1) FIH withdraws Olympic qualifiers hosting rights from Pakistan
- The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Tuesday withdrew hosting rights of the Olympic Qualifiers from Pakistan, slated to be held in January 2024.
- Pakistan last hosted an FIH event in 2004.
- With the event withdrawn, however, Pakistan, currently ranked 15th in the world, will have to win the Asian Games.
- Pakistan failed to qualify for the last two editions.
2) August retail inflation eases to 6.83 per cent
- India’s retail inflation rate eased to 6.83 per cent in August 2023 due to lower prices of edible oil and a slight dip in vegetable inflation.
- The combined food price index eased to 9.94% in August from 11.51% in July.
- Retail inflation remained above the central bank’s target range of 2-6%.
- Cereal prices rose 11.6% in August, while milk and milk products inflation stood at 7.7%.
3) India-Saudi Arabia Invest Forum meets in New Delhi
- India and Saudi Arabia held their first formal investment symposium in New Delhi.
- The symposium discussed ways to expand bilateral collaboration in various domains.
- More than 45 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were concluded between the two sides.
- These MoUs are expected to deepen economic engagement and accelerate investment flows between India and Saudi Arabia.
4) NASA’s James Webb Telescope detects possible signs of life on K2-18b
- The James Webb Space Telescope may have found evidence of life on exoplanet K2-18b.
- Scientists have detected dimethyl sulphide (DMS) on K2-18b, a molecule only produced by life.
- Methane and carbon dioxide have also been detected in the planet’s atmosphere, raising the possibility of a water ocean on K2-18b.
- K2-18b is located 120 light years away.
5) Rohit becomes the second-fastest batter to 10,000 ODI runs
- India captain Rohit Sharma on September 12 became the sixth batter from his country and 15th overall to complete 10,000 ODI runs.
- Rohit achieved the feat during India’s Asia Cup Super 4 contest against Sri Lanka.
- Rohit also holds the record for the highest individual score in ODIs with 264 runs against Sri Lanka.
- He has scored 28 hundreds while opening, second only to Sachin Tendulkar’s 45.
6) DBS Bank unveils metaverse adventure on ‘DBS BetterWorld’
- DBS Bank has launched ‘DBS BetterWorld’, a gamified adventure to showcase how the metaverse can be utilized for doing good.
- The virtual experience highlights the issue of global food waste.
- DBS launched its Towards Zero Food Waste initiative in 2020 to create a more food-resilient future.
- The initiative has generated over 2,000 tonnes of total food impact.
7) RBI issues revised norms for valuation of investment by banks
- The RBI has issued revised norms for the classification, valuation, & operation of investment portfolios of commercial banks.
- The new directions include principle-based classification of investment portfolios.
- Banks will have to classify their entire investment portfolio under three categories: Held to Maturity (HTM), Available for Sale (AFS), and Fair Value through Profit and Loss (FVTPL).
8) GQG Partners acquires 5 crore shares of IDFC First Bank via block deal
- GQG Partners has acquired 5.1 crore equity shares of IDFC First Bank’s MD & CEO in a ₹ 479.50-crore block deal transaction.
- Out of the ₹ 478.7 crore sales proceeds, ₹ 229 crore would be paid to IDFC First Bank to subscribe to new shares of the bank.
- Vaidyanathan’s shareholding in IDFC FIRST Bank will increase from 0.58% as of June 30, 2023, to 1.04%.
9) IICA, NICEF held workshop on Business Responsibility Reporting
- The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) recently organized a workshop on Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) in collaboration with UNICEF and National Stock Exchange (NSE).
- The workshop aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the BRSR framework.
- BRSR is based on the nine principles of the National Guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC).
10) Ministry of Labour and Employment signs MoUs with private job firms
- The Ministry of Labour and Employment has signed MoUs with leading private job portals, companies/employers and skill providers to integrate with the National Career Service (NCS) portal.
- The objective of MoUs is to enhance employment opportunities and services for job seekers on the NCS portal.
- Private job portals partnering with the Ministry will share their vacancies on NCS.
11) Vijayawada Railway Station gets ‘Green Railway Certification’
- Vijayawada Railway Station was awarded the Platinum certification for being a Green Railway Station.
- The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) developed the Green Railway Stations rating system to promote the adoption of green concepts in railway stations.
- The rating system evaluates railway stations based on six environmental categories.
12) US city, Louisville declares September 3 as Sanatana Dharma Day
- The mayor of Louisville, Kentucky has declared September 3 as Sanatana Dharma Day, honoring the Hindu community in the city.
- Spiritual leaders including Chidanand Saraswati, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and Bhagawati Saraswati, along with dignitaries, participated in the event.
- Sanatana Dharma Day aims to promote awareness and understanding of Hinduism in Louisville.
13) UK scientist Ian Wilmut, creator of ‘Dolly’ Sheep clone passes away
- Ian Wilmut, the British scientist who helped create Dolly the Sheep has passed away.
- Wilmut and his team in 1996 created Dolly, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell.
- Dolly was named after country singer Dolly Parton and was created using somatic cell nuclear transfer.
- Wilmut’s research led to the births of Megan and Morag in 1995 and Dolly in 1996.
14) Germany beat Serbia to win first-ever FIBA basketball World Cup
- Germany won their first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup title by beating Serbia 83-77 in the final.
- Germany is the first team to win a FIBA World Cup crown in their final debut since Spain in 2006.
- Germany’s previous best showing at the men’s World Cup was in 2002 when MVP Dirk Nowitzki led them to the bronze medal.
15) India’s Diplomatic Coup:
- PM Narendra Modi, recognizing the G20 Summit as a diplomatic milestone for India, used the platform to amplify Global South concerns.
- He secured support for a Leaders’ Declaration on Ukraine conflict without assigning blame.
- Modi advocated for the reform of global institutions like the UNSC, gaining backing from the US.
- This success is significant as India faces upcoming general elections.

17) President to launch Ayushman Bhav Campaign on September 13
- The President of India will inaugurate the ‘Ayushman Bhav’ campaign, a nationwide healthcare initiative on 13 September 2023.
- The campaign will be implemented during the ‘Seva Pakhwada’ from September 17th to October 2nd, 2023.
- The campaign has three components: Ayushman – Apke Dwar 3.0, Ayushman Melas and Community Health Centres (CHCs), and Ayushman Sabhas in every village and panchayat.
