1) Indus water talks between India, Pakistan begin in New Delhi

  • India and Pakistan on 30 May 2022 began another round of the Permanent Indus Commission meeting.
  • This meeting is held annually under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) 1960.
  • The last meeting was held on March 23-24, 2021 in New Delhi.
  • The Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan, to use the water available in the Indus River and its tributaries.

 

2) Border Coordination Conference between BSF-BGB begins in Bangladesh

  • The Inspector-General BSF- Regional Commander BGB level Border Coordination Conference between India and Bangladesh started in Sylhet on 30 May 2022.
  • The four-day conference will conclude on June 2, 2022.
  • A five-member BSF delegation led by IG BSF Sumit Sharan is attending the conference.
  • The Bangladesh delegation of BGB is led by Brigadier General Tanvir Gani Chowdhury.

 

3) IIT Madras develops algorithm to protect air traffic control

  • Researchers at IIT Madras have developed an algorithm-powered novel strategy to mitigate disruptions in critical networks such as air traffic control and power distribution during a targeted attack.
  • The work has been published in “Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications”.
  • The algorithm is also highly effective in increasing the robustness of canonical scale-free networks.

 

4) NARCL appoints Natarajan Sundar as CEO

  • National Assets Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) has informed that Natarajan Sundar has assumed the charge of MD and CEO of the Rs 6,000-crore bad bank.
  • Prior to this, Sundar was Deputy Managing Director and Chief Credit Officer of SBI.
  • He retired on April 30, 2022.
  • NARCL has also appointed Karnam Sekar as the independent director and non-executive chairman of the board.

 

5) LIC launches Bima Ratna, a savings life insurance plan

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India has launched a savings life insurance plan called Bima Ratna.
  • The non-linked, non-participating, individual scheme offers a range of protection and savings.
  • Bima Ratna plan is aimed at providing financial support to the family in case of the unfortunate death of the policyholder during the policy term.

 

6) NTPC releases biodiversity policy for environment conservation

  • NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated energy producer has issued renewed Biodiversity Policy 2022 to establish a comprehensive vision and guiding principle for conservation, restoration, and enhancement of biodiversity.
  • This Biodiversity Policy is an integral part of NTPC’s Environmental Policy.
  • NTPC was the first PSU to issue Biodiversity Policy in 2018.
  • It was founded on 7 November 1975.

 

7) Sanjit Narwekar conferred with V Shantaram Lifetime achievement award

  • 17th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival of India (MIFF 2022) has conferred Dr. V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award to Sanjit Narwekar.
  • The award comprises of cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs, trophy and a citation.
  • Narwekar is a National award-winning film historian, author, publisher and documentary filmmaker with more than four decades of cross-media experience.

 

8) Red Bull’s Sergio Perez won Monaco F1 Grand Prix 2022

  • Red Bull’s racing driver Sergio Pérez (Mexican) won the Monaco Grand Prix on 29 May 2022.
  • The event was held at Circuit de Monaco, Monaco, Europe.
  • With this victory, Sergio Pérez has become the first Mexican to win the Monaco Grand Prix, and the first North American to win it since Gilles Villeneuve in 1981.
  • The 2nd position was occupied by the Ferrari racing driver Carlos Sainz Jr.

 

9) India sends consignment of 40,000 MT of diesel to Sri Lanka

  • India has delivered one more consignment of 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel to Sri Lanka.
  • It has been sent to help ease the acute fuel shortage in the debt-ridden country.
  • India on May 23, 2022 delivered around 40,000 metric tonnes of petrol to Sri Lanka.
  • India extended an additional USD 500 million credit line to Sri Lanka in April 2022 to help the neighbouring country import fuel.

 

10) IIT Delhi study reveals mechanisms driving SARS-CoV-2 evolution

  • Researchers at IIT Delhi have revealed the mechanisms driving the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in humans.
  • According to the seven-member research team, CpG (a cytosine followed by a guanine) numbers in virus genomes have been linked to host-switching, the efficiency of virus replication, immune evasion, and the ability of a virus to cause disease.

 

11) Indian women’s shooting team bags gold at ISSF World Cup 2022 in Baku

  • Indian women’s shooting team bagged a gold medal for India in the 10m air rifle women’s team event at the ISSF World Cup 2022 in Baku on 31 May 2022.
  • The Indian team comprises Elavenil Valarivan, Shreya Agarwal and Ramita.
  • This was India’s first medal at the ongoing ISSF World Cup in Baku.
  • The trio from India defeated Denmark 17-5 in the gold medal match.

12) Bharat Dynamics inks Rs 2,971-cr contract with Defense Ministry

  • The Ministry of Defence signed a contract on 31 May 2022 with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for building Astra Mark-1 Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Air-to-Air missiles (AAM) worth Rs 2,971 crore.
  • The Astra Mark-1 missile has been developed by the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The missiles will be delivered to the Indian Air Force as well as to the Indian Navy.

 

13) Former Albania president Bujar Nishani passes away

  • Former president of Albania Bujar Nishani passed away on May 28 2022 due to serious health problems.
  • He served as the president of Albania from 2012 until 2017.
  • At 45, he was elected as the youngest and sixth president in post-communist Albania.
  • Albania is a country in Southeastern Europe.

14) Frontier dethrones Fugaku as the world’s fastest supercomputer

  • Frontier, a supercomputer built by the USA, outperformed Japan’s Fugaku to become the world’s fastest supercomputer.
  • Frontier is built for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and it has reached Linmark benchmark score of 1.1 exaflops.
  • It has also become the world’s first supercomputer to break the exascale speed barrier.

 

15) PMBI crosses sales of Rs 100 crores in May 2022

  • The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) has clocked its highest monthly sales turnover of Rs 100 crores in May 2022.
  • PMBI is the implementing agency of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
  • The government has also set a target to increase the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras to 10,000 by March 2024.

 

16) Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai launched AAYU app

  • Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on 29 May 2022 launched a new health and wellness app AAYU to address and help heal chronic diseases and lifestyle disorders through yoga and meditation.
  • The app has been developed by Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA) in partnership with RESET TECH.
  • AAYU addresses the root cause of the diseases going beyond temporary care.

 

17) Uttar Pradesh Hockey wins 12th Hockey India Junior Men National C’ship

  • Uttar Pradesh Hockey, on 29 May 2022, won the 12th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship by defeating Hockey Chandigarh (2-0) in the final.
  • The final match was held in Kovilpatti ,Tamil Nadu.
  • Hockey Haryana claimed third place in the competition with a 3-0 win against Hockey Odisha.
  • Uttar Pradesh Hockey had also won the 11th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship in 2021.
