1) Parshottam Rupala to inaugurate a conclave in Chennai

  • Union Minister Shri Parshottam Rupala to inaugrate International Conclave on Mainstreaming Climate Change into International Fisheries Governance and Strengthening of Fisheries Management Measures in the Indo-Pacific Region on 17th October 2023 at Mahabalipuram.
  • The 35th session of the Committee on Fisheries, held in Rome from 5-9 September 2022, recognized that the Regional Fishery Bodies.

 

2) INS Sumedha visit Lagos,Nigeria

  • INS Sumedha made a port call at Lagos, Nigeria on 13 October 2023 as part of its deployment to Gulf of Guinea.
  • Sumedha will also be undertaking Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with NNS Unity, with the aim to augment interoperability between both navies.
  • This is the Indian Navy’s second deployment to the piracy prone Gulf of Guinea (GoG)patrol after INS Tarkash in Oct 2022.

 

3) NASA has launched a spacecraft called ‘Psyche’

  • NASA has launched a spacecraft called ‘Psyche’ on a six-year mission to study a unique metal-rich asteroid also named ‘Psyche.’
  • This asteroid orbits the Sun between Mars and Jupiter.
  • The primary goal of the Psyche mission is to explore the iron core, a previously unexplored aspect of planet formation.

 

4) Dashboard for Data on Adoption and Forecasts of Electric Vehicles

  • Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh launched the EV-Ready India Dashboard.
  • According to the Power and New and Renewable Energy Ministry, the dashboard is a free digital platform focusing on near real-time electric vehicle adoption and forecasts, associated battery demand, charging density, and market growth trends.
  • 45 per cent growth in electric vehicles by 2030 expected.

 

5) 2023 Global Survey on Persons with Disabilities and Disasters

  • The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) conducted the 2023 Global Survey on Persons with Disabilities and Disasters, following up on the 2013 survey.
  • The report was released ahead of International Day for DRR (October 13).
  • Its theme “Fighting inequality for a resilient future” is aligned with the Sendai Framework.
  • Sendai Framework for DRR 2015–2030 recognizes PwD.

 

6) New toad species discovered in Dampa tiger reserve of Mizoram

  • A new species of toad, called Bufoides bhupathyi, has been discovered in the Dampa tiger reserve of Mizoram, India.
  • This marks the third species in a genus found in the north-eastern region of India.
  • The previous two species, Bufoides meghalayanus and Bufoides kempi, were found in Meghalaya.
  • It has been named after S Bhupathy, a prominent herpetologist.

 

7) PM Modi to virtually inaugurate third edition of Global Maritime India

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the third edition of the Global Maritime India Summit 2023.
  • The summit is scheduled to be held from 17th to 19th October at MMRDA Grounds in Mumbai.
  • This biggest maritime event is being organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
  • The session is also set to witness the participation of ministers from 12 countries.

 

8) Anti-money laundering: Sebi releases fresh set of guidelines

  • The Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued a set of amendments to strengthen anti-money laundering(AML) standards and combat finance terrorism (CFT).
  • These guidelines are based on rules established under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act of 2002.
  • The key amendments include: Additional Measures, Disclosing status, Identifying Beneficial Ownership.

 

9) Tamil Nadu’s first AI-based early warning system for elephant

  • Tamil Nadu is close to completing its first artificial intelligence (AI)-based early warning system designed to protect wild elephants from train collisions along the Ettimadai–Walayar railway section.
  • This initiative involves the installation of 12 e-surveillance towers equipped with thermal imaging cameras to monitor elephant movements.

 

10) IOC amends the Olympic Charter to strengthen its human rights subject

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made amendments to the Olympic Charter to strengthen its human rights commitments during its 141st Session.
  • These changes include additional wording in the Fundamental Principles of Olympism.
  • It includes: as an organization, as the owner of the Olympic Games, and as the leader of the Olympic Movement.

 

11) India’s first tilapia parvovirus reported in Tamil Nadu

  • It is a small, nonenveloped, single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) virus.
  • It was first reported in China in 2019 and Thailand in 2021.
  • India is the third country to report the occurrence of TiPV.
  • This virus was localized in the gills, heart, brain, liver, pancreas, spleen, intestine, kidney, eyes, and muscles of tilapia.

 

12) First Time in India: CAR-T cell therapy gets DCGI nod

  • India’s Drug Controller General (DCGI) has granted market authorization for CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor-T) cell therapy developed by ImmunoACT, a spin-off company from IIT-Bombay.
  • This ground-breaking treatment, known as NexCAR19, is now approved for use in cases of relapsed-refractory B-cell lymphoma and leukaemia.

 

13) Indian space economy: Decadal Vision and Strategy

  • The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) has unveiled a decadal vision and strategy for the Indian space economy, aiming to significantly boost its growth.
  • India’s space economy has potential to reach ₹35,200 crore ($44 billion) by 2033 with about 8% of global share.
  • IN-SPACe is India’s single-window autonomous agency under the Department of Space.
