DAILY DOSE 17TH JUNE CURRENT AFFAIRS
1) International Day of Family Remittances: 16 June
- International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) is observed every year on June 16.
- The day observes the efforts of the migrant workers who help to improve the living standards of their families by sending money back home.
- The theme for 2022 is ‘Recovery and resilience through digital and financial inclusion.
- The day was first observed in 2015.
2) India’s first road constructed from steel slag inaugurated in Surat
- Surat in Gujarat has become the first city in the country to get a processed steel slag (industrial waste) road.
- The first 6-lane highway made by using Steel Slag was inaugurated in Surat by Union Steel Minister Ram Chandra Prasad Singh on 15 June 2022.
- The road has been jointly made by the Central Road Research Institute & ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India.
3) US central bank announces its biggest interest rate rise
- US central bank has announced its biggest interest rate rise to rein in surging inflation.
- The Federal Reserve would increase its benchmark rate by three-quarters of a percentage point to a range of 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent.
- The rise comes after inflation surged unexpectedly in May’22.
- It is the largest rate hike since 1994 and will affect millions of American businesses and households.
4) Indian Naval Ships Sahyadri, Kamorta on 3-day visit to Indonesia
- As part of their deployment to South East Asia, Indian Naval Ships Sahyadri and Kamorta, are on a three-day visit to Jakarta from 15 Jun’22.
- INS Sahyadri is an indigenously built multi-role stealth Frigate and INS Kamorta is an indigenously built ASW Corvette.
- Frigates and Corvettes are escort ships and Frigates are larger than Corvettes and have a mix of offensive and defence capabilities.
5) Al enabled Common Single Pension Portal to be launched
- Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has informed that the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare will launch Al-enabled Common Single Pension Portal.
- It will also help in seamless processing, tracking, and disbursal of pensions.
- It will send automatic alerts to pensioners and superannuated elder citizens to bring complete “Ease of Living” for central government pensioners.
6) World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought: 17 June
- World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year on June 17.
- Its purpose is to raise awareness of the presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought.
- This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on January 30, 1995.
- The theme for 2022 is ‘Rising up from drought together!\
7) Arati Prabhakar to be appointed as Science Adviser to US President
- United States President Joe Biden will nominate Indian-origin physicist Aarti Prabhakar as his scientific advisor.
- She will be named the Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP).
- She will replace Eric Lander.
- She will need Senate approval to become White House Office of Science and Technology Director.

9) Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India Regulations amended
- The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India has amended the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (Grievance and Complaint Handling Procedure) Regulations, 2017 and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (Inspection and Investigation) Regulations, 2017.
- The Amendment Regulations are effective from 14th June 2022.
10) BIS develops Indian Standard for non-electric cooling cabinet of clay
- Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, has developed an Indian Standard for ‘non-electric cooling cabinet made of clay!
- It is named as ‘Mitticool refrigerator!
- Mansukh Bhai Prajapati from Gujarat is the innovator behind the refrigerator.
- This standard helps BIS in fulfilling 6 out of 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
11) 12th meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors held on 15 June 2022
- The 12th meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors (NSA) was held on 15 June 2022.
- Yang Jiechi, a member of the political bureau of the CPC Central Committee chaired the meeting in Beijing.
- It was attended by the NSAs of Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa.
- Meeting of BRICS NSAS is an important platform for BRICS countries to enhance political and security cooperation.
12) Additional central assistance approved for two states
- The High-Level Committee (HLC) under the Chairmanship of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has approved additional Central assistance under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to two states.
- Rajasthan and Nagaland were affected by drought during 2021-22.
- Rs 1,003.95 crore have been approved for Rajasthan, while Rs 39.28 crore have been approved for Nagaland.
13) World Sea Turtle Day: 16 June
- World Sea Turtle Day is observed every year on June 16,
- This day is celebrated to save this aquatic species from extinction.
- Sea turtles in India are protected by the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
- The Act bans the consumption of turtle meat and eggs by all except for indigenous tribal communities, including the Onges and Shompen, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
14) Kerala ranks 1st in Asia in Affordable Talent in GSER 2022
- Kerala has been ranked first in Asia in Affordable Talent in Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) 2022.
- It has been ranked fourth in global ranking in the GSER ’22.
- The report has been drawn up jointly by policy advisory and research organisation Startup Genome and Global Entrepreneurship Network.
- In the first GSER published in 2020, Kerala was ranked 5th in Asia and 20th in the world.
15) Renowned critic and linguist Professor Gopi Chand Narang passes away
- One of the most respected Urdu critics and linguists Professor Gopi Chand Narang passed away in June 2022.
- A recipient of Padma Bhushan and Sahitya Akademi Awards, Prof. Narang published more. than 65 scholarly and critical books on language, literature, poetics and cultural studies in Urdu, Hindi and English.
- He was Professor Emeritus at the University of Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia.
16) First-ever SAI Squash Courts inaugurated at Major Dhyanchand Stadium
- External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur on 15 June ’22 inaugurated the Squash Courts at the Major Dhyanchand Stadium in New Delhi.
- These are the first-ever Squash courts opened by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in any centre across the country.
- The foundation stone of the project was laid by former Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju in December ’20.
17) Neeraj Chopra to lead 37-member athletics team in Commonwealth Games
- Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will lead a 37-member Indian athletics team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022.
- The team was announced on 16 June 2022 by The Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
- Out of the 37 members, 18 are women and 19 are men.
- Commonwealth Games 2022 are scheduled to be held in Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022.
18) NPCI signs MoU with Lyra Network for acceptance of UPI in France
- National Payments Corporation Of India (NPCI) International has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lyra Network for acceptance of UPI and RuPay Cards in France.
- It will allow Indians to pay using UPI and Rupay cards at terminals and machines of Lyra Networks in France.
- It will be the first time that UPI will be accepted in any European country.
19) International literary festival ‘Unmesh’ begins in Himachal Pradesh
- Three-day international literary festival ‘Unmesh’ began at the historic Gaiety Theater in Shimla on 16 June 2022.
- It was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Culture Arjun Ram Meghawal.
- It is being organised by the Union Ministry of Culture and the Sahitya Akademi.
- It is the biggest international literary festival in the country so far and is being organized for the first time.
20) Nitin Gadkari inaugurates Industrial Decarbonization Summit 2022
- Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated ‘Industrial Decarbonization Summit 2022’ in New Delhi on 16 June 2022.
- The Summit will focus on a variety of research topics related to decarbonization, Climate Change including their management, Policy issues and Sustainability etc.
