1) Maharashtra’s Jivhala’ scheme launched for jail inmates

  • The Maharashtra Department of Prisons has launched a loan scheme for inmates serving sentences in jails across the state.
  • The credit scheme titled Jivhala is being offered by the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank.
  • The pilot was introduced for prisoners at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune, and will gradually be extended to nearly 60 prisons across the state.

 

2) NHAI signs two MoUs in Lucknow to enhance highway infrastructure

  • National Highways Authority of India held a two-day regional conference in Lucknow in May 2022.
  • A first-of-its-kind MoU was signed between NHAI and State Rural Livelihood Mission, Uttar Pradesh to involve the self-help groups in taking up the plantations along the National Highways.
  • The second MoU was signed between NHAI and AMMANN India Pvt Ltd.

 

3) India’s fertility rate decreases to 2 from 2.2

  • India’s total fertility rate (TFR) has declined from 2.2 children in 2015-16 to 2 children per woman now, the latest edition of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) showed.
  • The TFR is currently below the replacement level of fertility of 2.1 children per woman.
  • According to the report, the median age at first birth among women aged 25-49 is 21.2 years.

 

4) Centre releases policy guidelines on pharma innovations, academia

  • The Department of Pharmaceuticals released guidelines on pharmaceutical innovation and entrepreneurship for academic institutions on 6 May 2022.
  • These policy guidelines aims to transform academic research into innovative and commercially applicable technologies.
  • This will also build a strong ecosystem for entrepreneurial activities and contribute to self-reliant India mission.

 

5) 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship begins

  • The 12th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2022 began on May 6 in Bhopal, MP.
  • A total of 27 teams will vie for top honors in the 12-day tournament.
  • The participating teams have been divided into. eight pools.
  • After 8 days of pool matches, the quarter-finals will be played on May 14, the semi-finals will be held on May 16 and the medal matches are scheduled for 17 May.

 

6) PNB hikes lending rate by 40 bps

  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) has hiked its external benchmark linked lending rate by 0.40 percent to 6.90 percent with effect from 1 Jun’22.
  • For new customers, the revised Repo Linked Lending Rate will be effective from May 7.
  • PNB also increased the savings deposit rates for various tenors.
  • For term deposits of less than Rs 2 crore, it has raised the interest rates to up to 5.10-5.15 percent.

 

7) World’s first plant-based Covid vaccine 70% effective against Covid

  • The world’s first plant-based Covid-19 vaccine is found to be 70% effective against five variants of coronavirus.
  • It has been developed by the Canadian biotechnology company Medicago.
  • The vaccine, named Covifenz, contains coronavirus-like particles (COVLP) produced in plants which are combined with an adjuvant (ASO3) that helps vaccines work better.

 

8) Italian Foreign Minister arrives in Delhi on his first visit to India

  • Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio arrived in India on 5 May 2022 to enhance the multifaceted partnership with India.
  • This is his first visit to India.
  • The External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held bilateral talks with him on 6 May 2022.
  • He also met Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and co-chair a business round-table.

 

10) Sagarmala programme enhanced to Rs 6.5 lakh crore

  • As many as 1,537 projects at an estimated cost of around Rs 6.5 lakh crore have been identified for implementation as a part of the Sagarmala programme.
  • For holistic development of coastal districts, 567 projects have been identified under convergence mode with an estimated cost of Rs 58,700 crore.
  • More than 200 projects worth Rs 2.12 lakh crore are expected to be completed in 2 years’ time.

11) Haryana government approves new excise policy

  • Haryana govt has approved a new exercise policy for the financial year 2022-23.
  • Under this, the liquor vends shall be auctioned through e-tender of retail zones (comprising of maximum 4 retail shops).
  • In the new policy the import duty on wine was slashed from 7 to 2 per bulk litre.
  • The Letter of Intent fee for establishing wine manufactory was also slashed down from *15 lakh to 1 lakh.

 

12) Pfizer inaugurates global drug development centre in IIT Madras

  • Pfizer has set up a global drug development centre at the IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai.
  • This is first of its kind in Asia.
  • The centre’s capabilities will include the development of both, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished dosage forms of differentiated products.
  • Pfizer has invested USD 20 million in the 61,000 sq ft research and technology centre.

 

13) PM addresses the inaugural session of ‘JITO Connect 2022’

  • PM Narendra Modi addressed the inaugural session of Jain International Trade Organisation’s JITO Connect 2022′ on 6 May 2022.
  • It is a three-day event being organized in Pune from May 6-8, 2022.
  • JITO is a global organization connecting Jains worldwide.
  • JITO Connect is an endeavor to help the industry by providing an avenue for mutual networking and personal interactions.

 

14) ARPI, CUTS and IIITB to work together on ethical framework for 6G

  • CUTS International has signed agreements with the Australian Risk Policy Institute and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore.
  • They will develop an ethical framework for 6G technology.
  • CUTS International has bagged a grant under the second round of the Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership (AICCTP) programme for its project ‘Ethical 6G!

 

15) India-UK hold Commonwealth Dialogue at Director General level

  • India-UK Commonwealth Dialogue at Director-General level was held in New Delhi on 5 May 2022.
  • The Indian delegation was led by Prakash Gupta, Joint Secretary in UN- Political Division along with officials from the Ministry of External Affairs.
  • The UK delegation was led by Jo Lomas, UK Commonwealth Envoy, and officials from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

 

16) L&T Info, Mindtree merger announced

  • L&T Infotech (LTI) and Mindtree board of directors have approved a composite scheme of amalgamation of both these independently listed IT services companies under the Larsen & Toubro Group.
  • With that, Mindtree will be merging with LTI.
  • Mindtree chief Debashis Chatterjee will head the combined entity of “LTIMindtree”, as L&T Infotech CEO and MD Sanjay Jalona resigned for personal reasons.

 

17) RBI imposes penalty on two financial service providers

  • The RBI on 6 May 2022 imposed a penalty of Rs 5 lakh each on Daimler Financial Services India and KKR India Financial Services.
  • They have been fined for non-compliance with directions related to ‘monitoring of frauds in NBFCs!
  • RBI conducted a statutory inspection of the two companies with reference to their financial position as on March 31, 2020.

 

18) Tata Motors reappoints Om Prakash Bhatt as Additional Director

  • Tata Motors has reappointed former SBI Chairman Om Prakash Bhatt as an additional director till March 7, 2026.
  • His second consecutive term will begin from May 9, 2022.
  • Earlier, he was appointed as a non-executive independent director from May 9, 2017 for a term of five years up to May 8, 2022.

 

19) Govt releases revenue deficit grant of 7,183 cr released to 14 states

  • The Finance Ministry on 6 May 2022 released the second monthly installment of the Post Devolution Revenue Deficit (PDRD) Grant of 7,183 crore to 14 states.
  • The grant has been released as per the recommendations of the Fifteenth Finance Commission.
  • The recommended grant will be released by the department of expenditure to the recommended states in 12 equated monthly installments.

 

20) Railway Protection Force (RPF) signs MoU with AVA

  • Railway Protection Force (RPF) has signed an MoU with Association for Voluntary Action (AVA) for a trafficking-free nation.
  • AVA, also known as Bachpan Bachao Andolan, associated with Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation was founded in 1979.
  • Railway Protection Force is entrusted with the responsibility of security of railway property, passenger area, and passengers.
