1) ICICI Pru Mutual Fund launches Booster Systematic Investment Plan

  • ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund has launched a new feature — ICICI Prudential Booster Systematic Investment Plan (Booster SIP).
  • In this, a fixed amount is invested at pre-defined intervals in the source scheme and a variable amount is transferred to the target scheme at pre-defined intervals depending on equity valuation index (EVI).

 

2) India win first ever medal at the IBSA Judo Grand Prix

  • India won its first ever medal at the IBSA Judo Grand Prix, held in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.
  • The Indian Blind and Para Judo Association’s Judoka Kapil Parmar won the bronze medal in the event.
  • BSA Judo Grand Prix are being staged under a new classification system, with athletes split into J1 and J2 categories. J1 competitors are partially sighted, while J2 athletes are blind.

 

3) Eminent playback singer KK passes away

  • Popular playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, better known as KK, passed away in May 2022.
  • KK was introduced by A. R. Rahman in a Tamil Film Kadhal Desam.
  • He got his Bollywood break “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
  • A versatile singer, KK has also recorded songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali, among other languages.

 

4) India’s Fiscal Deficit at 6.71% of GDP in FY22

  • India’s fiscal deficit for the financial year 2021-22 stood at Rs 15,86,537 crore, or 6.71 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
  • The finance ministry had estimated the deficit at Rs 15,91,089 crore or 6.9 per cent of GDP in February 2022.
  • The difference between total revenue and total expenditure of the government is termed a fiscal deficit.

 

5) Israel signs UAE free trade deal, its first in Arab world

  • Israel signed a free trade deal with the United Arab Emirates on 31 May 2022, its first with an Arab country.
  • The trade agreement defines tax rates, imports and intellectual property, which would encourage more Israeli companies to set up offices in the UAE, particularly in Dubai.
  • The accord would remove tariffs on 96% of goods, including food, agriculture, cosmetics, medical equipment, etc.

 

6) Rajesh Gera appointed Director General, National Informatics Centre

  • Senior scientist Rajesh Gera was appointed as the Director General, National Informatics Centre (NIC) on 31 May, 2022.
  • Gera is currently Deputy Director General in the NIC.
  • The NIC, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity), was established in 1976 with the objective to provide technology-driven solutions to central and state governments.

 

7) Turkey rejects Indian wheat consignment

  • Turkish authorities denied permission to an Indian wheat consignment over phytosanitary concerns, prompting a ship to initiate its return journey on May 29, 2022.
  • Global supply of wheat has been severely affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since the two countries account for one-fourth of global wheat trade.

8) Asia Cup Hockey 2022: India win bronze after beating Japan 1-0

  • The Indian men’s hockey team won bronze in Hockey Asia Cup 2022 after defeating Japan 1-0 in the third-Place match.
  • India captain Birendra Lakra won the player of the match award for his sturdy defensive work.
  • The 2022 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup was the eleventh edition of the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup.
  • South Korea won their fifth title after a finals win over Malaysia.

 

9) Union Cabinet allows procurement by Cooperatives through GeM portal

  • The Union Cabinet on 1 June 2022 approved a proposal to expand the mandate of Government e-Marketplace (GEM) by allowing procurement by cooperatives.
  • The move will help over 8.54 lakh registered cooperatives and their 27 crore members.
  • The GeM was launched on August 9, 2016, by the Commerce Ministry to create an open and transparent procurement platform for government buyers.

 

10) President confers one Kirti Chakra and 14 Shaurya Chakras

  • President Ram Nath Kovind, on 31 May 2022, conferred one Kirti Chakra and 14 Shaurya Chakras during Defence Investiture Ceremony (Phase-2) at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
  • Kirti Chakra was awarded to the constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police Altaf Hussain Bhat posthumously.
  • He also conferred 13 Param Vishisht Seva Medals and 29 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals for distinguished service.

11) Punjab abolishes physical stamp papers, launches ‘e-stamp’ facility

  • The Punjab government on 2 June 2022 decided to abolish the physical stamp papers in an attempt to bring efficiency and check the pilferage of State revenue.
  • Earlier the e-stamping facility was applicable only to a value of above 20,000, but the government is extending this facility to stamp papers for all denominations starting from 1.

12) Global Day of Parents: 1 June

  • June 1 is celebrated as the United Nations Global Parents Day.
  • On September 17, 2012, UN General Assembly passed the resolution 66/292 to observe June 1 as the Global Parents Day.
  • The day is proclaimed in honour of the role of parents in a life of a child.
  • The theme for Global Parents Day 2022 is Appreciate All Parents Throughout the World.

 

13) Ministry of Earth Sciences signs agreement with ABS Marine Services

  • The Ministry of Earth Sciences has signed an agreement with ABS Marine Services Pvt Ltd, Chennai.
  • It has been signed for running, manning, maintenance, catering, and housekeeping of all the six research ships.
  • The six research ships are Sagar Nidhi, Sagar Manjusha, Sagar Anveshika, Sagar Tara, Sagar Kanya, and Sagar Sampada.

 

14) Chef Vikas Khanna first Indian to make Gazette Review’s global top 10

  • Michelin star celebrity chef Vikas Khanna has been ranked among the top 10 global chefs in the world by Gazette Review, becoming the only Indian chef who has made it to the prestigious list.
  • Gazette Review ranked Mr. Khanna sixth, with British chef Gordon Ramsay leading the list.
  • Khanna is also known for creating the most expensive cookbook in the world.

 

15) World Milk Day: 1 June

  • The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations adopted June 1 as World Milk Day in 2001.
  • The day is marked to recognise milk as global food and to celebrate the dairy industry.
  • In the last few years, India has also become one of the largest producers of milk in the world with over 150 million tones of production and per capita availability of over 300 grams per day.

 

16) National flag can now be machine-made, in polyester

  • The Indian national flag or Tricolour can now be made of polyester and with the help of machines, according to the revised Flag Code of India.
  • The Union government in December 2021 amended the flag code stating the national flag made of polyester or machine-made flags have been allowed.
  • Before this, only hand-woven and hand-spun flags made of cotton, silk, wool or Khadi were allowed.

 

17) FIH World Rankings: Indian men team slips to 4th spot

  • The Indian men’s hockey team slipped to 4th spot but the women’s side rose to number six in the latest FIH World Rankings, issued on 31 May 2022.
  • At the top, Australia (2842.258) and the Netherlands (3049.495) continued to be the world’s number one ranked teams in the men’s and women’s ranking.
  • In the men’s category, the Netherlands (2465.707) replaced India (2366.990) in third place.

 

18) National Education Ministers’ Conference begins in Gujarat

  • The two-day National Education Ministers’ Conference is being held in Gujarat from 1 June 2022.
  • Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan along with other union Ministers and Education Ministers of States and Union Territories will be participating in the conference.
  • It will focus on the implementation of National Education Policy 2020.

 

19) Indian para-athlete Vinod Kumar banned for 2 years

  • Indian para-athlete Vinod Kumar has been banned for two years for intentionally misrepresenting his abilities in classification at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
  • He will be ineligible to compete in para-athletics competition until August 2023.
  • Kumar had finished third in a discus event at Tokyo but the result was challenged by fellow competitors and his throw was declared void.

 

20) North India’s first Industrial Biotech Park inaugurated in J&K

  • Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and Union minister Jitendra Singh on 28 May, 2022, inaugurated the north India’s first Industrial Biotech Park constructed at Ghatti near Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Biotech Park would act as the hub for the incubation of new ideas and will act as a robust platform to support the agri-entrepreneurs, startups, and progressive farmers.
