1) Punjab govt starts mission ‘Hope Initiative’ to make state drug free
- In Punjab, efforts to make the state completely drug-free are going at different levels currently.
- The state government also started the mission ‘Hope Initiative’ in this regard from Amritsar.
- This anti-drug ‘Hope Initiative’ has been embarked with a three fold strategy of Pray, Pledge, and Play which is first of its kind mass movement against drugs to break the backbone of this menace.
2) National Handicrafts Exhibition ‘Gandhi Bunkar Mela’ begins in Kolkata
- National Handicrafts Exhibition- Gandhi Bunkar Mela began on Wednesday (18th October 2023) in Kolkata under the initiative of the Union Ministry of Textiles.
- The main aim is to increase the marketing of khadi textiles across the country and to generate people’s interest in khadi products.
- The fair will continue till October 31.

4) Adani Group’s Vizhinjam Port is a maritime game changer for India
- Adani Group’s Vizhinjam Port (set to be completed by 2024) (near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala), is poised to transform the country’s maritime infrastructure.
- India’s first deepwater container transhipment.
- This transhipment terminal can handle ultra-large ships and marks India’s entry into the transhipment club.
5) Jhulaghat Suspension Bridge now fully operational
- The Jhulaghat transit in the Baitadi district connecting Nepal and India has come into full operation from Wednesday (18th October 2023).
- Being under construction, the suspension bridge over the Mahakali River was partially operational.
- With the full operation of the crossing during the Dashain festival, locals are happy.
6) Lao PDR eliminated lymphatic filariasis
- The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) has successfully eliminated lymphatic filariasis (LF), a mosquito-borne infectious disease, becoming the second country to achieve this in 2023 after Bangladesh.
- Lao PDR is the 11th country in the WHO Western Pacific Region to eliminate LF.
- LF, also known as elephantiasis, causes severe health issues.
7) Arunachal Pradesh approves Special Tiger Protection Force
- The Arunachal Pradesh State Cabinet on Wednesday (18th October 2023) approved the constitution of Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) in the State for three Tiger Reserves of the State namely- Namdapha, Pakke and Kamlang.
- This decision will result in the creation of 336 regular posts in the state.
- The cabinet observed that this will lead to protection of Tigers and their habitats.
8) Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey flags off ‘Green Plate EV Rally’ in New Delhi
- Union Heavy Industries Minister Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey flagged off the ‘Green Plate EV Rally’ at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
- The event was hosted by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) in partnership with the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
- The rally showcased a fleet of over 100 electric vehicles (EVs), including 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, cars and buses.
9) Indra Sena Reddy Nallu have been appointed Governor of Tripura
- Indra Sena Reddy Nallu is a national secretary of the BJP and has thrice served as an MLA in Andhra Pradesh.
- Currently, Satyadev Narayan Arya is serving as the 19th governor of Tripura.
- He is a BJP leader from Bihar and has previously served as a Governor of Haryana.
10) Raghubar Das appointed as the Governor of Odisha
- Former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das was appointed governor of Odisha.
- Das served as the first non-tribal CM of Jharkhand from 2014 to 2019 and is a former RSS functionary.
- The 68-year-old leader, belonging to the OBC community, was elected to the Bihar and Jharkhand assembly five times and represented Jamsedpur East assembly seat from 1995 to 2019.
11) PM Modi to inaugurate India’s first Regional Rail, RAPIDX in UP
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s first Regional Rail, RAPIDX from Sahibabad, Uttar Pradesh.
- The first phase will cover a distance of 17 kilometers which includes a total of five stations – Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai Depot.
- The trains will run at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour at an interval of 15 minutes.
12) World Food Day: WWF’s report: The High Cost of Cheap Water
- The WWF’s report, titled “The High Cost of Cheap Water,” warns of a growing global water crisis that poses a threat to $58 trillion in economic value, food security, and sustainability.
- The report, released on World Food Day (16th Oct), presents the first-ever annual estimate of the economic value of water and freshwater ecosystems
13) Australian exploring “marine cloud brightening”
- Australian researchers are exploring the concept of “marine cloud brightening” as a potential solution to mitigate coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef caused by extreme heat.
- This method aims to delay coral bleaching during marine heatwaves, potentially buying more time for the reef’s recovery.
14) Kuwait’s ambitious economic legislation aims to transform Gulf Nation
- In a move to bolster its economic prowess and elevate itself into a financial hub in the Arab Gulf region, the State of Kuwait is fervently working on comprehensive economic legislation to facilitate critical projects.
- This significant development was unveiled by Diplomatic Attaché Meteb Al-Enezi during a session with a United Nations committee discussing global trade law.
