1) Nagaland gets its 2nd railway station in 119 years

  • North-east state, Nagaland got its second railway station after a gap of more than 119 years with the commissioning of a new facility at Shokhuvi.
  • Dimapur Railway Station was inaugurated in 1903.
  • The Donyi Polo Express ran daily between Guwahati in Assam and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh. The train service has now been extended till Shokhuvi.

2) Judo World Championships

  • Indian judoka Linthoi Chanambam scripted history by winning India’s first-ever medal in Judo World Championships with a gold in the Women’s 57kg category.
  • The 15-year-old judoka outclassed Brazil’s Bianca Reis in the 57-kg category final.
  • Linthoi Chanambam became the first Indian judoka to win a medal at any age-group category of the World Championships.

 

3) Narendra Modi inaugurates Gujarat’s ‘Smriti Van’ memorial

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the “Smriti Van” memorial, which celebrates the resilience shown by people during the devastating 2001 earthquake in the Kutch region of Gujarat.
  • The grand structure, which is the first such memorial in the country is spread over 470 acres on Bhujio Hill near Bhuj town.

4) Digital health IDs

  • Edelweiss General Insurance has partnered with the Union Health Ministry to help create digital health IDs for all in the country.
  • Users will be able to generate their unique ABHA number through Edelweiss’s website.
  • ABHA’ or the Ayushman Bharat Health Account is a 14-digit number that helps users to share and access their health records digitally with registered healthcare providers.

 

5) Know About: Atal Innovation Mission

  • The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is a flagship initiative set up by the NITI Aayog in 2016 to promote innovation and entrepreneurship across the country.
  • Objectives: to create & promote an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship across the country at schools & universities.
  • AIM has multiple programs such as Atal Tinkering Labs & Atal Incubators, to encourage innovation in the country.

 

6) James Anderson becomes most successful pacer in international cricket

  • England’s James Anderson became the first-ever fast bowler to complete 950 wickets in international cricket on 27 August 2022.
  • He attained this historic feat on Day 3 of the second Test against South Africa.
  • He broke the record of Australia’s Glenn McGrath (949 wickets).
  • Overall, Anderson ranks behind Muthiah Muralidaran (1,347), Shane Warne (1,001), and Anil Kumble (956).

 

7) Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan appointed as SEBI whole-time Member

  • The Union Govt has appointed Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan, a professor at SP Jain Institute, as a whole-time member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SBI).
  • With this appointment, Gopalakrishnan becomes the fourth whole-time member of SEBI.
  • The other three whole-time members are S K Mohanty, Ananta Barua & Ashwani Bhatia.

8) NITI Aayog to establish 500 Atal Tinkering Labs in Jammu and Kashmir

  • Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) & NITI Aayog will establish more than 500 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLS) in Jammu and Kashmir to nurture an innovative mindset among high school students.
  • The objectives of the AIM are to create & promote an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship across the country.
  • The programmes of AIM cover 34 states & Union Territories.

9) Max Verstappen wins 2022 Belgian F1 Grand Prix

  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Belgian. Formula 1 Grand Prix on 28 August 2022.
  • Red Bull’s Sergio Perez & Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished at second and third positions respectively.
  • Verstappen has now won nine of this season’s 14 races.
  • It was his 71st podium finish & he collected 26 points from this race.
  • Verstappen won the Belgian GP in 2021 as well.

 

10) Germany becomes the first nation to launch hydrogen trains

  • Germany inaugurated the world’s first hydrogen-powered train, Coradia iLint, on 24 August 2022.
  • A total of 14 hydrogen power trains will operate on a regional route in Germany.
  • Manufactured by Alstom, these trains will only emit steam and condensed water while operating with a low level of noise.
  • These trains can travel at a maximum speed of 140 kmph.

11) National Sports Day: 29 August

  • India celebrates National Sports Day on 29th August to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand.
  • The day was designated as India’s National Sports Day in 2012.
  • The President of India gives away sports-related awards such as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award & Dronacharya Award on this day.

 

12) Neeraj Chopra wins Lausanne Diamond League Meet title in Javelin throw

  • Neeraj Chopra has won the javelin throw competition at the Lausanne Diamond League with a best throw of 89.08 metre.
  • With this, Neeraj became the first Indian to clinch the prestigious Diamond League Meet title.
  • Neeraj has thus qualified for the Diamond League Finals, which will take place in Zurich, Switzerland in September.
  • He has also qualified for the 2023 World Championships.
