1) Japan to attend NATO summit for first time

  • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will attend the NATO summit on 28 June ’22 in Madrid.
  • He will become Japan’s first leader to join a top meeting of The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
  • South Korea’s new President Yoon Suk-yeol will also be the first leader from his country to attend.
  • NATO is an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 member states.
  • ONATO founded – 1949

 

2) China launches third, most ‘advanced aircraft’ carrier named ‘Fujian’

  • China launched its third aircraft carrier named ‘Fujian’ on 17 June 2022.
  • It is China’s most advanced as well as the first “fully domestically built” naval vessel.
  • Fujian is the name of China’s eastern coastal province of Fujian.
  • China’s first aircraft carrier, the ‘Liaoning’, was commissioned in 2012 followed by the indigenously built 2nd aircraft carrier ‘Shandong’ in 2019.

 

3) IGNOU to offer a special three-year programme for ‘Agniveers’

  • The Ministry of Education announced on 15 June 2022 that it will launch a special three-year skill-based bachelor’s degree programme for serving defence personnel.
  • The Army, Navy and Air Force will sign an MoU with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for the implementation of the scheme.
  • ‘Agniveers’ who enrol in this programme will be awarded degrees by IGNOU.

 

4) CASHe launches industry first instant credit line on WhatsApp

  • CASHe, a Mumbai-based fintech platform, has launched an instant credit line service on WhatsApp.
  • The company will provide loans to customers within 30 seconds using its Al-driven chat capabilities on the instant messaging platform.
  • CASHe is a mobile-only credit-led financial wellness platform that was founded in 2016 by V Raman Kumar.

 

5) National Reading Day: 19 June

  • India celebrates June 19 as the National Reading Day in honour of P N Panicker, the father of the Library and Literacy Movement in Kerala.
  • It was started as a Reading Day celebration on June 19, 1996, by the Government of Kerala in association with the P N Panicker Foundation.
  • On this day many reading-related activities are organized across the country.

 

6) 1st ‘International Day for Countering Hate Speech’: 18 June 2022

  • The world observed the first ‘International Day for Countering Hate Speech’ on 18 June 2022.
  • The day aims to highlight the need for combating hate speech and promoting tolerance and dialogue between different people and groups.
  • The theme for 2022 is “Role of education to address the root causes of hate speech and advance inclusion, non-discrimination, and peace”

 

7) Neeraj Chopra clinches gold in 2022 Kuortane Games in Finland

  • Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal at the ongoing Kuortane Games in Finland on 18 June 2022.
  • Chopra took the top spot with a best throw of 86.69m.
  • Keshorn Walcott finished a close second with a throw of 86.64m while Anderson Peters was third with a best attempt of 84.75m.
  • On 14 June 2022, Chopra also broke his own national record with a throw of 89.30m at the Paavo Nurmi Games 2022.

 

8) Tamil Nadu pips West Bengal in terms of outstanding MFL portfolio

  • Tamil Nadu has displaced West Bengal to emerge as the largest State in terms of the outstanding portfolio of microfinance loans (MFL).
  • According to a report published by Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN), the gross loan portfolio (GLP) of Tamil Nadu as of March 31, 2022, stood at 36,806 crore.
  • It was followed by Bihar (35,941 crore) and West Bengal (34,016 crore).

 

9) China becomes the largest importer of Indian broken rice

  • China emerged as the top buyer of Indian rice during the pandemic, importing 16.34 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of India’s total rice export of 212.10 LMT in financial year 2021-22.
  • Out of China’s total rice import from India of 16.34 LMT, nearly 97 per cent was broken rice.
  • China is now the top buyer of Indian broken rice, which was earlier exported mostly to African countries.

 

10) CIET wins UNESCO award for use of ICT in school education

  • Central Institute of Educational Technology, a unit of NCERT has been awarded the UNESCO’s King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT (Information And Communication Technology) in Education for the year 2021.
  • The Prize rewards individuals and organisations that promote the creative use of technologies to enhance overall educational performance.
  • The prize was established in 2005.

 

11) Sustainable Gastronomy Day: 18 June

  • Sustainable Gastronomy Day is observed every year on June 18.
  • The objective of this day is to recognise the practices associated with sustainable food. consumption, especially with the art of collecting and preparing the food we eat.
  • Gastronomy refers to a style of cooking from a particular region.
  • This day was first adopted by the United Nations in the year 2016.

 

12) Indian women soldiers participate in ‘Women Peace & Security Seminar’

  • Women soldiers of the Indian Army participated in the four-day ‘Women Peace and Security’ Seminar at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
  • The four-day event kicked off on 16 June 2022 and is being held under the auspices of Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh.
  • Women soldiers participated in the seminar as a part of Indian Army contingent participating in ‘Ex Khaan Quest!

 

13) India ranks third in Renewable Energy Installations in 2021

  • India ranked 3rd in renewable energy installations in 2021, after China & Russia, according to a report released on 15 June ’22.
  • The report titled ‘Renewable Energy 2022: Global Status Report’ was published by REN21 (Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century).
  • India installed 15.4 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in 2021.
  • It also ranked 4th in total solar installations

 

14) 47th meeting of GST Council to be held on June 28-29 in Srinagar

  • The 47th Meeting of the GST Council will be held on June 28-29, 2022 in Srinagar.
  • This is the second time that the GST Council meeting is being held in Srinagar.
  • The 47th GST Council meeting is expected to discuss the report of the panel of state ministers on rate rationalisation.
  • The GST Council is chaired by the Union. Finance Minister.

 

15) World Refugee Day: 20 June

  • World Refugee Day is an international day organised every year on 20 June by the United Nations.
  • It celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
  • The theme for the year 2022 is ‘Right to Seek Safety!
  • The day was first observed on 20 June 2001.

 

16) RBI raises limit of e-mandates for transactions up to Rs 15,000

 

  • RBI on 16 June 2022 raised the Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA) limit from Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 per transaction for e-mandates on cards, Prepaid Payment Instruments, and UPI for recurring transactions.
  • It implies additional authentication will not be needed for payment of Rs 15,000 per transaction.

17) Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates ‘National Yoga Olympiad 2022’

  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on 18 June 2022 inaugurated National Yoga Olympiad 2022 and quiz competition in New Delhi.
  • It is being jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and the NCERT from June 18 to 20, 2022.
  • In the Yoga Olympiad, asana, pranayama, kriya, meditation etc are demonstrated by the students.
  • The NCERT started the National Yoga Olympiad in 2016.

 

18) Equitas Small Finance Bank launches exclusive savings account for Kids

  • Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited on 19 June 2022 launched ‘ENJOI, an exclusive savings account for kids.
  • It aims to introduce young kids to the financial world and encourage them to develop saving habits early.
  • ENJOI will allow kids of 0-18 years to open savings accounts under the supervision of their parents.
  • Minors aged 10 & above will also get an option for a personalised Debit Card.

 

19) Jio-bp and Zomato tie-up to accelerate EV adoption

  • Zomato and Jio-bp have entered into an agreement to support Zomato’s commitment towards “The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative of 100 per cent EV fleet by 2030”
  • As per the agreement, Jio-bp will provide EV mobility services to Zomato and access to ‘Jio-bp pulse’ battery swapping stations for last-mile delivery.
  • Jio-bp is a fuels and mobility joint venture between Reliance Industries and bp.
