1) IndiGo appoints KLM’s Pieter Elbers as CEO
- InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of low-cost carrier IndiGo, appointed Pieter Elbers as its new Chief Executive Officer on 18 May.
- Mr Elbers will succeed Ronojoy Dutta as chief executive officer of IndiGo when the 71-year-old retires later this year.
- Mr Elbers is the first foreign chief executive of IndiGo airlines.
- IndiGo is the largest airline in India with a 53.5% market share.
2) Gujarat CM inaugurates the first ‘Vadnagar International Conference’
- Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the first ‘Vadnagar International Conference’ at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on 18 May on the occasion of World Museum Day.
- The 3-day conference has been organized to promote Archaeological Heritage and Culture, in association with the Ministry of Culture and UNESCO.
- The conference is supported by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
3) World bank sanctions USD 350 million to Gujarat’s SRESTHA-G project
- The World Bank has approved USD 350 million as financial aid for the implementation of Systems Reform Endeavours for Transformed Health Achievement in Gujarat (SHRESTHA-G).
- The aid has been sanctioned to the state under the project to improve the health facilities and services.

4) MyGov Karnataka launched to promote participatory governance in state
- MyGov Karnataka was launched by Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai on 17 May 2022.
- Karnataka becomes the 17th state to have its own MyGov state instance.
- MyGov Karnataka will work as an idea crowdsourcing platform and aims to promote active citizen participation and engagement in governance and policymaking.
- Citizens can register on karnataka.mygov.in to share their opinions.
5) May 18 – World AIDS Vaccine Day
- Every year on May 18, the world commemorates World AIDS Vaccine Day.
- The day is observed to honour the efforts of hundreds of scientists and medical professionals who are working persistently to develop a vaccine to combat the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
- The day is also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day.
- World AIDS Vaccine Day was observed for the first time in 1998.
6) President of India addresses joint sitting of Parliament of Jamaica
- The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind addressed the Joint Sitting of both Houses of Parliament of Jamaica in Kingston on May 17.
- President Kovind has become first Indian President to visit Jamaica. He is on a 4 day visit to the Caribbean country.

7) Government announces formation of Cotton Council of India
- The Union Government has announced the formation of the Cotton Council of India under the Chairmanship of Suresh Bhai Kotak.
- It will have representation from Textiles, Agriculture, Commerce, and Finance Ministries along with Cotton Corporation of India and Cotton Research Institute.
- The first meeting of the proposed council has been scheduled for 28 May 2022.
8) India signs fertilizer pacts with Jordan
- The Indian government has signed key fertilizer pacts with Jordan as supplies, and prices of the key the agriculture commodity get impacted due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
- India’s Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya was in Jordan from May 13 to 15 for securing long and short-term supplies of fertilizers.
- Russia has been among the largest exporter of fertilizer.
9) Deaflympics 2021 – India won a total of 16 medals
- India’s largest contingent ever at a Deaflympics – 65 athletes, returned with a total of 16 medals from the event. These include 8 Gold, 1 silver, and 7 bronze.
- This was India’s richest medal haul at the Deaflympics. India finished in the ninth. position on the medal table.
- The shooting team picked up the most – 3 gold and 2 bronze.
- The Deaflympics 2021 were held in Caxias do Sul, Brazil.
10) International Museum Day: 18 May
- International Museum Day is celebrated on May 18 every year.
- The International Council Of Museums (ICOM) has been celebrating this day since 1977.
- The theme for 2022 is “The Power of Museums”.
- A museum describes the journey of a nation from prehistory to modernity by displaying enriched historical artifacts such as tools, weapons, clothes, and jewelry.

11) Kenton Cool becomes first foreigner to scale Everest 16 times
- A British climber scaled the world’s highest mountain for the 16th time in May 2022 becoming the first foreign climber to make the most Mt Everest summits.
- Kenton Cool from Gloucestershire, South West England, also broke his own British record for the most summits of the world’s highest peak.
- American climber Dave Hahn has climbed Mt Everest 15 times.
12) Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar selected for Commonwealth Games
- Tokyo Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya made it into the Indian men’s wrestling team for the Commonwealth Games.
- They are among six wrestlers who were selected at the trials for the senior freestyle wrestling held in New Delhi on 17 May 2022.
- The Commonwealth Games 2022 will be held in Birmingham, UK from 28th July to 8th August 2022.
13) Ministry of Heavy Industries signs MoU with NRDC
- Ministry of Heavy Industries has signed an MoU with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC).
- It has been signed for undertaking various activities for smooth implementation of the Capital Goods Scheme for enhancement of competitiveness in the Indian capital goods sector.
- NRDC will conduct the activities like evaluation of the scheme, management of intellectual property rights, etc.
14) National Emergency Life Support (NELS) courses launched
- Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar launched National Emergency Life Support (NELS) courses for doctors, nurses and paramedics, on 18 May 2022.
- The program also includes developing training infrastructure in all States/UTs to implement the NELS course and creating a cadre of trainers to train doctors, nurses and paramedics.
15) Banking Frauds Dip 51% To Rs 40,295 Crore
- Public sector banks reported over 51 per cent dip in the amount involved in frauds to Rs 40,295.25 crore during the financial year ended March 2022, the Reserve Bank of India has said.
- The 12 PSBS (Public Sector Banks) had reported frauds worth Rs 81,921.54 crore in preceding fiscal 2020-21.
- The country’s largest lender State Bank of India reported frauds worth Rs 6,932.37 crore.
16) Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal resigns
- Anil Baijal resigned as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor on 18 May.
- He submitted his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind citing personal reasons.
- He took over as the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on December 31 in 2016, following the resignation of his predecessor Najeeb Jung.
- He has served a long tenure of more than five years and four months.
- He is a 1969-batch IAS officer.
18) Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games postponed due to Covid
- The 2022 Asian Para Games that were scheduled to take place in Hangzhou have been postponed due to the COVID-19.
- This was announced by the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) and the Games’ organizing committee (HAPGOC).
- A task force formed by the two committees and the Chinese Paralympic Committee will work on rescheduling the Games — originally set for October 9-15, 2022.
19) India overtakes Germany to become 4th largest vehicle market
- According to the report released by Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA), India has surpassed Germany to become 4th largest vehicle market in the world.
- The 1st is occupied by China, followed by the US and Japan.
- India is expected to become the third-largest Vehicle market by 2025.

20) Indian Navy conducts successful flight-test of anti-ship missile
- DRDO and Indian Navy successfully conducted first flight-test of indigenously-developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile on May 18, 2022.
- It was launched from a Naval Helicopter from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha
- The mission met all its objectives.
- It is the first indigenous air launched anti-ship missile system for the Indian Navy.
21) Airtel re-appoints Gopal Vittal as MD and CEO for 5 years
- Bharti Airtel’s board has reappointed Gopal Vittal as Managing Director and CEO for a further period of five years ending on January 31, 2028.
- The reappointment came on a day the telco. posted consolidated net profit at Rs 2,007.8 crore in the March quarter, up 141% sequentially and 164% on the year.
- This was Airtel’s sixth successive quarter in the black after six straight losses earlier.
