1) Parsi New Year or Navroz: 16 August 2023

  • Navroz is a festival that marks the beginning of spring and the renewal of nature.
  • The Parsis celebrate Navroz to commemorate their New Year which typically falls around March 21.
  • Navroz arrives 200 days later in India and is celebrated in August as the Parsis here follow the Shahenshahi calendar that doesn’t account for leap years.
  • In 2023, It will be observed in India on 16 Aug.

 

2) India to become 3rd largest economy by 2027: SBI chief economist

  • India is likely to become the third largest economy by 2027, as per the Group Chief Economic Advisor, Soumya Kanti Ghosh, at State Bank of India.
  • Indian economy is currently ranked fifth, behind the US, China, Japan, and Germany.
  • In 2014, India was the 10th largest economy, and in 2022 it became the fifth-largest economy overtaking the United Kingdom.

 

3) Woakes named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2023

  • England all-rounder Chris Woakes was named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2023 on 15 August 2023.
  • The Englishman beat compatriot Zak Crawley and Netherlands’ Bas de Leede to claim the honour.
  • He bagged the Player-of-the-Match at the Oval and was also named the Player-of-the-Series for his 19 wickets in three matches at an average of 18.15.

 

4) Centre renames Nehru Memorial as Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library

  • The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) has been renamed the Prime Ministers’ Museum & Library Society.
  • The decision to change the name was taken during a meeting of the NMML Society in June 2023.
  • The Culture Ministry decided to change the name to PM’s Museum and Library Society.
  • The decision was presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is the Vice-President of the Society.

 

5) Former Indian Football Captain Mohammed Habib passes away

  • Former India captain and legendary footballer Mohammed Habib passed away in Hyderabad on 15 August.
  • Habib represented India for a decade from 1965-75 and was part of the team that won a bronze medal in the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok.
  • He represented the country in 35 international matches and scored 11 goals.
  • Habib won the Santosh Trophy on five occasions.

 

6) Ashleigh Gardner becomes 1st Australian to win consecutive ICC awards

  • Ashleigh Gardner has become the first-ever Australian cricketer to win the ICC Player of the Month award in consecutive months.
  • Gardner won the ICC POTM award for July 2023 with her exceptional performances.
  • Gardner beat fellow all-rounders Ellyse Perry and Nat Sciver-Brunt to the title.
  • This marked the fourth time Gardner has won the coveted monthly award.

 

7) UP CM Yogi inaugurates drive to plant 5 crore saplings

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a drive to plant 5 crore saplings under Tree Plantation Campaign-2023 and Amrit Stambh in Amrit Vatika on Gomti bank.
  • The state govt has also approved the UP Water Tourism and Adventure Sports Policy 2023 for 10 years.
  • The policy will be applicable to all inland land-based, air-based and all adventure activities carried out in UP.

 

8) Ministry of Youth Affairs to organize Youth 20 Summit from 17 August

  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organizing Youth 20 Summit-2023 from the 17th to the 20th of this month in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • More than 100 delegates from G20 countries, Guest countries and International Organizations will discuss five identified themes of Y20.
  • These themes include Future of Work: Industry 4.0, Innovation and 21st Century Skill.

 

9) India’s overall exports decreases 5% on year in July 2023

  • India’s overall exports and imports in July 2023 have both contracted compared to July 2022, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • India’s overall exports in April-July 2023-24 period are estimated to exhibit a negative growth of 5.98 % over April-July 2022.
  • Overall imports in April-July 2023 are estimated to exhibit a negative growth of 11.09% over April-July 2022.

 

10) Sulabh International founder Bindeshwar Pathak passes away

  • Renowned social activist and founder of Sulabh International, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak passed away on 15 August 2023.
  • Sulabh International is an India-based organization that promotes human rights and environmental sanitation.
  • He was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 1991.
  • In 2009, he received the Stockholm Water Prize.
  • He was also awarded the Nikkei Asia Prize, 2018 for Culture and Community.

 

11) English pacer Steven Finn retires from all forms of cricket

  • England pacer Steven Finn officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on 15 August 2023.
  • Finn has had a decent career with England, having featured in 36 Tests, 69 One-Day Internationals and 21 T20 Internationals.
  • Making his debut in 2010, he grabbed 14 wickets during the 2010-11 Ashes, which his side famously won 3-1 in Australia
