1) PM Modi to dedicate 1.25 lakh PM Kisan Samridhi Kendra to nation
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate one lakh 25 thousand Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samidhi Kendra-PMKSKS to the nation at Sikar in Rajasthan.
- These centers will act as a one-stop shop for all agriculture-related inputs and services.
- The Prime Minister will also launch ‘Urea Gold’.
- This is a new variety of sulfur-coated urea, which will help to remove sulfur deficiency in the soil.
2) Dentsu X India appoints Jose Leon as chief executive officer
- Dentsu X, an agency of Dentsu Aegis Network India Private Limited, has appointed Jose Leon as its CEO.
- Leon has about 26 years of work experience and has helped brands build revenues across industries.
- Prior to joining Dentsu X, he was the managing director at Publicis Groupe for over five years.
- Divya Karani previously served as the CEO for Dentsu X for about a decade till 2021.
3) Irshad Ahmad appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Syria
- Counsellor Irshad Ahmad has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Syria.
- Ahmad will shortly take up the assignment, according to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) release.
- MoS for External Affairs V Muraleedharan discussed India-Syria bilateral cooperation with Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous.
- Muraleedharan paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi in Damascus.
4) Veteran journalist Prem Prakash receives Lifetime Achievement Award
- Veteran journalist and ANI founder Prem Prakash was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Delhi for his contributions to journalism.
- The ceremony was attended by Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat.
- The Global Education Mentor Awards program was organized at Ambedkar International Center in Delhi.
- The award aims to foster collaboration and partnership among education stakeholders.
5) Prabhat Kumar appointed India’s next High Commissioner to South Africa
- IFS officer Prabhat Kumar appointed as the next High Commissioner to South Africa.
- India and South Africa will formally mark their decades-old ties this November 2023.
- It was announced by the Union Minister S. Jaishankar’s during an event in which he addressed on three subjects: “Thirty years of India – South Africa ties”, “15 years of BRICS” and “9 years of Modi Sarkar”.
6) Lok Sabha passes Forest Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2023
- The Forest (Conservation) Amendment Bill-2023 was passed by Lok Sabha on 26 July 2023.
- The bill exempts land within 100 km of the country’s borders from conservation laws.
- The bill permits the setting up of zoos, safaris, and eco-tourism facilities in forest areas.
- The bill seeks to promote agro-forestry and exempts certain types of land from the provisions of the Act.
7) Veteran Punjabi singer Surinder Shinda passes away
- Surinder Shinda, a renowned Punjabi singer, passed away in Ludhiana, Punjab.
- Shinda penned several renowned songs including ‘Jatt Jeona Morh’ and ‘Putt Jattan De.’
- He was widely regarded as one of the best Punjabi singers and a folk legend.
- In 2013, he was honoured by Brit Asia Music with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution as a legendary bhangra artist.
8) Odisha Naveen Patnaik becomes 2nd longest serving CM in India
- Naveen Patnaik became the second longest-serving chief minister in India, replacing Jyoti Basu.
- Pawan Kumar Chamling still holds the record of being the longest-serving Chief Minister in India.
- Patnaik took charge as the Chief Minister of Odisha on March 5, 2000, and holds the post for 23 years and 138 days.
- Mr Basu was the chief minister of West Bengal from June 21, 1977, to Nov 5, 2000.
9) Mumbai’s Byculla railway station gets UNESCO’s Cultural Heritage award
- Mumbai’s Byculla railway station gets UNESCO’s Asia Pacific Cultural Heritage award.
- The 169-year-old Byculla railway station in Mumbai is one of the oldest railway stations in the world.
- The award was presented to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on 25 July 2023.
- The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya also won the award of excellence in the UNESCO Asia Pacific awards 2022.
10) Kerala’s KSUM inks pact with IFSCA to support fintech startups
- The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) has joined hands with International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to empower fintech and techfin startups.
- The MoU permits seeking inputs from each other on developmental matters relating to the fintech industry.
- As per the MoU, KSUM-registered fintechs can find listed on international exchanges within IFSC to raise capital.
11) HDFC Bank launches co-branded credit card with Swiggy
- HDFC Bank and Swiggy have launched a co-branded credit card.
- The Swiggy HDFC Bank credit card is the first ever from Swiggy.
- The card will be hosted on Mastercard’s payment network.
- The card offers 10% cashback on Swiggy spends and 5% cashback on shopping across various platforms.
- As a welcome benefit, cardholders will enjoy a complimentary 3-month Swiggy One membership.
12) Union Bank partners with IBM to co-create Digital Business platform
- Union Bank of India has partnered with IBM India Private Limited to create a Digital Business Platform.
- The platform aims to establish a Digital Bank with cutting-edge capabilities.
- Union Bank of India will embrace Open Banking capabilities, allowing seamless integration of services across partnerships.
- The bank aims to create a future-ready banking ecosystem.
13) Cambodia PM Hun Sen steps down and hands over power to son
- Hun Sen, Cambodia’s authoritarian leader, has announced his resignation and the succession of his eldest son, Hun Manet.
- Hun Sen has been in power since 1985 and has been criticized for his lack of tolerance for dissent and human rights abuses.
- Hun Manet, Hun Sen’s successor, is a graduate of West Point military academy in the US and has a PhD from the University of Bristol in economics.
