1) India hosts SCO-RATS meeting on 16 May 2022

  • India hosted the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO’s) anti-terror body–Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) in New Delhi on 16 May 2022.
  • The meeting is taking place from 16-19 May 2022 and will see the participation of all members of the grouping, including Pakistan.
  • Earlier in Nov 2021, the third Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan was held in New Delhi.

 

2) Manik Saha sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Tripura

  • Manik Saha took oath as Tripura’s new Chief Minister on 15th May 2022.
  • Saha has replaced Biplab Kumar Deb, who resigned as chief minister on 14th May.
  • Saha, a professor of Dental Surgery, joined the BJP in 2016.

3) MSDE partners with Indian School of Business (ISB)

  • The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has partnered with the Indian School of Business (ISB) to conduct capacity-building programmes for MSDE officials.
  • A total of 120 officers (30 per batch) across divisions under MSDE would be undergoing a comprehensive five-day-long residential training across ISB Hyderabad and Mohali campuses.

 

4) Sikkim’s 47th Statehood Day: 16 May 2022

  • Sikkim celebrated its 47th statehood day on 16 May 2022.
  • It was on this day in 1975 that Sikkim had become the 22nd state of the Union of India following the 36th amendment of the Constitution.

5) International Day of Light: 16 May

  • The International Day of Light is celebrated on 16 May every year.
  • It commemorates the first successful operation of the laser by scientist and engineer Theodore Maiman in 1960.
  • The day celebrates the role light plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy.

 

6) Tata Power bags 300MW solar project worth 1,731 crore

  • Tata Power Company’s wholly-owned subsidiary Tata Power Solar Systems has won an order to build a 300-megawatt solar project for state-owned utility major NHPC at an all-inclusive price of ₹1,731 crores.
  • The project site, located in Rajasthan, will be developed under the CPSU scheme of IREDA.
  • Tata Power’s total renewable capacity is 4,920 MW including 1,400 MW of renewable projects.

 

7) RBI imposes Rs 59 lakh penalty on KEB Hana Bank

  • RBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 59 lakh on KEB Hana Bank.
  • The Korean bank has been penalised for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on “Reserve Bank of India (Interest Rate on Deposits) Directions, 2016”
  • The statutory inspection for supervisory evaluation of KEB Hana Bank was conducted by RBI with reference to its financial position as on March 31, 2020.

 

8) National Dengue Day: 16 May

  • National Dengue Day is observed in India every year on May 16 to create awareness about dengue as well as to intensify the preventive measures and preparedness for the control of viral disease before the transmission season starts in India.
  • It is an initiative by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Dengue is a viral disease that is caused by Dengue Virus (DENV, 1-4 serotypes).

 

9) Sindhu Gangadharan appointed to Siemens India’s board

  • Sindhu Gangadharan, Senior Vice President and MD, SAP Labs India, and head of SAP User Enablement, has been appointed to Siemens India board as an independent director.
  • She serves on the board of multiple organisations like US-based Qualtrics, Titan Company Ltd, and EverLoop by SAP.
  • In 2021, she was also re-elected to the Nasscom Executive Council for the second consecutive term.

 

10) Kenyan nurse Anna Qabale Duba crowned World’s Best Nurse

  • Anna Qabale Duba from Marsabit county, Kenya was conferred the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, 2022, in May 2022.
  • She endorsed education and campaigned against outdated cultural practices like female genital mutilation (FGM) in her community.
  • She was selected among an initial 24,000 nominee nurses across the globe and received USD 250,000 as prize money.

 

11) India, Nepal sign 6 MoUs during PM Narendra Modi’s Lumbini visit

  • PM Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba on 16 May 2022 held bilateral talks at Lumbini where-in they signed six MoUs.
  • This included an MoU between Indian Council of Cultural Relations and Lumbini Buddhist University on the establishment of Dr. Ambedkar Chair for Buddhist Studies.
  • An MoU in collaboration between Kathmandu University, Nepal, and IIT Madras was also signed.

12) BTS creates history after 3 wins at Billboard Music Awards 2022

  • At the 2022 Billboards Music Awards, BTS created history by winning 3 out of 6 awards they were nominated for.
  • BTS also known as Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band that was formed in 2010 and debuted in 2013.
  • The Billboard Music Awards honors the artists across genres whose music has received the most fanfare over the past year.
  • The 2022 edition was held on 15 May 2022 in Las Vegas.

 

13) Nidhi Chibber appointed CBSE chief, Vivek Kumar as REC CMD

  • Senior IAS officer Nidhi Chibber has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
  • Chibber, a 1994 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Chhattisgarh cadre, is currently Additional Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries.
  • Vivek Kumar Dewangen, a 1993 batch IAS officer of Manipur cadre, has been named CMD, REC Ltd., Ministry of Power.

 

14) Devasahayam Pillai: 1st Indian layman to be declared saint by Pope

  • Devasahayam Pillai became 1st Indian layman to be declared a saint by Pope Francis on 15 May 2022.
  • He was born as Neelakandan Pillai in a Hindu Upper Caste Family in present-day Kanyakumari and he converted to Christianity in 1745.
  • Devasahayam was recommended for the process of Beatification by the Vatican in 2004, at the request of the Kottar diocese, Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council.

 

15) Somalia elects Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as new President

  • Somali legislators have elected former leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (66) as the country’s next President.
  • He has been elected for the second time, having served as the President between 2012-17.

16) NSE Academy collaborates with HDFC Asset Management Company

  • NSE Academy Ltd (NAL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE) has signed an agreement with HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd (HDFC AMC).
  • It will launch a first-of-its-kind programme, ‘Invest-verse: An Introduction to the World of Investing!
  • The programme will be offered to college students across India.

 

17) Manish Sisodia inaugurates East Delhi’s dedicated EV charging station

  • Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia inaugurated the first residential EV charging station in East Delhi at a society in Mayur Vihar, in May 2022.
  • It has been set up by EV charging infratech company EVRE.
  • This is EVRE’s first EV charging facility in a residential society in East Delhi.
  • Currently, EVRE operates around 700 charging stations in different cities.

 

18) Capgemini acquires Chappuis Halder to boost financial services biz

  • Capgemini has entered into a share purchase agreement to acquire Chappuis Halder & Cie (Chappuis Halder).
  • Chappuis is a global strategy and management consulting firm headquartered in Luxembourg.
  • Capgemini helps clients address their business. needs, from strategy and design to operations, leveraging cloud, data, Al, connectivity, software, digital engineering, and platforms.

 

19) Dr Swati Dhingra appointed as member of the Bank of England

  • Leading UK-based academic Dr Swati Dhingra has been named as the first Indian-origin woman to be appointed as an external member of the Bank of England’s interest rate-setting committee.
  • She will join the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) on August 9, 2022, for a three-year term.
  • Dhingra is an Associate Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics (LSE).

 

20) Rajasthan’s Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary notified as tiger reserve

  • The Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary in Rajasthan was notified as India’s 52nd tiger reserve on May 16, 2022.
  • This is Rajasthan’s fourth tiger reserve after Ranthambore, Sariska and Mukundra.
  • According to “Status of Tigers in India” report released in 2019, there are 2,967 tigers in 20 states across the country.
