1) Vedanta’s Cairn Oil & Gas appointed Nick Walker as CEO
- Cairn Oil & Gas, a unit of Vedanta Ltd, on 19 Jan’23 appointed of Nick Walker as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
- Nick Walker has previously served as the President and CEO at Lundin Energy, a large European independent E&P company.
- He has also worked with Talisman Energy, Africa Oil and has an international experience of 30 years in technical, commercial, and executive leadership roles.
2) Egyptian Prez Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to attend Republic Day celebrations
- The Egyptian President will be the Chief Guest for Republic Day and a military contingent from Egypt will take part in the celebrations on 26 Jan’23.
- A commemorative stamp marking 75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Egypt will be released during his visit.
- This will be the first time that the President of Egypt will be the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day.
3) 21 January – Statehood day of Manipur, Meghalaya & Tripura
- Year 2023 marks 51st foundation year for the three states which attained statehood under the North Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act of 1971.
- While Manipur and Tripura were princely states which were absorbed into India in October 1949, Meghalaya was part of Assam after Independence.
- The states came into being in 1972 after North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, of 1971, was enacted.
4) Know About: UNESCO
- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialised agency of United Nations aimed at promoting world peace and security through cooperation in education, arts, and culture.
- Founded in 1945 as successor to the League of Nations’ International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation.

5) Afghanistan
- It is a landlocked country located in South Asia and Central Asia.
- It is one of the world’s leading producers of opium and is part of Golden Crescent along with Iran and Pakistan.
- Geographic Sites: Hindu Kush mountain range, Amu Darya, Helmand river valley, and Dasht-e Margo desert.

6) 1st Edition of Indo-Egypt Joint Training Exercise Cyclone – I begins
- Indian and Egyptian Armies are to conduct the first-ever joint exercise Cyclone-l.
- It is being held in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan for 14 days, from 14 Jan’23.
- The exercise is first of its kind as it brings special forces of countries to a common platform.
- 30-40 special forces are participating in exercise.
- The armies will engage and get trained in combat free fall, sniping, surveillance, etc.
7) Jio is India’s strongest brand, ranked ninth globally: Report
- Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio is strongest brand in India and ranked 9th among the world’s strongest brands, according to a report published by Brand Finance.
- This makes ‘Jio’ ahead of brands like EY, Coca Cola, and Porsche, and behind the likes of Google, YouTube, and Instagram.
- The report titled ‘Global 500 – 2023’ is published annually and ranks world’s most valuable and strongest brands.
