1) IAF to participate in bilateral exercise hosted by Malaysia

  • A contingent of the Indian Air Force (IAF) left for Malaysia on 12 August 2022 to participate in a bilateral exercise named ‘Udarashakti!
  • This is the first bilateral exercise being conducted between Indian Air Force and Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
  • IAF is participating in the exercise with Su-30 MKI and C-17 aircraft while the RMAF will be flying Su 30 MKM aircraft.

 

2) India ranks seventh in digital currency ownership: UN report

  • According to a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), around 7.3% of Indians owned some form of digital currency in 2021.
  • It also states that 15 of the top 20 nations in terms of digital currency ownership were developing countries, with India ranking 7th, one position behind US.
  • Ukraine topped the list, with 12.7% of its population holding crypto assets.

 

3) Shashi Tharoor receives France’s highest civilian honour

  • The French government on 11 August 2022 bestowed Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP, the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur (the Legion of Honour), its highest civilian honour.
  • The award has been conferred upon Tharoor in recognition of his writings and speeches.
  • This award was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • It is awarded for excellent civil or military conduct.

 

4) Know About: Supreme Court

  • The Federal Court of India was created as per the Government of India Act 1935.
  • It converted into Supreme Court in 1950.
  • Justice Harilal Jekisundas Kania was the first (Indian) Chief Justice of India.
  • Supreme Court Composition: Including the CJI, there are 34 judges in the Supreme Court.
  • First Female Judge: Fathima Beevi
  • Current CJI: N. V. Ramana (48th)

 

5) Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation awarded

  • The “Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation” for the year 2022 have been awarded to 151 Police personnel.
  • Among the personnel, 15 are from CBI, 11 are from Maharashtra Police, 10 each are from MP and UP Police, 8 each are from Kerala Police, Rajasthan Police and West Bengal Police.
  • These awardees also include 28 women police officers.

 

6) Social Justice Ministry launches ‘SMILE-75’ initiative

  • The Social Justice & Empowerment Ministry on 12 August 2022 launched the ‘SMILE-75’ initiative.
  • It has been launched for comprehensive rehabilitation of persons engaged in begging in 75 identified municipalities as a part of the celebrations of 75 years of Independence.
  • It is a part of the Ministry’s ongoing SMILE project (Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise).

 

7) World Elephant Day: 12 August

  • World Elephant Day is observed on August 12 every year.
  • The day was first observed on August 12, 2012.
  • World Elephant Day was co-founded by Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand, an initiative of HM Queen Sirikit.
  • Since 2012, the day is marked with an aim to reach out to people and educate them on the plight of elephants.

 

8) World Organ Donation Day: 13 August

  • World Organ Donation Day is observed every year on August 13 across the globe.
  • The purpose of observing this day is to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation and to encourage people to do the same.
  • The first-ever successful living donor organ transplant was carried out in 1954 in the US.
  • India has its own organ donation day that is observed on November 27 each year.

 

9) Ayush Ministry & MeitY sign MoU for digitalisation of Ayush Sector

  • Ministry of Ayush has signed an MoU with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for the digitalisation of the Ayush Sector under the Ayush Grid project.
  • Under this MOU, MeitY will extend all technical support required for the Ayush Grid project including the adoption of emerging technologies.

10) First Khelo India Women’s Hockey League U-16 to be held from 16 Aug

  • 1st Khelo India Women’s Hockey League under-16 will be held at the Major Dhyanchand Stadium in New Delhi from 16-23 August 2022.
  • A total of 16 teams from across the country are participating.
  • 56 matches will be played and over 300 players will compete in Phase 1 of the league.
  • The Sports Authority of India has allocated Rs 53.72 lakh for 3 phases, which includes prize money of Rs 15.5 lakh.

 

11) ISRO launches 3D virtual space park ‘SPARK’

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched a 3D virtual space tech park called SPARK.
  • The platform hosts several documents, images, and videos related to ISRO launch vehicles, satellites, and scientific missions.
  • SPARK can be accessed through the official website of ISRO or at: https:// spacepark.isro.gov.in.
  • SPARK also features the ‘Space on Wheels’ initiative taken by ISRO.

 

12) Noted Kannada singer Shivamogga Subbanna passes away

  • Noted Kannada singer Shivamogga Subbanna passed away at the age of 83 on 11 August 2022.
  • Subbanna was the first Kannadiga to win a National Award for playback singing for his song “Kaadu Kudure Odi Banditta” in the film “Kaadu Kudure”
  • He has sung poetries of famous poets such as Kuvempu & Da Ra Bendre, and got several awards and honours.
  • He was also a singer with Akashvani and Doordarshan.
