1) Jammu and Kashmir: Delimitation Commission orders become effective

  • The Delimitation Commission’s orders took effect on May 20, 2022, with the Centre determining the date under the powers granted by the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
  • According to the final Delimitation Order, 43. Assembly Constituencies (ACs) in Jammu and Kashmir would belong to the Jammu region and 47 to the Kashmir region.

 

2) Astrosat witnesses birth of black holes for five hundredth time

  • Astrosat, India’s first dedicated astronomy mission, witnessed the birth of black holes for the five hundredth time on 20 May 2022.
  • Astrosat with a lift-off mass of 1,515 kilograms was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, on 28 September 2015.
  • It is the most sensitive space telescope in the world consisting of five instruments.

 

3) International Tea Day: 21 May

  • The International Tea Day is observed on May 21 every year.
  • The day is known to create awareness about safe working conditions of the tea workers, fair trade, and a sustainable environment to improve the production of tea.
  • The first International Tea Day was held in Delhi, India in 2005.
  • About 80 per cent of the total tea produced in India is consumed by the domestic population.

 

4) RBI approves transfer of Rs 30,307 crore as surplus to central govt

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will transfer Rs 30,307 crore as surplus to the government for 2021-22.
  • The decision was taken after deciding to maintain the contingency risk buffer at 5.50 percent of its balance sheet.
  • According to the Bimal Jalan committee’s report, the RBI, at all times, has to maintain a minimum contingency risk buffer of 5.5 per cent.

 

5) Delhi government inducts two robots to douse fire

  • Delhi government has inducted robots for extinguishing fires in the city that will be able to douse fires in narrow streets, warehouses, basements, stairs, and forests and enter places like oil and chemical tankers and factories.
  • The robots will be capable of releasing high water pressure at the rate of 2,400 litres per minute.
  • At present, the Delhi Government has inducted 2 such robots.

 

6) National Mission for Clean Ganga approves 11 projects

  • Executive Committee of the National Mission for Clean Ganga has approved 11 projects with an estimated cost of around 660 crore rupees.
  • The decision was taken in the 42nd Meeting of the Executive Committee held on 19 May 2022 under the chairmanship of Director General G. Ashok Kumar.
  • In addition to this, two projects of River Front Development in Badrinath were also given approval.

 

7) Indian men’s compound team wins successive gold medals in archery

  • The Indian men’s compound team won a gold medal in Archery World Cup 2022 Stage-Two in Gwangju, South Korea on 20 May 2022.
  • Abhishek Verma, Aman Saini, and Rajat Chauhan defeated Adrien Gontier, Jean Philippe Boulch, and Qentin Baraer.
  • The Indian Women’s compound team of Avneet Kaur, Muskan Kirar, and Priya Gurjar have also won a team bronze.

 

8) Anti-Terrorism Day: 21 May

  • Anti-Terrorism Day is observed on May 21 in India every year.
  • Anti-Terrorism Day is observed on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
  • He was assassinated on May 21, 1991, by the LTTE terrorists while campaigning for the Congress Party at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
  • Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest PM when he was sworn in at 40.

 

9) Bhupender Yadav addresses 8th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting

  • Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav participated in the 8th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting which was held virtually under the Presidency of China.
  • The theme of the meeting was ‘Foster High-Quality BRICS Partnership, Usher in a New Era for Global Development!
  • The Joint Statement for the 8th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting was also adopted.

 

10) Vijay Shekhar Sharma reappointed MD and CEO of Paytm

  • Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma has been re-appointed as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Paytm.
  • He has been reappointed to the post for a period of five years with effect from December 19, 2022.
  • Madhur Deora, the Chief Financial Officer of the company, has been appointed as an Additional Director with effect from May 20, 2022, for a period of five years.
