1) World Sanskrit Day: 12 August 2022

  • World Sanskrit Day is celebrated on Sawan Poornima of the Hindu calendar.
  • For 2022, it was observed on August 12.
  • It was first celebrated in 1969.
  • Sanskrit is one of the most ancient languages.
  • The Indo-Aryan language was first derived 3500 years ago.
  • The scriptures mark their origin in the second millennium BCE when the Rig Veda was composed.

 

2) Index of Industrial Production eases to 12.3% in June 2022

  • The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) eased to 12.3% in June against 19.6% in May 2022.
  • According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data, the growth in IIP data was led by the manufacturing and electricity sectors.
  • The electricity sector rose 16.4%.
  • IIP growth in June 2021 was 13.8%,
  • IIP is an index that details the growth of various sectors in the economy.

 

3) Online film Festival ‘Azadi Ke Rang’ being organised from 13 August

  • Films Division is organizing a 3-day online film Festival “Azadi Ke Rang” from 13-15 August 2022 on its website and YouTube channel.
  • A total 11 films presenting major milestones of our freedom struggle and freedom fighters will mark the occasion.
  • Films Division will also release a special commemorative DVD Set of 18 unique films on freedom struggle and important historic moments on 15 Aug.

 

4) Tamil Nadu to establish fifth elephant reserve at Agasthiyamalai

  • On the occasion of World Elephant Day, the centre announced the establishment of another elephant reserve at Agasthiyamalai.
  • This reserve will be the 32nd elephant reserve in the country and the fifth in Tamil Nadu.
  • It will encompass reserve forests and patta lands in Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts.

 

5) Dr Jitendra Singh unveils India’s first saline water lantern ‘Roshni’

  • Union Minister of State Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh has launched India’s first saline water lantern “Roshni”.
  • It uses the sea water as the electrolyte between specially designed electrodes to power the LED lamps.
  • This technology can also be used in hinterlands, where sea water is not available.
  • NIOT (National Institute of Ocean Technology) team has invented the Roshini Lamp.

 

6) WHO announces new names for Monkeypox virus

  • World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced new names for variants of the Monkeypox virus.
  • WHO has named the variants as– Clades I, lla and llb.
  • It had declared a global health emergency over monkeypox in July 2022.
  • Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus.
  • Its symptoms include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion, etc.

 

7) Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill, 2022 passed

  • The Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill, 2022, was passed in August 2022.
  • It forbids “mass conversion” and increases the maximum punishment to 10 years imprisonment in its 2019 law against any change of religion through force or allurement.
  • The bill seeks to amend sections 2,4,7 and 13 and insert section 8A in the 2019 Act.

 

8) IMD, Japan and UNDP join to expedite climate action in 10 States, UTS

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Japanese government, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have joined hands.
  • They have unveiled a new project to expedite climate action in ten Indian states and union territories.
  • It will be implemented in Bihar, Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.

 

9) CCI approves acquisition of Ambuja Cements, ACC by Adani Group

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has given its approval for the acquisition of Holcim’s stake in Ambuja Ltd and ACC Ltd by the Adani Group.
  • The proposed combination involves acquisition of 100 per cent stake in Holderind Investments Ltd by Endeavour Trade and Investment Ltd.
  • Holderind owned 63.11% stake in Ambuja Cements and 4.48% stake in ACC, and Ambuja held 50.05% stake in ACC.

 

10) Airtel to re-appoint Gopal Vittal as Managing Director for 5 years

  • Bharti Airtel’s shareholders have approved the re-appointment of Gopal Vittal as MD of the company for a period of five years with effect from February 1, 2023.
  • Vittal was re-appointed as the MD-CEO with effect from February 1, 2018 for a period of 5 years, (upto January 31, 2023).
  • His re-appointment was due for another term of five years (that is from February 1, 2023 to January 31, 2028).

 

11) Retail inflation falls to 5-month low of 6.71% in July 2022

  • India’s retail inflation fell to 6.71 per cent in July 2022, the lowest level in five months, as per the National Statistical Office (NSO) data released on 12 August 2022.
  • The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation stood at 7.01 per cent in June.
  • Retail inflation for rural areas declined to 6.80 per cent in July 2022 from 7.09 per cent in June.
