3) India, Austria held 7th round of Foreign office consultation in Delhi
- The 7th round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Austria was held in New Delhi on 30 May 2023.
- Both sides discussed furthering relations in sectors such as trade and investments, defense, and education.
- Both countries had signed the Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Agreement which aims to facilitate the legal movement of people between India and Austria.
4) Sri Lanka’s National Poson Week begins
- In Sri Lanka, the National Poson Week begins today.
- The Poson festival will be held till 6th of June and will center around Mihinthalaya, Thanthirimalaya and the Anuradhapura Sacred City.
- The festival celebrates the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Emperor Ashoka’s son Arahat Mahinda in 236 BC.
5) Chaman Lal elected 1st-ever Indian-origin Lord Mayor of Birmingham
- Councillor Chaman Lal, on 30 May 2023, become the first ever British-Indian Sikh to take oath as Birmingham’s Lord Mayor.
- Lal, who is from the Ravidassia community of British Sikhs, was born in the village of Pakhowal in Hoshiarpur and later moved to the United Kingdom in 1964.
- He is a Labour Party leader who was first elected to Soho and Jewellery Quarter ward in 1994.
6) India extends $1 billion credit line to Sri Lanka till March 2024
- India, on 30 May 2023, extended by a year a $1-billion credit facility provided to the Sri Lankan govt.
- An Amendment Agreement was signed to extend the tenure of a USD 1 billion Credit Facility in Sri Lanka.
- The credit line has been extended until March 2024, providing further financial support to Sri Lanka.
- India is assisting Sri Lanka with a comprehensive package of USD 4 billion.
7) UAE announces 13 year Space Mission to explore asteroid belt
- The United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 30 May 2023, announced plans for a groundbreaking space mission called MBR Explorer.
- The mission will explore the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and will be launched in March 2028.
- The mission will cover a distance of 5 billion kilometers over a 13-year expedition.
- The MBR Explorer will conduct close flybys of seven asteroids in the belt.
8) Maha farmers to get Rs 6000/yr under a new scheme approved by Cabinet
- The Maharashtra govt rolled out a new financial scheme on 30 May 2023, under which more than one crore farmers in the state will be paid 6,000 rupees annually.
- The scheme, Namo Shetkari Mahasanman Yojana, was approved at a Cabinet meeting chaired by CM Eknath Shinde.
- It is an all-inclusive crop insurance scheme and will be implemented through a tender process for a period of three years.
9) World No Tobacco Day: 31 May
- Anti-Tobacco Day or World No Tobacco Day is observed on 31 May every year across the globe to make people aware and educate them about the harmful effects of tobacco on health.
- The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic.
- The 2023 year’s theme for World No Tobacco Day is ‘We need food, not tobacco.’
10) World Health Organization (WHO)
- The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations. responsible for international public health.
- Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it has six regional offices and 150 field offices worldwide.
- The WHO was established on 7 April 1948.
- The current director-general is Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia.

11) UP Hockey wins 13th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship
- Uttar Pradesh Hockey won the 13th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2023 after defeating the Hockey Association of Odisha in the Final at the iconic Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Odisha.
- Uttar Pradesh Hockey won the tournament by defeating the Hockey Association of Odisha 7-1.
12) Naveen Patnaik govt announces new housing scheme in Odisha
- On the fourth anniversary of his current five-year term, chief minister Naveen Patnaik-led cabinet cleared a new rural housing scheme ‘Mo Ghara’ targeting those left out in Central and state schemes.
- The government plans to spend Rs 2,150 crore over the next two years benefitting four lakh families under the scheme.
13) China launches 3 astronauts to Tiangong space station
- In China, three astronauts, including a civilian, were launched to the Tiangong space station onboard Shenzhou-16.
- The civilian, Beihang University professor Gui Haichao, was put into orbit for the first time in space.
- Shenzhou-16 is the first mission to Tiangong since it entered the application and development stage.
- Tiangong is the crown jewel of China’s space programme.
14) MS Dhoni becomes first Indian to record 300 dismissals
- MS Dhoni became the first Indian to record 300 dismissals in T20 cricket.
- The CSK captain also leads the wicketkeeping charts in the IPL with 180 dismissals in 243 innings, with 138 catches and 42 stumping.
- Dhoni also became the first player to feature in 250 IPL matches during the match.
