1) Geoffrey Emmanuel first Indian to compete in FIM JuniorGP
- Geoffrey Emmanuel will make his debut in the FIM JuniorGP World Championship in Portugal in May 2023.
- He will be the first Indian to compete in the championship, which is considered a crucial stepping stone to MotoGP.
- Geoffrey will race for Cuna De Campeones in his maiden FIM JuniorGP season.
- The first round of the 2023 season is scheduled for May 5-7 at the Circuit de Estoril in Portugal.
2) South Africa fast bowler Shabnim Ismail ends international career
- Fast bowler Shabnim Ismail has announced her retirement from international cricket.
- Ismail played in 241 international matches across one-day Internationals, Twenty20s and tests.
- She broke the record for the fastest ball recorded in women’s cricket during that tournament when she was clocked at 128 kph (80 mph) against England in the semi-finals.
3) Karnataka ranked the most ‘innovative’ State
- A survey on the degree of innovation. among manufacturing firms found that Karnataka, overall, is the most “innovative” state.
- It was followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu (DNH&DD), Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.
- Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu had the highest share of innovative firms at 46.18%,39.10% and 31.90%, respectively.
4) NTPC marks its first overseas capacity addition
- NTPC has marked its first overseas capacity addition, beginning with Bangladesh.
- The Group recently added Unit-1, a 660 MW capacity, of the 1320 MW (2×660) Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant (MSTPP) located in Rampal, Mongla, Bangladesh.
- It takes the Installed capacity of NTPC to 72304 MW.
- The project was executed in collaboration with the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Pvt Ltd.
5) Shantanu Thakur flags off MV-ITT LION (V-273)
- Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shantanu Thakur flagged off MV-ITT LION (V-273) from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata as the inaugural shipment to operationalise the Sittwe Port in Rakhine State of Myanmar.
- The Port has been built under a grant assistance from the Government of India as part of Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP).
6) Logo, mascot of Khelo India University Games 2022 to be launched
- Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur will launch the Logo, jersey, mascot and anthem of the Khelo India University Games 2022 (KIUG 2021) at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow on 5th May.
- The 3rd edition of the Khelo India University Games will take place from May 23 to June 3, 2023.
- The opening ceremony is scheduled for May 25.
7) Telangana Govt to introduce insurance scheme for toddy tappers
- Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is set to introduce the ‘Geetha Karmikula Bhima’ (insurance for toddy tappers) on the lines of Rythu Bhima for farmers, which is currently being implemented in the state.
- Insurance money of Rs 5 lakh would be deposited directly in the bank account of the respective family members in case any toddy tapper dies accidentally.
8) Rajnath Singh lays foundation stone of special hub for Maldives
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Maldivian counterpart Mariya Didi laid the foundation of a harbour for the coast guard of Maldives at Sifavaru to boost its maritime security capabilities.
- India and the Maldives had signed a pact for the development of the coast guard facility in 2021 when New Delhi also extended a $50 million line of credit to the Maldives for defence projects.
9) Olympic gold medalist Tori Bowie passes away
- American sprinter Tori Bowie, a three-time Olympic medalist and a two-time world champion in track and field, passed away in May 2023.
- Bowie, who also won an Olympic 200m bronze and gold in the 4x100m relay at the Rio Games.
- She earned gold medals in the women’s 4×400 m relays at both the 2016 Olympic Games and 2017 World Championships.
10) India among the most dangerous places in the world for activists
- A report released by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre has put India and Brazil as among the most dangerous places in the world for human rights and labour activists.
- As per the report, Brazil topped the list with recorded 63 attacks against activists in 2022, followed by India with 54 attacks and Mexico with 44 attacks.
- Other countries included are Cambodia, Philippines, and Honduras.
