1) Nelson Mandela International Day: 18 July
- Every year on July 18, Mandela Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of the former President of South Africa.
- The United Nations officially designated Nelson Mandela International Day or Mandela Day in November 2009.
- The day is celebrated worldwide to commemorate achievements of the anti-apartheid leader.
- He was the country’s first black president.
2) Arunachal Pradesh & Assam sign pact to resolve border dispute
- Assam & Arunachal Pradesh on 15 July 2022 signed the ‘Namsai Declaration’ in a step toward resolving their 7-decade-old boundary dispute.
- It was signed at Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh between chief minister Pema Khandu and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma.
- They agreed to restrict the number of contested villages to 86 instead of 123.
- The two states share an 804-km long boundary.
3) MSME Minister Narayan Rane launches ‘Mobile Electric Charging’ app
- Union Minister of Micro, Small, & Medium Enterprises Narayan Rane launched ‘Repos Pay – a ‘Mobile Electric Charging’ platform on 15 July 2022.
- He launched it at the ‘Fuelling India 2022’ event in Mumbai.
- ‘Repos Pay’ is a platform where one can order a Mobile Electric Charging Vehicle on app & charge their vehicles.
- Mr Rane also launched ‘Phy-gital’ – a Fintech Platform at the same event.
4) England all-rounder Ben Stokes announces retirement from ODI cricket
- England all-rounder Ben Stokes on 18 July 2022 announced that he will be retiring from one-day internationals (ODI).
- Stokes will play his last ODI for England on 19 July 2022 against South Africa.
- Stokes, who is England’s Test captain, has scored 2919 runs in 104 ODIs and taken 74 wickets.
- He was named the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World in 2019 & 2020.
- He made his ODI debut in 2011.
5) Netherlands wins FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2022
- The Netherlands clinched their ninth FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup by beating Argentina 3-1 in the final on 17 July 2022.
- Australia won the 3rd place match by defeating Germany to claim their first World Cup medal as well.
- India finished at 9th place in the World Cup.
- It was the 15th edition of the Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup.
- It was held from 1 to 17 July 2022 in Spain & the Netherlands.
6) Govt formulates ‘NAMASTE’ scheme for cleaning of sewers, septic tank
- The Union govt has formulated a ‘National Action Plan for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem – NAMASTE’ scheme for cleaning of sewers and septic tanks.
- It aims to achieve outcomes like zero fatalities in sanitation work in India & providing all Sewer and Septic tank sanitation workers alternative livelihoods.
- This scheme will be rolled out from 16 August 2022 across the 500 cities in India.
7) Manipur Governor La Ganesan give additional charge of West Bengal
- President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted the resignation of West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar who has been named as the ruling National Democratic Alliance candidate for the vice presidential election.
- Dhankhar was appointed as the Governor in 2019.
- La Ganesan, Governor of Manipur, has been appointed to discharge the functions of the Governor of West Bengal, in addition to his own duties.
8) Tamil Nadu Day: 18 July
- Tamil Nadu Day was celebrated on 18 July 2022 as it was on this day that a resolution was adopted by the then Madras Presidency in 1967 and it came to be called Tamil Nadu.
- It was on the 1st of November 1956 that Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala were separated from the Madras Presidency.
- But, it was in 1967 on the 18th of July that the remaining Madras Presidency was called Tamil Nadu.
9) Renowned artist Achuthan Kudallur passes away
- Noted artist Achuthan Kudallur passed away in Chennai on 18 July 2022, at the age of 77.
- A civil engineer by training, Achuthan Kudallur was a self-taught abstract artist and a highly respected name in contemporary art circles of south India.
- He was a part of the Madras Art Club.
- He was also the recipient of the Tamil Nadu Lalit Kala Akademi Award and the National Academy Award.
10) India emerges as top lender to Sri Lanka in first four months of 2022
- India has emerged as the top lender to Sri Lanka, extending $376.9 million worth of credit compared to $67.9 million by China in the first 4 months of 2022.
- After India, Asian Development Bank came in as the 2nd largest lender with $359.6 million.
- India’s full package of foreign assistance for Sri Lanka since the beginning of 2022 is worth $3.8 billion.
11) NTPC ties up with Indian Oil for renewable energy
- NTPC & Indian Oil Corporation signed an agreement for the formation of a joint. venture (JV) company for meeting the power requirements of upcoming projects of IndianOil refineries.
- Indian Oil plans to meet the additional power requirement of its refineries using renewable energy to the tune of 650MW by Dec 2024 through this JV.

12) Delhi Jal Board develops Al-run technology to clean sewage water
- In a first, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has developed an Al technology to treat water in its sewage treatment plants.
- This technology, called ISASMA-CD (Intelligence Self-Administered Self Monitored Automatic Chemical Dosing), has been introduced at four DJB plants in Delhi.
- Running with Al software, it shares real-time data & monitors the health of the plant as well as machines and equipment.
13) Ola Electric invests $500 Million in Bengaluru-based cell R&D facility
- Ola Electric is investing $500 million in a cell research and development facility in Bengaluru.
- The facility would house advanced labs and high-tech equipment for battery innovation.
- Ola recently unveiled its first Li-ion cell NMC 2170.
- The company was recently also allocated 20GWh capacity under the ACC PLI scheme by the government for developing advanced cells in India.
14) NITI Aayog and WFP to launch initiative on mainstreaming millets
- NITI Aayog and the World Food Programme (WFP), India, will launch the ‘Mapping and Exchange of Good Practices’ initiative for mainstreaming millets in Asia and Africa on 19 July 2022.
- Both will prepare a compendium of good practices for scaling up the production and consumption of millets in India and abroad.
- The event will be inaugurated by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery.
