1) Lt General Manoj Kumar Katiyar to be Indian Army’s new DGMO

  • Lt General Manoj Kumar Katiyar has been appointed as the next Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO).
  • He will be taking over the new office on May 1, 2022.
  • He is presently the General Officer Commanding of 1 Corps, a strike formation responsible for offensive operations against both Pakistan and China.
  • He was posted as Director of General Staff Duties at Army Headquarters.

 

2) Thailand gets India-made Covid vaccines under Quad initiative

  • Thailand received 200,000 doses of India-made Covovax vaccines on 21 Apr 2022 as part of a flagship initiative of the Quad grouping to help countries combat the pandemic.
  • This is the second consignment of vaccines delivered by India under the Quad vaccine partnership.
  • The Quad vaccine partnership was announced by leaders of the four-nation grouping at their first summit in March 2021.

 

3) HAL, ASSC join hands for skill development

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Aviation Sector Skill Council (ASSC) organized a skill development conclave at HAL Management Academy on 20 Apr 22.
  • Various topics, including ‘Post-Covid rebound in Indian aviation and carving skills for future’, ‘talent resource challenges in drone technology and bridging the gap through skill India’, were featured in a panel discussion at the conclave.

 

4) G20 agrees to set up global pandemic preparedness fund

  • G20 countries have provisionally agreed to set up a global fund for pandemic preparedness, likely to be housed at the World Bank.
  • The WHO and the World Bank have estimated that the annual gap in pandemic preparedness funding was $10.5 billion and any preparedness fund needed to be financed over five years, suggesting a $50 billion ask.

 

5) RBI extends Legal Entity Identifier for larger borrowers of NBFCs, UCB

  • RBI has extended the guidelines on Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) to large borrowers of NBFCs and Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs).
  • The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-digit number used to uniquely identify parties to financial transactions globally.
  • As per the timeline, the borrowers having exposure of 25 crores are required to obtain LEI by April 30, 2023.

 

6) Boris Johnson becomes first UK PM to visit Sabarmati Ashram

  • On 21 April 2022, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson became the first UK PM to visit the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat.
  • It is the place from where Gandhi Ji led India’s struggle for freedom from the British colonial rule for more than a decade.
  • Boris Johnson is also the first British PM to visit Gujarat post-1947.
  • Currently, he is on a 2-day visit to India.

 

7) IIT Delhi partners with Binance to issue NFT tickets

  • IIT Delhi has partnered with Binance, a crypto exchange, and blockchain platform.
  • It will provide non-fungible token (NFT) tickets and proof of attendance protocol (PoAP) during its upcoming three-day cultural fest ‘Rendezvous’ to be held 24-26 April 2022.
  • Binance will also organize competitions on crypto trading and NFT arts, along with a webinar ‘crypto for all’ on crypto on 1 May 2022.

 

8) Jasprit Bumrah among Wisden’s five ‘Cricketers of the Year’

  • India captain Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah have been named among five players in Wisden’s ‘Cricketers of the Year’ in the 2022 edition of the Almanack.
  • The list also features New Zealand’s, Devon Conway.
  • England’s Joe Root has been named the leading cricketer in the world, while South African women’s team batter Lizelle Lee has been awarded the title of leading woman cricketer.

 

9) India’s first pure green hydrogen plant commissioned in Jorhat

  • Oil India Ltd commissioned India’s first 99.99% pure green hydrogen pilot plant at its Jorhat Pump Station in Assam on 20 Apr 2022.
  • It has an installed capacity of 10 kg per day and was commissioned in a record time of 3 months.
  • The plant produces green hydrogen from the electricity generated by the existing 500kW Solar plant using a 100 kW Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Electrolyser array.

 

10) Shivamogga airport to be named after BS Yediyurappa

  • Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has announced that the under-construction Shivamogga airport will be named after former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
  • The airport, with international standard facilities, will be inaugurated in Dec 2022.
  • The project has been taken up under the Udaan programme.
  • It will have the 2nd longest runway in Karnataka after Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

 

11) NTPC collaborates with Delhi Jal Board to convert waste into energy

  • NTPC Ltd has come together with Delhi Jal Board to utilize the sludge produced in the sewage treatment plants (STP) of DJB.
  • The torrefied waste sludge was fired from NTPC’s unit 4 Boiler at Dadri.
  • This solution is an innovative way to convert STP sludge into energy via environmental friendly means to reduce CO2 emissions.
  • In Delhi NCR alone, STPS produce up to 800 MT of sludge per day.

