1) Kerala unveils additional books to include portions deleted by NCERT

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan released additional textbooks of SCERT that include topics recently deleted from NCERT textbooks.
  • The government views the exclusion of chapters seriously as they believe those chapters excluded are important.
  • In class 11 and 12, 12 subjects with 44 textbooks are from NCERT.

Students of 11 and 12 are getting textbooks prepared by NCERT.

 

2) Indore secures 1st position, Bhopal 5th in Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2023

  • Indore has secured the first position in Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan-2023 conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board.
  • Bhopal ranked fifth, Jabalpur 13th and Gwalior 41st in the same category of cities with a population of over 10 lakhs.
  • Madhya Pradesh has secured two of the first five positions for cities with a population of more than 10 lakhs.

 

3) Eminent Statistician CR Rao Passes Away

  • Renowned mathematician and statistician Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, widely known as C R Rao, passed away at the age of 102.
  • He was recently awarded the “International Prize in Statistics-2023”, often referred to as the “statistics’ equivalent of the Nobel Prize”.
  • He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan award in 1968 and the Padma Vibhushan award in 2001.

 

4) Government forms committee to revamp DRDO

  • The Centre has formed a committee to review the functioning of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The committee is headed by a former Principal Scientific Advisor to the government.
  • The members also include a retired diplomat, an ISRO scientist and a serving officer.
  • The committee would suggest measures to revamp DRDO to make it more result-oriented.

 

5) Indian shooter Amanpreet Singh clinches gold in Men’s 25 metre event

  • Indian shooter Amanpreet Singh won the gold medal in the Men’s 25-metre pistol shooting event at the ISSF World Championship 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • Gunhyeok Lee from South Korea won silver, while Kevin Chapon from France won bronze.
  • The Indian team finished in 4th position with a combined total of 1,695 points.
  • India has won a total of nine medals at the ISSF World Championship 2023.

 

6) Andhra CM lays stone for 3 renewable energy projects worth 5314 MW

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for three renewable energy projects to produce 5,314 MW of power in Nandyala district.
  • Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) also signed a MoU with the National Hydro-Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) to promote pumped storage power projects.
  • Pump storage power projects are environment-friendly.

 

7) Indian junior women’s hockey team finishes 3rd at Four Nations Event

  • The Indian junior women’s hockey team secured a dominant 6-2 victory against England to claim the third spot in the 4 Nations Tournament – Dusseldorf 2023.
  • Neelam converted a penalty corner successfully in the second quarter to level the score, and Annu doubled India’s lead with a field goal.
  • England scored their second goal of the match through Charlotte Bingham in the 54th minute.

 

8) Yes Bank launches all-in-one ‘IRIS’ mobile app

  • YES BANK has launched its mobile banking app, IRIS, which offers over 100 features and services.
  • IRIS by YES BANK is designed to provide a simplified banking experience with state-of-the-art safety features.
  • The app is a product of collaboration between the bank and its customers.
  • Prashant Kumar is the Managing Director & CEO of YES BANK.

 

9) Justice Prakash Shrivastava appointed as NGT chairperson

  • Justice Prakash Shrivastava has taken charge as the chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
  • Justice Shrivastava was Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court from October 11, 2021, to March 30, 2023.
  • He enrolled as an advocate on February 2, 1987, and practised extensively in the Supreme Court.
  • He was appointed the High Court of Madhya Pradesh judge on January 18, 2008.

 

10) Khelo India Women’s League to be renamed as Asmita Women’s League

  • The Khelo India Women’s League has been renamed the “Asmita Women’s League” to promote gender equality in sports.
  • Asmita stands for “Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action”.
  • The new name embodies the spirit of resilience, determination, and achievement that defines women athletes.
  • The League is a significant step towards the digital transformation of Indian sports.

 

11) Anurag Thakur inaugurates 33 Khelo India Centres across Rajasthan

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports inaugurated 33 Khelo India Centres in Rajasthan.
  • A National Center of Excellence with a dedicated Sports Science Centre will be set up in Rajasthan.
  • Additional 18 Khelo India centres will be set up in Rajasthan, taking the total number to 51.
  • Coaching the Coaches programme will also be extended to the Khelo India Center.

 

12) Dharmendra Pradhan releases National Curriculum Framework in Delhi

  • The National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) has been released by the Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan.
  • The NCF-SE is designed to align education with the demands of the 21st century.
  • The framework emphasizes the 5+3+3+4 design of schooling and covers all stages of schooling from foundational to secondary stages.

 

13) LCA Tejas successfully test-fires indigenous ASTRA Missile

  • Tejas, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) successfully fired the ASTRA indigenous Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile off the coast of Goa on August 23, 2023.
  • The missile release was successfully carried out from the aircraft at an altitude of about 20,000 ft.
  • ASTRA is designed to engage and destroy highly maneuvering supersonic aerial targets.

 

14) Government e-Marketplace surpasses INR 1 lakh crore GMV in 145 days

  • The government e-Marketplace (GEM) has crossed INR 1 lakh cr in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) in just 145 days in FY 2023-24.
  • GeM is now one of the largest public procurement portals globally, both in terms of transaction value and the breadth of the buyer-seller network.
  • Since its inception, GeM has crossed INR 4.91 Lakh Cr in GMV and has facilitated over 1.67 crore orders on the platform.

 

15) North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile

  • North Korea has launched a “suspected ballistic missile” on 23 August 2023.
  • North Korea plans to conduct the third reconnaissance satellite launch in October.
  • The missile passed through the Pacific Ocean around 4 a.m. local time.
  • The first and second stages of the rocket were normal, but the launch failed due to an error in the emergency blasting system during the third-stage flight.
