1) Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launches “Geospatial Hackathon”

  • Union Minister of State Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh on 14 Jan 2023 launched “Geospatial Hackathon” to promote Innovation and Start-Ups in India’s Geospatial ecosystem.
  • It will foster partnerships between the public and private geospatial sectors.
  • The “Geospatial Hackathon” will end on March 10, 2023 and will have two sets of challenges – Research Challenge and Startup Challenge.

 

2) Miss USA R’Bonney Gabriel crowned the new Miss Universe

  • R’Bonney Gabriel was named the winner of the 71st annual Miss Universe pageant on 15 January 2023.
  • In second place was Miss Venezuela Amanda Dudamel, followed by Miss Dominican Republic Andreína Martínez.
  • She is also the first Filipina American to win Miss USA.
  • This year’s Miss Universe pageant allowed married women and mothers to compete for the first time in its 70-year history.

 

3) 75th Army Day celebration held in Bengaluru, Karnataka

  • India celebrated the 75th Army Day on 15 January 2023 to honor the defense forces and the first Chief of the Indian Army, General K.M. Cariappa.
  • On this day, General K.M. Cariappa took over the command of the Indian Army from General Sir FRR Bucher, the last British. Commander-in-Chief in 1949.
  • A parade was held in Bengaluru, making it 1st time that the Army Day parade was held outside Delhi.

5) World Economic Forum 2023 Summit to begin on January 16

  • The 53rd edition of the annual World Economic Forum Summit would be held in Davos, Switzerland from January 16 to 20, 2203.
  • A delegation of Indian Ministers Union ministers including Ashwini Vaishnaw, Mansukh Mandaviya, Smriti Irani, and RK Singh would be present during the event.
  • The theme of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2023 meeting is ‘Cooperation in a fragmented world.’

  • It is an international non-governmental and lobbying organisation.
  • It was founded on 24 January 1971 by German engineer and economist Klaus Schwab.
  • First named the European Management Forum, it changed its name to the World Economic Forum in 1987.

7) G20’s first Infrastructure Working Group meeting to be held in Pune

  • The first-ever Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) meeting of the G20 Group under India’s G-20 presidency will be held in Pune, Maharashtra on January 16-17, 2023.
  • The meeting is being hosted by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.
  • Australia and Brazil are joining as co-chairs.
  • The theme of the Indian G-20 presidency of 2023 is, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’
