1) Indian Athletics Grand Prix 3 & 4 shifted to Bhubaneswar from Madurai

  • The Indian Grand Prix 3 and 4, which were originally scheduled to be held in Madurai, will now be organized in Bhubaneswar on May 21 and 24, 2022.
  • The IGP 3 and 4 were originally to be held in Madurai on May 17 and 21 respectively.
  • There will be 17 events in both the meets which include nine for women and eight for men.

 

2) Railways Ministry signs pact with C-DOT

  • The Ministry of Railways has signed an MoU with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).
  • It has been signed for the modernization of telecommunication facilities related to operations and safety.
  • The agreement is aimed at establishing a collaborative working partnership between the ministry and C-DOT for coordination and resource sharing.

 

3) World Red Cross Day: 8 May

  • World Red Cross Day, also known as Red Crescent Day, is celebrated on May 8 every year.
  • This date marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, who is the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
  • He is also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • He was born on May 8, 1828.
  • The theme of World Red Cross Day 2022 is ‘BeHumankind.

 

4) Nirmala Sitharaman launches NSDL’s investor awareness programme

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 7 May 2022 launched the National Securities Depository Limited’s (NSDL) investor awareness programme for students.
  • The programme named ‘Market Ka Eklavya’ is an online investor awareness programme for students in Hindi and other regional languages.
  • She also released a new publication ‘My Stamp’ and special cover, honouring NSDL’s contribution.

 

5) Maharashtra approves first-of-its-kind gene bank project at 172 crore

  • Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the ‘Maharashtra Gene Bank’, a first-of-its-kind project in India.
  • The Maharashtra Gene Bank is unique because it authenticates traditional knowledge by scientific institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, and the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa.

 

6) IRS Officer Sangeeta Singh gets additional charge of CBDT Chairman

  • Sangeeta Singh, a 1986 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer has been given additional charge of Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
  • Incumbent JB Mohapatra retired as the head of the direct taxes administration body on Apr 30, 2022.
  • Mohapatra, a 1985-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Income Tax department, was appointed as the full-time Chairman in Sept 2021.

 

7) India accounts for largest number of real-time transactions

  • According to a report by ACI Worldwide, with 48 bn, India accounted for the largest number of real-time transactions in the world in 2021.
  • This was nearly three times that of nearest challenger China, and 6.5 times that of the US, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany, combined.
  • Real-time payments accounted for 31.3% of the overall payments transaction volume in India in 2021.

 

8) JioSaavn appoints former Amazon Music Director Sahas Malhotra as CEO

  • Music app firm JioSaavn has appointed former Amazon Music director and entertainment industry veteran Sahas Malhotra as its new CEO.
  • Malhotra has earlier worked with Sony Music India and Tips Industries.
  • At Tips Industries, Sahas was leading the business at Tips Music and marketing for Tips Film production.

 

9) Global Crypto Adoption Index by Chainalysis released

  • Global Crypto Adoption Index has been released by crypto analytics firm Chainalysis.
  • United States topped the charts with an estimated realized gain of $49.95 billion, followed by the United Kingdom (UK) with estimated realized gains of $8.16 billion.
  • India was at 21st position with an estimated realized gain of $1.85 billion.

11) Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur flags off two new projects

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur laid the foundation stone of 2 new projects on 7 May 2022.
  • The foundation stone was laid on the occasion of the 61st Foundation Day of Sports Authority of India’s Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports – Patiala (NSNIS).
  • This is part of the revamping of NSNIS Patiala wherein govt is investing more than Rs 150 cr in 3 yrs.

13) Amit Shah launches ‘CAPF Punarvaas’ through (WARB)

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs under the direction of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched ‘CAPF Punarvaas, through the Welfare & Rehabilitation Board (WARB).
  • The portal will help retired personnel seeking re-employment to find an appropriate match by uploading their personal details on the WARB website along with their area of expertise and preferred employment location.

 

14) India and UK conclude 3rd round of FTA talks

  • India and the UK concluded the third round of talks for the proposed free trade agreement in New Delhi in May 2022 covering ground on key areas.
  • The two sides hope to sign the interim deal by October 2022.
  • In the two rounds of negotiations that began in January 2022, India and the UK have managed to close four out of 26 chapters in the FTA (Free trade Agreement).

 

15) Kami Sherpa summits Mt Everest for 26th time, beats own record

  • Beating his own previous record set in 2021, Nepal’s Kami Rita Sherpa has climbed Mount Everest for the 26th time.
  • He scaled the 8,848.86-metre (29,031.69-foot) mountain on 7 May 2022.
  • Rita scaled Mt Everest for the first time on May 13, 1994.
  • He has also scaled Mt Godwin-Austen (K2), Mt Lhotse, Mt Manaslu and Mt Cho Oyu.
  • He also holds the record for most climbs over 8000 metres.

 

16) Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti: 7 May

  • The 161st birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore is being observed on May 7, 2022.
  • Gurudev, a name given to him by Mahatma Gandhi, became the first Indian and the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his work, Gitanjali.
  • He is the only one to have written the national anthems of three countries – India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
  • He passed away in 1941.

 

17) Amit Shah to launch several development projects in Assam

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to Assam on 9 May 2022.
  • He will lay the foundation stone for the Central Workshop and Stores of Central Armed Police Forces and state police in the North Eastern States.
  • He will confer the President’s Colour Medal to the Assam Police at a special parade in Guwahati and will interact with the Officers and Jawans of Assam Police.

 

18) Centre appoints of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia as SC judges

  • The Central govt has notified the appointments of Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Gujarat High Court judge Justice Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala, as the judges of the Supreme Court.
  • Justice Dhulia will be the 2nd Judge to be elevated from Uttarakhand High Court.
  • Justice Pardiwala will be the 4th Parsi to adorn the bench of the Supreme Court and have a tenure of about 2 yrs.
