1) Former India all-rounder Salim Durani passes away at the age of 88

  • Former India cricketer Salim Durani passed away on 2 April 2023, at the age of 88.
  • He was instrumental in India defeating England 2-0 in the historic five-match Test series in 1961-62.
  • He featured in 29 Test matches for team India and scored 1,202 runs with an average of 25.04.
  • He picked up 75 wickets and 6/73 remained. his best bowling figure in an inning.

 

2) ISRO successfully conducts test of RLV autonomous landing mission

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully conducted the Reusable Launch Vehicle Autonomous Landing Mission from the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) in Karnataka’s Chitradurga on 2 April 2023.
  • RLV is a space plane with a low lift-to-drag ratio requiring an approach at high glide angles that necessitated a landing at high velocities of 350 km/h.

 

3)  BoM inaugurates its first dedicated Branch for Start-ups in Pune

  • Bank of Maharashtra (BOM), on 2 April 2023, inaugurated its first dedicated Branch for start-ups in Pune, Maharashtra.
  • The dedicated branch will provide all kinds of support to a startup during its growth journey.
  • During the event Bank of Maharashtra signed an MoU with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) venture capital for proactive financing of start-ups.

 

4) Dr RG Patel appointed as expert member of ART and Surrogacy Board

  • Renowned gynecologist and obstetrician, Dr. RG Patel, on 2 April 2023, was appointed as an expert member of the National Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy Board by the union health ministry.
  • The board functions under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
  • It was formed under the Assisted Reproductive Technology & Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021.

 

5) Malayalam novelist and short story writer Sarah Thomas passes away

  • Noted short story writer and novelist Sarah Thomas passed away on 1 April 2023.
  • She has written 17 novels and more than 100 short stories.
  • She has won many awards, including the Kerala Sahitya Academy award.
  • Sarah Thomas’s novel ‘Muripadukal’ was made into a movie by PA Bakker called ‘Manimuzhakkam!
  • Her novels Asthamayam, Pavizhamuthu, and Archana have also been adapted into films.

 

6) India’s current account deficit narrows to 2.2% of GDP in 3rd quarter

  • As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s current account deficit declined to USD 18.2 billion of the Gross domestic product (GDP) in the December quarter of the fiscal year 2022-23.
  • Net foreign portfolio investment reported inflows of $4.6 billion in the December quarter as against an outflow of $5.8 billion in the third. quarter of 2021-22.

 

7) Rajib K Mishra takes over as Chairman & Managing Director of PTC India

  • Rajib K Mishra took over as the Chairman and Managing Director of Power Trading Corporation of India (PTC) Limited on 30 March 2023.
  • He started working at PTC India Ltd. as the Executive Director in October 2011, overseeing operations, business development, retail and advisory services.
  • He later joined the PTC Board as the Director of Marketing and Business Development on February 24, 2015.

 

8) Indian-origin Amit Kshatriya to head NASA’s new Moon to Mars mission

  • Indian-American software and robotics engineer, Amit Kshatriya, was appointed as the first head of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA’s) Moon to Mars Programme.
  • The new office aims to carry out the agency’s human exploration activities on the Moon and Mars for the benefit of humanity.
  • He has previously served as the director of the Space Launch System, Orion.

 

9) Vice Admiral SJ Singh takes charge as new Vice Chief of Indian Navy

  • Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh assumed the appointment of the Vice Chief of Naval Staff on 01 Apr 2023.
  • He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Pune, and was commissioned in 1986 in the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy.
  • In recognition of his distinguished service, the Flag Officer was awarded the Nao Sena Medal in 2009, and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2020.

 

10) 2nd G20 Employment Working Group meeting begins in Guwahati, Assam

  • The second G20 Employment Working Group (EWG) meeting began on 3 April 2023 in Guwahati, Assam.
  • The Summit will focus on three critical areas of global skill gaps; gig and platform economy and social protection and sustainable financing of social security.
  • Foreign delegates, members from 19 member countries, and guest countries participate in the event.
