1) West Bengal to get seven new districts, total number to rise to 30

  • Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government has decided to carve out seven new districts in the state to simplify administrative operations.
  • Earlier there were 23 districts in Bengal which has now gone up to 30.
  • Six new district names are: Sunderban, Ichhemati, Ranaghat, Bishnupur, Jangipur, Behrampur.
  • One more district will be named in Basirhat region.

 

2) World Breastfeeding Week 2022: 1-7 August

  • World Breastfeeding Week 2022 is being observed from 1-7 August.
  • In order to support and encourage breastfeeding, WHO and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) created a memorandum in 1990.
  • Following this, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was established in 1991.
  • The inaugural World Breastfeeding Week was observed in 1992.

 

3) Indian and French Navies conduct exercise in the Atlantic

  • INS Tarkash conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with French Naval Ships in the North Atlantic Ocean on 29-30 July 2022.
  • Replenishment at sea was exercised between Tarkash and the French Fleet Tanker FNS Somme.
  • This was followed by joint air operations with the maritime surveillance aircraft Falcon 50 participating in multiple simulated missile engagements and air defence drills.

 

4) Achinta Sheuli wins third gold medal for India

  • Achinta Sheuli won a gold medal – the country’s third – in the men’s 73kg final in the Commonwealth Games 2022.
  • He lifted a highest of 143kg in snatch – which is a Games record – and 170kg in Clean & Jerk series, combining for an impressive and record-breaking 313 kg.
  • This was India’s sixth medal at the CWG 2022.

 

5) Vietnam-India bilateral army exercise “EX VINBAX 2022” begins

  • The 3rd Vietnam-India Bilateral Army Exercise “EX VINBAX 2022” began on 1 Aug’22 at Chandimandir.
  • It will continue till 20 Aug’22.
  • The exercise is a sequel to previously conducted bilateral exercise in Vietnam in 2019.
  • The theme of Ex VINBAX – 2022 is employment and deployment of an Engineer Company and a Medical Team as part of United Nations Contingent for Peace Keeping Operations.

 

6) Air India to let pilots fly till they are 65

  • Air India has decided to allow its pilots to fly till they are 65.
  • DGCA allows pilots to fly till the age of 65 years, compared to the Air India retirement age of 58 years.
  • Allowing pilots to fly till the age of 65 is a practice followed by most airlines in the industry.
  • Post-retirement the Air India pilots will be hired on a contractual basis for 5 years extendable to 65 years.

 

7) World Wide Web Day: 1 August

  • World Wide Web Day is observed on the 1st of August every year.
  • It is an annual event that celebrates the history, development, and worldwide impact of the World Wide Web (WWW).
  • The WWW was created by English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 in Switzerland.
  • He developed the essentials of the web like HTTP, HTML, the WorldWideWeb browser, a server, and the first website.

 

8) Point 5140 at Drass in Kargil Sector named as ‘Gun Hill’

  • To commemorate the victory of Indian armed forces and pay tribute to the supreme sacrifice of the Gunners in “Operation Vijay”, Point 5140 at Drass in Kargil has been christened as ‘Gun Hill’
  • The capture of Point 5140 by the Indian armed forces, was the key factor in the early completion of the 1999 Kargil war.
  • On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army declared victory in ‘Operation Vijay.

 

9) 5G auction nets 1.5 lakh cr, Jio tops table with Rs 88,078 crore bids

  • India’s first ever 5G spectrum auctions has ended with the government netting a record over *1,50,173 crore.
  • Reliance Jio was the top bidder, bidding a cumulative 88,078 crore for 24,740 MHz of airwaves.
  • The mop-up from the 5G spectrum, is almost double the 77,815 crore worth 4G airwaves sold last year and triple of 50,968.37 crore garnered from a 3G auction in 2010.

 

10) England beat Germany to win UEFA Women’s Euro 2022

  • England on 31 July 2022 won the 2022 UEFA European Women’s Football Championship at Wembley Stadium in London.
  • England defeated the eight-time champions Germany by 2-1 in the final.
  • It is the first time since 1966 that England won an international trophy.
  • The Euro 2022 was the 13th edition of the UEFA Women’s Championship which took place from 6 July to 31 July 2022 in England.

 

11) Satyendra Prakash assumes charge as Principal DG of PIB

  • Satyendra Prakash on 1 August 2022 assumed charge as Principal Director General of the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
  • He is an Indian Information Service officer of the 1988 batch.
  • He succeeded Jaideep Bhatnagar who superannuated on 31 July 2022.
  • Prior to this, Mr Prakash held the position of Principal DG, Central Bureau of Communication.
