1) Nand Mulchandani appointed 1st-ever Chief Tech Officer of CIA

  • The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has announced the appointment of Nand Mulchandani as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
  • CIA is the first line of defence for the United States.
  • Before joining the intelligence agency, Mulchandani served as the CTO and acting director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Centre under the US Department of Defence.

 

2) Karnataka approves 60 projects worth *2,465.94 crores

  • The Karnataka government has approved 60 industrial projects worth 2,465.94 crores that would generate over 8,575 jobs in the state.
  • Among these are 10 important large and medium-size industrial projects with investments of more than 50 crores.
  • The decision was taken at the 131st State Level Single Window Clearance Committee (SLSWCC) meeting.

 

3) Snow leopard conservationist Charudutt Mishra wins Whitley Gold Award

  • Noted snow leopard expert and wildlife conservationist Charudutt Mishra has won the prestigious Whitley Gold Award.
  • He has been awarded for his contribution to involving indigenous communities in the conservation and recovery of big cat species in Asia’s high mountain ecosystems.
  • This is his second Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) Award.

 

4) Centre signs MoU with Sony, BEL, ISRO, Atomic Energy

  • Multiple MoUs were signed between the centre and leading organizations during SemiconIndia Conference 2022 on 30 April 2022.
  • An MoU was signed between ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU), Thiruvananthapuram, and DIR-V SHAKTI Processor (IIT Madras).
  • An MoU between Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and DIR-V VEGA Processor (C-DAC) was also signed.

 

5) DD National Pet Show wins ENBA Award 2021

  • TV series based on pet care ‘Best Friend Forever’ on Doordarshan has been awarded at the 14th edition of the Exchange4media News Broadcasting Awards (ENBA).
  • Best Friend Forever is a half-an-hour weekly live phone-in show on DD National, wherein two pet experts guide people on how to take care of their pets.
  • ENBA Awards celebrate remarkable work done by leaders in the media industry.

 

6) Karnataka inks pact with chip consortium ISMC

  • Israel-based ISMC Analog Fab Private Ltd will invest 22,900 crores in Karnataka to set up a chip-making plant.
  • An MoU has been signed in this regard.
  • India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant is expected to generate more than 1,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs.
  • ISMC is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi-based Next Orbit Ventures and Israel’s Tower Semiconductor.

 

7) Dream Sports Foundation partners with Mary Kom to launch a program

  • Dream Sports Foundation (DSF), an arm of Dream Sports, has announced the launch of the “DreamJab” programme.
  • It will be launched in collaboration with the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation (MKRBF).
  • The programme aims to nurture and support India’s future boxing world champions.
  • 30 young and talented athletes will be provided with extensive training in the sport of boxing.

 

8) World Tuna Day: 2 May

  • On May 2 every year, World Tuna Day is celebrated to spread awareness among people about Tuna fish regarding sustainable fishing practices.
  • The day was established by the UN in 2016 by the UN General Assembly to preserve the Tuna fish.
  • Tuna is a significant source of food for humans as the fish has several rich qualities such as Omega 3, Vitamin B12, proteins, and other minerals.

 

9) India-UAE trade pact comes into force

  • India and the UAE’s free trade agreement has come into effect on 1 May’22.
  • Under the pact, domestic exporters in various sectors such as textiles, agriculture, dry fruits, gems, and jewellery will get duty-free access to the UAE market.
  • The pact is officially termed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
  • The consignments to Dubai will not attract any customs duty under this.

 

10) Vinay Mohan Kwatra takes charge as new Foreign Secretary

  • Vinay Mohan Kwatra has taken charge as India’s new Foreign Secretary.
  • A 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Kwatra succeeded Harsh Vardhan Shringla who retired from service on 30 Apr’22.
  • Kwatra was serving as India’s envoy to Nepal before assuming the charge of the foreign secretary.
  • Before this, he served as the Ambassador of India to France from August 2017 to February 2020.
