1) Ronnie O’Sullivan wins record seventh World Snooker title

  • Ronnie O’Sullivan won a record seventh World Snooker Championship crown after beating Judd Trump 18-13 in the final, in May 2022.
  • With this title, O’Sullivan has equaled Stephen Hendry’s modern-day record of seven world titles.
  • Hendry remains snooker’s youngest-ever world champion, winning in 1990 at the age of 21, and had claimed an unprecedented five world titles in a row.

 

2) Welspun Corp bags Rs 706 crore order from IOCL

  • Welspun Corp Ltd (WCL) has received an order from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) of approximately 48,000 MT, valued at Rs 706 crore.
  • The order will be executed during FY 2022-23.
  • The IOCL order is for a large section of the Mundra Panipat Crude Oil Pipeline (P25) Project which will be constructed to augment the crude oil intake for IOCL’s Panipat refinery expansion project.

 

3) Alkesh Kumar Sharma assumes charge as new Secretary of MeitY

  • Alkesh Kumar Sharma assumed charge as Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology on 5 May 2022.
  • He is an Indian Administrative Services Officer of the 1990 batch, from the Kerala cadre.
  • He has earlier served as Additional Secretary and Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India.
  • He also served as the CMD the National Industrial Corridor Development Corp Ltd.

 

4) India’s medical inflation in 2021 highest among Asian countries

  • The demand for health insurance in India remained strong in FY22, with an overall growth of 25%.
  • This was revealed in the Indian Health Insurance report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services Limited.
  • Among Asian countries in 2021, India had seen the highest medical inflation rate of 14%, followed by China (12%), Indonesia (10%), Vietnam (10%), and the Philippines (9%).

 

5) Kamalpreet Kaur suspended after testing positive for a drug

  • Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after testing positive for a banned steroid.
  • She will face the prospect of being banned for a maximum period of four years if she is found guilty.
  • Kaur holds the national record of 65.06m which she had achieved in 2021.
  • She had finished sixth in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

 

6) Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor appointed as Director General of IAF

  • Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor has been appointed as the Director-General (Inspection and Safety) of Indian Air Force at Air HQ New Delhi.
  • He is a recipient of Vayu Sena Medal and Ati Vishist Seva Medal.
  • He was Commandant of National Defence Academy, Pune prior to assuming the appointment.
  • He has served as Head of the Faculty and Senior Air Force Instructor at College of Defence Management.

 

7) Apple, Google, Microsoft join hands

  • Apple, Google, and Microsoft have announced a collaborative effort on May 5, 2022.
  • They will adopt cross-platform compatibility for logging in to sites and services without the need to enter unique passwords everywhere.
  • They would begin supporting industry standards for passwordless logins set by industry body, Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

 

8) Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022 inaugurated

  • Union Minister for MSME Narayan Rane inaugurated the ‘Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022’ on 5 May 2022.
  • It is being organized under the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
  • Coir industry awards were distributed to 44 coir and coir products manufacturing /exporting units.
  • A ‘Run for Coir’ is also being organized on 6 May 2022 to promote the use of coir.

 

9) WB signs MoU with Flipkart to create pool of supply chain operators

  • Flipkart has signed an MoU with Paschim Banga Society of Skill Development.
  • It will impart industry training to youths to help create a pool of skilled supply chain operators in West Bengal.
  • After completing the course and assessment, successful candidates will be given an opportunity to do on-the-job training at a Flipkart facility for 45 days as trainees at a stipend of Rs 17,500.

 

10) Indian Coast Guard commissions its second ALH Mk III Squadron in Kochi

  • Coast Guard on 4 May 2022, commissioned its second Air Squadron, 845 Squadron (CG), at the Coast Guard Air Enclave at Nedumbassery in Kochi.
  • The new Air Squadron is equipped with the indigenously developed Advanced Mark III (ALH Mark III) helicopters.
  • The Squadron, led by Commandant Kunal Naik has nine officers and 35 men.
  • Indian Coast Guard is celebrating 46th Raising Day on 01 Feb 2022.

11) Cameroonian activist wins Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award 2022

  • Activist Cécile Ndjebet, of Cameroon, won the 2022 Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award on 5 May 2022.
  • She was awarded in recognition of her outstanding contribution to preserving forests and improving the lives of people who depend on them.
  • It was presented by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) which is chaired by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).

 

12) World’s largest film restoration project announced

  • Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Singh Thakur has announced that the world’s largest film restoration project with a budget of Rs 363 crores was awarded on 4th May 2022 by the Ministry.
  • It was launched under the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM).
  • Under NFHM, approximately 2,200 films will undergo restoration.

 

13) Two Indian-American technocrats among top 50 IT leaders of the year

  • Two Indian-American technocrats, Krishna Kumar Edathil from Texas and Nikhil Deshpande from Georgia, have made it to the coveted StateScoop Top 50 2022 list.
  • The StateScoop 50 Awards annually honor best and brightest who make state government more efficient and effective.
  • While Edathil has been named State IT Leader of the Year, Deshpande has been declared the State Leadership of the Year.

 

14) Coal Miners Day: 4 May

  • Coal Miners Day is observed annually on 4 May.
  • The day honors the accomplishments and sacrifices made by coal mine workers so far.
  • The first-ever coal mine was opened in 1575 by one George Bruce of Carnock, Scotland.
  • In India, the coal mining business began in 1774.
  • It was when the East India Company exploited the Raniganj coalfield which is located in the Asansol and Durgapur region.

 

15) IIT Bombay ties up with India Meteorological Department

  • IIT Bombay has tied up with the Indial Meteorological Department (IMD) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MOES).
  • It will develop climate solutions for the stakeholder at the village, city, and district levels.
  • The collaboration will help the institute to develop sensors and drone-based smart monitoring systems, climate-smart agriculture technology for water and food security, etc.

 

16) Wipro and HFCL announce 5G product development partnership

  • Wipro and Indian telecom equipment manufacturer HFCL Limited have entered into a partnership to engineer a variety of 5G transport products.
  • The products include cell site routers and centralized and distributed unit aggregation routers.
  • Wipro will leverage Tarang Labs, its product compliance and certification labs in Bangalore, for hardware integration, validation, and pre-certification.

 

17) World Portuguese Language Day: 5 May

  • The Council of Ministers of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) originally began observing a Day of the Portuguese Language and Culture in May5.
  • In 2019, UNESCO changed it to World Portuguese Language Day.
  • This was the 1st time an unofficial UNESCO language was given this honour.
  • CPLP is an intergovernmental organization that has been in partnership with UNESCO since 2000.

 

18) Tata Power Solar gets 5,500 crore order from SJVN

  • Tata Power Solar Systems has bagged India’s largest solar engineering procurement and construction order for 1 GW project worth 5,500 cr from SJVN Ltd.
  • The project will be developed under the CPSU (central public sector undertaking) scheme of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
  • Covering 5,000 acres of land in Rajasthan, this project aims at reducing around 22,87,128 kg of carbon emission.
