1) Sex education to be compulsory in schools in Republic of Ireland
- Lessons in relationships and sex education (RSE) are to be compulsory for 15 to 18 year olds at schools in the Republic of Ireland.
2) Govt launches ‘Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojan’ to empower the Elderly
- Union govt has launched ‘Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY)’ for empowering marginalized sections of society.
- The AVYAY is a comprehensive initiative aimed at empowering senior citizens in India.
- The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment is implementing various programs & schemes for senior citizens, including the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens (NAPSrc).
3) Jyothi wins India’s first gold at Asian Athletics Championships 2023
- Jyothi Yarraji won the gold medal in the 100m hurdles event at the Asian Athletics Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, becoming the first Indian to do so.
- Yarraji clocked a time of 13.09s in the final to win the gold.
- With this victory, Yarraji has now qualified for the World Championships.
- She was also the only Indian woman in history to clock a time below 13 seconds in this event.
4) RBI cancels registration of four non-banking finance companies (NBFC)
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has canceled the registration of four non-banking finance companies (NBFC).
- 2 NBFCs from Telangana, 1 from Kerala, and 1 from Uttar Pradesh have lost their certification of registration.
- Nanma Chits & Financiers Ltd, Kailash Auto Finance Ltd, Chidrupi Financial Services Ltd, & Goldline Financial Services Ltd are the NBFCs whose registration has been canceled.

- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central banking institution of India and is responsible for the monetary policy, regulation of the banking sector, and the issuance and management of the Indian rupee currency.
- It was established on April 1, 1935, in accordance with the RBI Act, of 1934.

6) Google Pay launches UPI Lite to boost small value transactions
- Google Pay has added support for UPI Lite payment that enables small payments without using a pin.
- UPI Lite technology ensures faster payments during peak hours.
- Google Pay allows users to create a UPI Lite wallet within the same app and load up to Rs 2,000.
- UPI Lite payment was first announced by RBI in Sept 2022 and is compatible with over 15 major public sector and private banks.

8) India to resume operations at stalled hydrocarbon block in Iraq
- India has announced to resume operations of ONGC Videsh Ltd’s (OVL) hydrocarbon exploration block in Iraq.
- The exploration block in the Western Desert of Iraq, spread over 10,500 sq km, was acquired by OVL in November 2000.
- India is planning to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Iraq.
- In FY23, Iraq was the second largest exporter of crude oil to India.
9) Assam CM inaugurates ‘Griha Pravesh’ ceremony for 3.06 lakh households
- Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the ‘Griha Pravesh’ ceremony for 3.06 lakh beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G).
- The Assam Panchayat and Rural Development department organized the mass Griha Pravesh ceremony for more than 3 lakh PMAY-G beneficiaries.
- The govt is likely to perform Griha Pravesh for another 6 lakh families by 15 Feb 2024.
10) Bank of Israel joins the International Committee on Credit Reporting
- The Bank of Israel joined the International Committee on Credit Reporting (ICCR) on 13 July 2023.
- In November 2022, the Bank of Israel was approved as a member of the ICCR by a unanimous vote.
- The World Bank took internal steps to approve the Bank of Israel’s membership following the ICCR’s spring session in June 2023.
- The ICCR includes representatives of central banks around the world.
11) Assam unveils Gajah Kotha campaign to reduce human-elephant conflict
- Assam launched the Gajah Kotha campaign to mitigate human-elephant conflict (HEC) in eastern Assam.
- The initiative educates HEC-affected villages about elephants’ behavior and ecology.
- The campaign created awareness through exhibitions and awareness materials.
- Over 1,200 HEC-affected people in eastern Assam have been reached through 24 Gajah Kotha campaigns so far.
12) Pakistan’s Karachi ranked among ‘least livable cities’ in world
- Karachi is ranked among the top five ‘least livable’ urban centers in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
- Karachi is ranked 169th out of a total of 173 cities on the EIU’s Global Livability Index 2023.
- Karachi has an overall score of 42.5, which is lower than ideal.
- It performed most poorly on the stability indicator, with a score of 20, similar to 2022.
13) India to open new consulate in Marseille in France
- India is opening a new consulate in Marseille, France, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who made the announcement while addressing the Indian community in Paris.
- PM Modi also said that a statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar will be installed in France and that it is an honor for India.
- India and France have agreed to use Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payment mechanism.
14) PM Narendra Modi conferred with France’s highest award
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, the highest honour in France, from French President Emmanuel Macron.
- Modi arrived in Paris for a two-day visit and is attending the French National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
- Modi addressed the Indian diaspora in France and announced an agreement for the use of UPI in France.
15) EIB to provide EUR 1 billion for India’s Green Hydrogen Mission
- The European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide a loan of up to €1 billion to support India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- The loan will assist India’s green hydrogen ecosystem and renewable energy projects.
- The loan will back renewable energy generation, enabling technologies and infrastructure for energy storage, power transmission and distribution.
16) Sebi to set up a panel to suggest changes to SCRA
- The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is planning to form an expert committee to suggest changes to the Securities Contract Regulation Act (SCRA).
- SCRA is a key legislation under which SEBI derives various operational powers.
- It will simplify the law and weed out redundant provisions, including SEBI’s penalty powers and the regulatory framework for market institutions.
- The move is planned as part of changes to the social, personal and health education (SPHE) for senior pupils.
- Adults will be taught nurturing, respectful, caring, and healthy relationships under sexuality and relationship lessons.
