1) India hosts joint meet of finance, health ministers
- India hosted a joint meeting of finance and health ministers from G20 member countries in Gujarat.
- The meeting aimed to strengthen the global health architecture and ensure preparedness and response for future pandemics.
- The meeting was co-chaired by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, health minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and WHO director-general Tedros Ghebreyesus.
2) Govt launches wedding tourism campaign to show India as premier venue
- The Ministry of Tourism has launched a campaign to promote India as a premier wedding destination globally.
- The campaign aims to attract couples from around the world to celebrate their special day in India.
- The campaign seeks to expand India’s wedding industry and explore new avenues of potential.
- The campaign was launched by Union Minister for Tourism G Kishan Reddy.
3) Indonesia seeks to emulate India’s Jan Aushadhi Kendra model
- Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin visited a Jan Anushadhi Kendra in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on 20 August 2023.
- Sadikin praised India’s healthcare model and sought to replicate the same PM Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana in Indonesia.
- Jan Aushadhi Kendras provide affordable medicines to senior citizens and middle-class families in India, with prices ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 20.
4) India’s Anahat Singh clinches gold in Asian Junior Squash
- India’s Anahat Singh clinched the gold medal in the U-17 category of the Asian Junior Squash Championships, held in Dalian, China.
- She defeated Hong Kong’s Ena Kwong 3-1 in the final.
- She also has a bronze medal win, at Macau in the U-13 category in 2019.
- 9 She also represented India in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, becoming the youngest Indian athlete at 14 in the competition.
5) U’khand CM ends obligation of law officers to represent govt at HC
- On the directions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the state government has ended the obligation of law officers to represent the government in the High Court at Nainital.
- He also held a review meeting of centrally funded schemes and externally aided projects.
- He directed officials that 100% of funds received from the central govt should be spent on development works.
6) Maha govt to organize “Pro Govinda” competition on Janmashtami
- Maharashtra government has planned to organize “Pro Govinda” competition for this year’s ‘Dahi Handi’ event with cash prizes.
- The competition will take place at the NSCI dome in Worli, Mumbai, and the pot will be suspended at a height of 40ft.
- Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recognized Dahi-Handi as a sport in Maharashtra in 2022 on the occasion of Janmashtami.
7) 115th birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram celebrated in Tripura
- The 115th birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur was organised by the Tripura government.
- Chief Minister Manik Saha paid tributes to the visionary ruler at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, Agartala on 19 Aug 2023.
- He established educational institutions and worked to promote literacy among his subjects.
- Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur was born on Aug 19, 1908.
8) UP CM holds Janata Darshan, directs to act against land grabbers
- Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held Janata Darshan at his official residence in Lucknow on 20 August 2023.
- He directed the officers to deal sternly with those involved in land grabbing and encroachments, or those causing trouble to the weaker sections of society.
- The officers were instructed to expedite the estimation process related to medical treatment.
9) Srinagar’s Tulip Garden enters World Book of Records as Asia’s largest
- The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar has been recognized as Asia’s largest tulip haven by the World Book of Records in London.
- The garden has collection of 1.5 million tulip bulbs that showcase 68 distinct tulip varieties.
- The garden also provides sanctuary to an array of other flower species such as Daffodils, Hyacinths, Roses, Ranunculi, Muscaria, and Iris blooms.
10) Spain beat England 1-0 to become Women’s World Cup champions
- Spain’s women’s football team won the World Cup 2023 for the first time after beating England 1-0 in Sydney, Australia on 20 August 2023.
- Spain’s Olga Carmona scored the winner goal against England.
- Spain is the first European side to win the tournament since Germany in 2007, and one of only two nations to have won both the men’s and women’s World Cup.
11) ICC unveils two mascots for ODI World Cup 2023
- The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled its mascots for the upcoming World Cup 2023.
- The mascots represent the spirit and unity that cricket promotes across the globe.
- The event was attended by ICC U-19 women’s and men’s winning captains Shefali Verma and Yash Dhull.
- The mascots, a male and a female, originate from a distant cricket paradise called the Crictoverse.
12) P. R. Seshadri appointed new MD & CEO of South Indian Bank
- The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of P. R. Seshadri as the Managing Director and CEO of South Indian Bank.
- The appointment will be for a period of three years with effect from October 1.
- Seshadri is an accomplished banker and has also served as Managing Director & CEO of The Karur Vysya Bank Limited (KVB), Managing Director of Citibank
13) Sadbhavana Diwas: 20 August 2023
- Sadbhavana Diwas, also known as Harmony Day, is an annual celebration observed on the 20th of August in India.
- 20th August 2023 marks the 79th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
- Rajiv Gandhi, born on 20th August 1944, is the former Prime Minister of India. He held office from 1984-1989 and significantly contributed to the country’s development.
14) Nitin Gadkari to launch the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme
- Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will launch the much-awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) on 22 August 2023.
- The programme aims to provide a tool for car customers to make a comparative assessment of the crash safety of motor vehicles.
- Under this programme, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their cars tested as per Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.
15) Russia’s Luna 25 spacecraft crashes on moon
- Russia’s first moon mission in 47 years failed when its Luna 25 spacecraft crashed into the moon’s surface.
- The Luna-25 mission was an ambitious undertaking by Russia, aimed at landing a spacecraft on the Moon’s south pole.
- This region garnered intense scientific interest due to its potential to contain water ice, a precious resource for future lunar endeavours.
