar Parikrama Phase-VII shall cover the coastal areas of Kerala and UT Administration of Lakshadweep.
- The journey of the first phase of Sagar Parikrama started from Mandvi, Gujarat, on 5th March 2022.
9) Health ministry unveils food safety index, Kerala topped the list
- Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya unveiled the fifth State Food Safety Index.
- Among the larger states, Kerala topped the ranking, followed by Punjab and Tamil Nadu.
- Among the smaller states, Goa topped the list, followed by Manipur and Sikkim.
- Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, and Chandigarh secured the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranks respectively among the union territories.
10) 8th Meeting of Standing Committee of ISO held in New Delhi
- The eighth meeting of the Standing Committee of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) was held in New Delhi on June 6, 2023.
- Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy R. K. Singh chaired the meeting.
- The ISA discussed various initiatives such as ISA Demonstration Projects and ISA SolarX Startup Challenge.
- The ISA is an international organization with 93 Member countries.
11) Govt launches Nyaya Vikas Portal for Monitoring of Judiciary scheme
- The Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice for Judicial Infrastructure has developed the Nyaya Vikas Portal, to facilitate better delivery of judicial infrastructural projects.
- It aims to improve the justice delivery system in the country by providing real-time information on the progress of infrastructure development projects.
