1) Seed Traceability portal and mobile app launched

  • Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launched the SATHI (Seed Traceability, Authentication and Holistic Inventory) Portal and Mobile App, on 19 April 2023.
  • It has been developed by the NIC in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on the theme of ‘Uttam Beej – Samriddh Kisan’.

 

2) Cabinet approves National Quantum Mission

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the National Quantum Mission (NQM) at a total cost of Rs.6003.65 crore from 2023-24 to 2030-31.
  • The new mission targets developing intermediate scale quantum computers with 50-1000 physical qubits in 8 years in various platforms like superconducting and photonic technology.
  • Four Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) will be set up in top academic and National R&D institutes.

 

3) Rajnath Singh attends Biannual Army Commanders Conference

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the ongoing 1st edition of the biannual Army Commanders Conference in New Delhi, on 19 April 2023.
  • The conference is being attended by top Army commanders from across the country, who will discuss a wide range of issues related to national security and defence.
  • The Army Commanders Conference is held twice a year.

 

4) Ishan Kishan completes 4,000 runs in T20 Cricket

  • Indian cricketer Ishan Kishan has achieved the milestone of scoring 4,000 runs in T20 cricket.
  • Kishan reached the milestone while playing for the Mumbai Indians in a match against the Punjab Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
  • He has also represented India at the international level, making his debut in 2021 and scoring a half-century in his first match.

 

5) Sonam Wangchuk conferred with Prestigious Santokbaa Humanitarian Award

  • Sonam Wangchuk has been awarded the prestigious Santokbaa Humanitarian Award for his contributions to society.
  • He is best known for his work on the Ice Stupa project, which aims to address water scarcity in the Himalayas.
  • The Santokbaa Humanitarian Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to society in the areas of education, healthcare, and social welfare.

 

6) Argentina to replace Indonesia as under-20 FIFA World Cup host

  • Argentina will host the under-20 soccer World Cup.
  • It has replaced Indonesia, which was supposed to host it earlier.
  • FIFA announced the decision to remove Indonesia as host on March 29 2023 after the country’s FA cancelled the draw to be held in Bali as its governor refused to host Israel’s team.

  • India has overtaken China as the world’s most populous country with a total population of 1.39 bn people, according to the latest data from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
  • The UNFPA’s ‘The State of World Population Report, 2023’, titled ‘8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities: The Case for Rights and Choices’ said India’s population is 1,428.6 mn while China’s stood at 1425.7 mn.

 

9) Former Hyderabad Ranji opener Abdul Azeem passes away

  • Abdul Azeem, a former Hyderabad Ranji Trophy player, has passed away.
  • Azeem represented Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy during the 1980s and early 1990s.
  • He was a right-arm medium-fast bowler who also played for the Deccan Chronicle Cricket Club.
  • Azeem had to his credit a triple century against Tamil Nadu in the 1986 Ranji season.

 

10) Jyothi Surekha Vennam equals qualification world record in Turkey

  • Jyothi Surekha Vennam from India has equalled the world record for archery world cup qualification rounds in Turkey.
  • She scored 702 out of a possible 720 points to achieve the feat.
  • Jyothi Surekha Vennam’s score of 702 points is the highest ever scored by an Indian woman in the history of the sport.
  • She achieved the feat at the third stage of the Archery World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
