1) President Droupadi Murmu to attend Karbi Youth Festival-2024 in Assam
- President will be the Chief Guest at the celebration of Karbi Youth Festival on January 17, 2024.
- The festival will be held at Taralangso, Diphu.
- Other dignitaries attending include Assam Governor Gulab Chand, Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan, and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
- The celebration, from January 12-19, will feature traditional art, folk dance, music, and indigenous tribal foods.
2) Power Minister inaugurated power grid’s Vishram Sadan in Bengaluru.
- Power Minister RK Singh inaugurates Power Grid’s Vishram Sadan in Bengaluru, built for Rs 23 crore.
- The 2-storey Vishram Sadan, equipped with 270 beds and 55 rooms, aims to provide comfort to patients’ attendants.
- Power Grid’s CSR initiatives, including similar Vishram Sadans across India, contribute to rural development, education, healthcare, and more, costing about Rs 1000 crores.
3) DGFT plans pacts with Global e-commerce platforms.
- DGFT, under the commerce ministry, to sign agreements with global e-comm platforms like Walmart for ‘Districts as Export Hubs’ Initiative”
- Aim: Provide training to MSMEs in identified districts, covering digital cataloging, imaging, and tax advisory for export promotion.
- Director General of Foreign Trade, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, states that MoUs with global platforms will be finalized soon.
4) ULFA pro-talks faction: Centre and Assam set to sign peace accord
- A 30-member delegation from ULFA’s pro-talks faction reaches New Delhi for the anticipated peace accord signing on December 29.
- The delegation includes 16 members from ULFA and 14 from civil society; discussions since 2011 aim to address longstanding concerns.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma are expected to be present at the signing ceremony.
5) SHRESHTA: empowering SC students through residential education scheme
- Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment’s scheme supports 2,564 SC students in 142 private schools for the academic year 2023-24.
- Dual implementation modes include selection via Entrance Test and support for NGO/VO-operated schools/hostels.
- Comprehensive monitoring, real-time MIS, field visits, and financial data highlight the scheme’s commitment to ensuring educational access and quality.
6) NASA Launched mission ‘God of Chaos’ asteroid threatening Earth
- NASA relaunches OSIRIS-APEX mission to study ‘God of Chaos’ asteroid Apophis approaching Earth’s orbit.
- The spacecraft, returning from deep space, aims to understand the potential effects of Apophis’s close flyby in 2029.
- Apophis, known for its 370-yard size, will be just 20,000 miles from Earth, closer than some man-made satellites, on April 13, 2029.
7) IPS Anand Mishra resigned, aims for freedom and social service
- IPS officer Anand Mishra, part of the SIT on Manipur ethnic clash, resigns to pursue a life of “freedom and independence.”
- Mishra, dubbed “Assam’s Singham” on social media, submitted his resignation letter to the chief secretary on December 18.
- The 2011 batch IPS officer expressed his desire to work for the betterment of people in his native village in Bihar.
8) PM Vishwakarma yojna awareness program empowered artisans in Sonipat
- Organized by MSME-Development Office, Karnal.
- Chief guest: Shri Mohanlal Badoli, MLA, Rai Assembly Constituency.
- Scheme pillars: Sammaan, Samarthya, and Samriddhi.
- Ishita Ganguli Tripathy, Additional Development Commissioner, highlighted the scheme’s benefits.
- 10 stalls by CSC Centre, and 300 artisans participated.
- Women’s participation rate in the scheme is 55%.
9) Power Minister laid foundation stone for ICER building at Bengaluru
- Union Minister Shri R. K. Singh lays the foundation for ICER building at IISc Bengaluru.
- Project value: Rs. 60.74 Crores.
- ICER focuses on renewable energy, green hydrogen, clean coal, and sustainable technologies.
- Aims to align with the Hon’ble PM’s vision of a technologically empowered India.
- Dignitaries present include Shri K.J. George, Shri P.C. Mohan, and Shri Tejasvi Surya.
10) Rajnath Singh to grace Tezpur University’s 21st convocation in Assam
- Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister, is to attend Tezpur University’s 21st Convocation on December 31.
- Singh will confer over 783 Postgraduate degrees, 428 Undergraduate degrees, 5 PG diplomas, and 100+ PhD degrees.
- The event also includes conferring degrees and diplomas to 23 learners in Distance and Online Education.
11) Qatar commutes death penalty: relief for 8 Indian Navy veterans
- Court of Appeal in Qatar reduces sentences in Dahra Global ‘espionage’ case involving 8 Indian Navy veterans.
- India notes the verdict, awaits detailed judgment, and is in close touch with the legal team and family for the next steps.
- 8 retired officers, initially sentenced to death in October, were arrested on charges of espionage on behalf of Israel, working for Dahra Global Technologies.
12) IIT Guwahati collaborated with Assam govt’s Arohan Scheme over STEM
- IIT Guwahati collaborates with Assam Govt’s Arohan Scheme to promote STEM subjects in higher education.
- Over 3300 students, including a majority of girls, were inspired through mentoring, exposure trips, and competitions.
- Arohan, led by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, focuses on the career progression of government school students in classes 9th to 12th, with 12 batches hosted at IIT Guwahati.