12) Churu and Bishnupur districts receive PM’s Award for Excellence

  • Districts Bishnupur (Manipur) and Churu (Rajasthan) were presented Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration in Khelo India, on 21 April 2022.
  • They were awarded for promoting excellence in sports and wellness through the Khelo India scheme in New Delhi.
  • The winners received a trophy, a scroll, and an incentive of Rs 20 lakh for the implementation of the programme.

 

13) Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit inaugurated

  • On 20 April 2022, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Ayush Investment & Innovation Summit 2022 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • The three-day summit will witness 5 plenary sessions, 8 roundtables, 6 workshops, and 2 symposiums, with the presence of around 90 eminent speakers and 100 exhibitors.
  • The Summit will help uncover investment potential and give a fillip to innovation, R&D, etc.

 

14) OneWeb inks pact with ISRO commercial arm for satellite launches

  • Bharti group-backed OneWeb and New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of ISRO, have entered into an agreement that will help ensure OneWeb completes its satellite launch programme.
  • The first launch with New Space India is expected in 2022 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota.
  • The launches will add to OneWeb’s total in-orbit constellation of 428 satellites.

 

15) NITI Aayog, UNICEF to assess status of India’s children

  • NITI Aayog and UNICEF have signed a deal on sustainable development goals with a focus on children.
  • It seeks to formalize a framework of cooperation to launch the first report on the ‘state of India’s children: status and trends in multidimensional child development.
  • Both will study the extent of development and deprivation among children in India, on parameters like health, education, etc.

 

16) World Creativity and Innovation Day: 21 April

  • The UN-designated 21 April to be celebrated as the World Creativity and Innovation Day.
  • The main idea is to push creative multi-disciplinary thinking among different countries, at both the individual and group level.
  • The day is part of the World Creativity Week celebrations, which last from 15 to 21 April every year.
  • It was founded in Toronto, Canada by Canadian Marci Segal, on 25 May 2001.

 

17) UK PM Johnson inaugurates British manufacturer JCB’s Vadodara facility

  • On a two-day visit to India, UK PM Boris Johnson inaugurated British equipment manufacturer JCB’s Vadodra unit, on 21 April 2022.
  • The Vadodra factory, set up at an estimated investment of 100 million pounds, will fabricate parts for the company’s global production lines.
  • The new facility, sitting on a 47-acre site, will be capable of processing 85,000 tonnes of steel annually.

 

18) India Post Payments Bank launches ‘Fincluvation’

  • India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has announced the launch of Fincluvation.
  • It is a joint initiative to collaborate with the Fintech startup community to co-create and innovate solutions for financial inclusion.
  • Fincluvation will allow the start-ups to work with IPPB and Dept of Posts experts to develop solutions and conduct pilots using the postal network and IPPB’s technology stack.

 

19) Wipro appoints Satya Easwaran as Country Head of India

  • Wipro has appointed Satya Easwaran as the Country Head for India.
  • Satya will be in charge of strengthening Wipro’s business in India across key industry sectors through strategic consulting, transformation, and modernization engagements.
  • Prior to joining Wipro, Easwaran was the Head of Business Consulting and the Telecom, Media & Technology (TMT) Sector Leader at KPMG India.

 

20) Fino Payments Bank receives RBI nod to offer Suryoday SFB’s services

  • Fino Payments Bank has received RBI’s approval for commencing referral services of fixed deposits and recurring deposits as a business correspondent of Suryoday Small. Finance Bank (SFB).
  • Fino Bank is a subsidiary of Fino Paytech.
  • It had earlier partnered with Suryoday SFB for offering a sweep account facility to its customers, to address the 1 lakh end-of-day deposit limit.

 

21) DefConnect 2.0 to be organised by iDEX-DIO in New Delhi on 22 April

  • Innovations for Defence Excellence, Defence Innovation Organisation (IDEX-DIO) is organising DefConnect 2.0 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 22 Apr 22.
  • It will be organised under the aegis of Department of Defence Production (DDP).
  • It will be inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
  • It will provide an opportunity for innovators to showcase their capabilities, products and technologies.

 

22) MoU signed between Indian Navy and Larsen and Toubro

  • An MoU was signed on 20 April 2022, between the Indian Navy (IN) and Larsen and Toubro (L&T).
  • The MoU aims to engage L&T as a knowledge partner for nurturing technologies in various domains, for induction into the Indian Navy.
  • The MoU encompasses all the aspects related to electrical, weapon, engineering, machinery and control, and hull of a naval warship.
