1) International Chess Day: 20 July
- International Chess Day is celebrated annually on 20 July, the day the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded in 1924.
- The day was proposed by UNESCO, and it has been celebrated as such since 1966 after it was established by FIDE.
- The 2023 year’s theme of International Chess Day focuses on making the game universal and more accessible to everyone.
2) IIT Guwahati signs MoU with Indian Council of World Affairs
- The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati signed an MOU with the Indian Council of World Affairs to build skills in international affairs and foreign policy.
- The collaboration aims to expand awareness and knowledge of international affairs and Indian foreign policy.
- Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar announced this collaboration during his address at the 25th Convocation of IIT Guwahati.
3) UP govt to work for beautification of 948 ‘heritage trees’
- The Uttar Pradesh government has launched the Heritage Tree Adoption Scheme to conserve and beautify 948 heritage trees across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
- 28 species of trees, which are more than 100 years old, have been designated as heritage trees.
- Uttar Pradesh has a total of 948 heritage trees, with most of them found in Varanasi.
4) Rakesh Pal appointed as 25th Director General of Indian Coast Guard
- Rakesh Pal has been appointed as the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
- He is an alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy and has been with the Indian Coast Guard since January 1989.
- He holds the recognition of being the First Gunner of ICG.
- He has been conferred with the award of Tatrakshak Medal (TM) and President Tatrakshak Medal (PTM).
5) Indian Coast Guard
- The Indian Coast Guard was established in 1978 as an independent armed force of India.
- Its primary role is to protect India’s maritime interests and enforce maritime law.
- It operates under the Ministry of Defence.
- It has jurisdiction over India’s territorial waters, exclusive economic zone, and continental shelf.
- The ICG has a motto “Vayam Rakshamah” which means “We Protect”.
6) Gujarat to host 69th edition of Filmfare awards in 2024
- Gujarat will host the 69th edition of the Filmfare Awards in 2024.
- The state government’s Tourism Corporation signed an MoU with Worldwide Media to host the event and promote Gujarat as a film destination.
- It will be the first time that Gujarat will host the Filmfare Awards.
- The event will showcase Gujarat’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and infrastructure.
7) Lokesh M replaces Ritu Maheshwari as CEO of Noida
- Kanpur’s divisional commissioner Lokesh M replaced Ritu Maheshwari as Noida Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
- A 2003-batch IAS officer of the UP cadre, Maheshwari had been serving as Noida CEO since July 2019 after holding the post of the Ghaziabad district magistrate.
- She is also the Managing Director of Noida Metro Rail Corporation.
8) Ex-Intel India head Nivruti Rai appointed as MD & CEO of Invest India
- Nivruti Rai is the new Managing Director and CEO of Invest India.
- She took over the charge from Manmeet K Nanda on July 12, 2023.
- Nivruti Rai is a recipient of the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar for her remarkable contributions to technology.
- She led Intel India as Country Head for seven years.
- Invest India helps investors looking for investment opportunities and options in India.
9) Odisha CM announces Rs 56 cr financial aid to tendu leaf workers
- Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced additional financial assistance of Rs 56 crores for tendu leaf pluckers and binders in the state.
- More than 8 lakh beneficiaries will be benefited from this financial assistance.
- The bonus and incentive amount will be available to tendu leaf beneficiaries in July 2023.
- Tendu leaves are widely used in making bidis.
