1) First Khelo India Women’s Judo Tournament to start from 27th August

  • The first Khelo India Women’s Judo Tournament will start from 27 August 2022.
  • The tournament will be held across four zones in the country.
  • The national round will be held from 20th to 23rd October 2022 at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The competitors from four age groups will compete during the tournament.
  • The tournament includes prize money of 48 lakh rupees.

 

2) 8th India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting held on 24 August

  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar co-chaired the 8th India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting with his Brazilian counterpart Carlos França in Brasilia on 24 August 2022.
  • The comprehensive discussions covered trade and investments, petroleum, biofuels, edible oils and minerals, health, pharma, etc.
  • After the meeting, agreements were signed in the fields of broadcasting and taxation.

4) U.P. govt to develop Kannauj as perfume tourism destination

  • The Uttar Pradesh govt has decided to develop Kannauj as a perfume tourism destination.
  • As part of this initiative, the govt will organize an international perfume fair in Kannauj in December 2022.
  • The first phase of the perfume park being set up in the district will also be completed by 15 November 2022.
  • The perfume of Kannauj comes under the govt’s ‘One District, One Product’ initiative.

  • Airports Authority of India or AAI was founded on 1 April 1995.
  • It is a statutory body, under the ownership of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
  • It is responsible for creating, upgrading, maintaining, and managing civil aviation infrastructure in India.
  • It is headquartered in New Delhi.
  • It is currently managing 137 airports.
  • Sanjeev Kumar is the current Chairman of AAI.

 

6) Angela Merkel awarded the 2022 ‘UNESCO Peace Prize’

  • Former German chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded the 2022 UNESCO Peace Prize for “her efforts to welcome refugees”.
  • In 2015, Merkel welcomed more than 1.2 million refugees into Germany.
  • This prize, also known as the Félix Houphout-Boigny-UNESCO Peace Prize, has been awarded each year since 1989 to individuals, and organisations that have made a special effort to promote peace.

 

7) Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu launches a book ‘New India’

  • Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu released a book titled A ‘New India: Selected Writings 2014-19’ on 24 August 2022.
  • It is a compilation of selected articles of former Union Minister and Padma Vibhushan Arun Jaitley.
  • 24 August 2022 marked his death anniversary.
  • Jaitley served as the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India from 2014 to 2019.

 

8) Know About: Vyas Samman

  • The Vyas Samman is a Hindi literary award in India.
  • It is given for an outstanding literary work in Hindi language.
  • It is given annually by the K K Birla Foundation.
  • To be eligible for the award, the literary work must have been published during the last 10 years.
  • First awarded: 1991
  • First recipient: Ram Vilas Sharma for ‘Bharat ke Pracheen bhasha parivar aur Hindi’

 

9) Independence Day of Ukraine: 24 August

  • Independence Day of Ukraine is celebrated. on 24 August in commemoration of the Declaration of Independence of 1991.
  • Ukraine is the second largest European country after Russia.
  • The Soviet Union dissolved in the 1990s and on July 16, 1990, the Ukrainian government declared state sovereignty.
  • US President Joe Biden has announced $2.98 billion in military aid to Kyiv, on the occasion.

 

10) Samir V. Kamat appointed as DRDO chief

  • Distinguished Scientist Dr Samir V Kamat has been appointed as the new chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • Kamat will succeed Dr G. Satheesh Reddy who has been appointed as Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister.
  • Earlier, Dr Kamat was Director General of Naval Systems & Materials at DRDO since July 2017.

11) Dr. Asghar Wajahat conferred with the 31st ‘Vyas Samman’

  • Dr Asghar Wajahat, a well-known Hindi writer, was conferred with the 31st Vyas Samman on 25 August 2022.
  • He has been chosen for the prestigious award for his play ‘Mahabali’, which focuses on Mughal emperor Akbar & poet Tulsidas.
  • The Vyas Samman is a Hindi literary award in India, first awarded in 1991.
  • It is awarded annually by the K.K. Birla Foundation & carries an award of 4 lakh rupees.

 

12) Govt appoints K Subramanian as Executive Director for India at IMF

  • Former Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) Krishnamurthy Subramanian has been appointed as India’s Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • His term will begin from November 2022 & will continue for a period of 3 years.
  • He will succeed Surjit Bhalla, the current Executive Director for India at IMF.
  • Subramanian was the youngest CEA in the finance ministry between 2018 and 2021.
