1) Cabinet approves Competition Amendment Bill

  • The Union cabinet has cleared a Bill to amend the two-decade-old Competition Act.
  • It aims to reform the competition regulation ecosystem.
  • The Competition (Amendment) Bill seeks to introduce changes to the governing structure of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and modify the substantive provisions in law to address the needs of new age markets.

 

2) IIT-M launches ‘Nilekani Centre’ to promote Indian language technology

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on 28 July 2022 launched the ‘Nilekani Centre at A14Bharat’ to promote the Indian language. technology.
  • It was inaugurated by Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys.
  • Nilekani will support the centre with a grant of Rs 36 crores.
  • The A14Bharat was set up as an initiative of IIT Madras to build open-source language Al for Indian languages.

 

3) ‘Games Wide Open’ unveiled as 2024 Paris Olympics official slogan

  • Organisers of the 2024 Paris Olympics unveiled “Games Wide Open” as their official slogan on 25 July 2022.
  • Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris will be hosting the Summer Olympics third time in 2024.
  • The 2024 Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11 2024.
  • Athletes will compete in a total of 329 events in 32 sports.

 

4) International Tiger Day: 29 July

  • International Tiger Day is celebrated annually on 29 July to make people aware of the dangers & problems faced by tigers around the globe.
  • The decision to recognise this day was taken in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia.
  • As per the World Wildlife Fund, there are only 3900 wild tigers present around the globe.
  • In 1973, Project Tiger was launched in India to save tigers.

 

5) Jeffrey Armstrong receives ‘Distinguished Indologist for 2021’ award

  • Canadian scholar Jeffrey Armstrong has received the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Distinguished Indologist award for 2021.
  • He was presented the award on 26 July 2022 in Vancouver, Canada.
  • This award has been conferred upon Armstrong “in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the study of India’s history & culture.
  • This award was instituted in 2015.

 

6) ‘Dinesh Shahra Lifetime Award’ instituted for the first time

  • Dinesh Shahra Foundation (DSF) has instituted a first-of-its-kind ‘Dinesh Shahra Lifetime Award’ for Excellence in Music.
  • The initiative is supported by the Indian Arts & Cultural Society.
  • Apart from a trophy or memento, the recognition will also include a significant cash component.
  • Dinesh Shahra’s book – Sanatan Leela, was also launched during the event.

 

7) Rajasthan inks pact with Telangana to set up women’s bank

  • Rajasthan Grameen Aajivika Vikas Parishad (RGAV) on 25 July 2022 signed an MoU with the Telangana government’s Stree Nidhi Credit Cooperative Federation.
  • This agreement was signed to set up ‘Rajasthan Mahila Nidhi’, a financial institution for women, in Rajasthan.
  • This institution will be operated entirely by women & will act as a complementary body to the formal banking system.

 

8) World Nature Conservation Day: 28 July

  • World Nature Conservation Day is observed on 28 July every year.
  • The day is observed to create awareness on the importance of protecting natural resources.
  • The theme for World Nature Conservation Day 2022 is ‘Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature!
  • The Earth is currently facing several challenges such as climate change, loss of habitat for wildlife, deforestation, etc.

 

9) First indigenous aircraft carrier ‘Vikrant’ handed over to Indian Navy

  • The Cochin Shipyard Ltd on 28 July 2022 handed over the country’s first indigenous aircraft carrier – Vikrant, to the Indian Navy.
  • The 262-meter-long aircraft carrier is the largest ever warship to be built in the country.
  • It has been built at an overall cost of 20,000 crore rupees.
  • It is scheduled to be inducted into the services of the Indian Navy by August 2022.

 

10) ISRO earns $279 million in foreign exchange through satellite launches

  • ISRO has earned 279 million dollars in foreign exchange by launching satellites for global clients.
  • ISRO in association with its commercial arms has successfully launched 345 foreign satellites from 34 countries on-board Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
  • Recently on June 30, PSLV-C53 mission by ISRO, successfully launched 3 Singapore customer satellites: DS-EO, NeuSAR and SCOOB-1.
