1) Satwik Sairaj & Chirag Shetty nominated for Khel Ratna Award

  • Men’s doubles badminton pair of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have been selected for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
  • TheMajor Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, is the highest sporting honour of India.
  • It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
  • The badminton pair has been ranked as the number 1 pair in the BWF World Ranking.

 

2) Hyderabad among India’s best cities: Mercer’s quality of living index

  • Hyderabad at 153, Pune at 154 and Bengaluru in the 156th position are the three highest placed among Indian cities in Mercer’s worldwide quality of living rankingfor 2023.
  • it has rated Viennain Austria at the top of the list.
  • Chennai is the fourth Indian city in the list at the 161 spot followed by Mumbai at 164.
  • Kolkata and New Delhi ranked 170 and 172 respectively.

 

3) National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India:

  • The national survey showed prevalence of psychoactive substance use among Indians, highest in alcohol (1.3% children, 17.1% adults).
  • Other substances include cannabis, opioids, sedatives common among varied age groups.
  • Inhalants, cocaine, hallucinogens have lower prevalence, yet have a lot of users.
  • Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan reached 10.72cr people, raising awareness about substance abuse.

  • Scientists developed AKTOCYTE tablets to minimize radiotherapy side effects and boost cancer treatment efficacy.
  • Demonstrated remarkable recovery in pelvic cancer patients, preventing surgical intervention.
  • Received approval from FSSAI, ensuring its quality & efficacy.
  • Expected to hit the market in January 2024, adding value to cancer treatments.

 

6) Over 30% dengue seroprevalence among Kerala’s children: Lancet study

  • A study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia journalhas found a dengue seroprevalence of 30.9 per cent among children aged 9–12 and 24.6 per cent in 5–8-year-olds in Kerala.
  • The study unveiled a nuanced landscape of dengue prevalence among children aged 5–12, shedding light on the complex dynamics of the mosquito-borne viral disease.

 

7) A statue of Thiruvalluvar unveiled in French town of Cergy

  • A statue of Thiruvalluvar, regarded a cultural icon by Tamils, was inaugurated in the French town of Cergy.
  • Thiruvalluvar was an Indian poet and philosopher.
  • He is best known as the author of the Tirukkuṟaḷ, a collection of couplets on ethics, political and economic matters, and love.
  • The text is considered an exceptional and widely cherished work of Tamil literature.

 

8) Fast Attack Craft INS Tarmugli commissioned at Naval Dockyard, Vizag

  • Indian Navy has inducted Fast Attack Craft, INS Tarmugliin a commissioning ceremony at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
  • The ship has a unique distinction of having served under the flag of two nations – India and Maldives with three names.
  • It was first commissioned in Indian Navy; next, it was handed over to Maldives National Defence Force. Now it has been returned back to Indian Navy.

 

9) ‘Mission Antarctica’ carried out by Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

  • Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Ajay Bhatt flagged-in a team of Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeelingthat carried out ‘Mission Antarctica’.
  • The team hoisted the National Flag, measuring 7,500 sq ft across the length and breadth of the country, including atop Mt Rhenock in Sikkim Himalayas.
  • The team also displayed the Tri-colour over Mount Vinson Peak, the highest peak of South Pole.

 

10) Gaddam Prasad Kumar elected as new Telangana Speaker

  • Legislator Gaddam Prasad Kumar was elected unanimously as Speaker of the Telangana Assembly.
  • Pro-tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi announced the elcetion decision in the Telengana Legislative Assembly.
  • He represents Vikarabad in the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
  • He is a former Member of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
  • He belongs to Indian National Congress.

 

11) Indigenous Climate Forecasting System developed at IITM Pune

  • The Earth System Model,known as the IITM-ESM has been indigenously developed at Centre for Climate Change ResearchIndian Institute of Tropical Meteorology under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • This is the first Earth System Model from India and the climate change assessment carried out using IITM-ESM, was used in the latest Sixth Assessment Report prepared by the IPCC.

 

12) INS Kadmatt arrived Manila, Philippines for long range op deployment

  • The visit is aimed at bolstering maritime cooperation between India and Philippines.
  • INS Kadmattis an indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette, equipped with state-of-the-art anti submarine weapon suite.
  • The ship on its return will take part in the Maritime Partnership Exercise, scheduled in the South China Sea between the Indian Navy and Philippines Navy.

 

13) Australia prepares for Cyclone Jasper

  • The northeastern Australian cities of Cairns and Port Douglas readied for the arrival of tropical cyclone Jasper.
  • The cyclone is expected to bring “destructive” winds and flash flooding.
  • The Category Two storm has been slowly churning across the Coral Sea.
  • Meteorologists predicted winds of 140 kilometres per hour, heavy rain and possible storm tides in the cities.
