1) International Youth Day: 12 August

  • International Youth Day is celebrated on 12 August around the globe to focus on the development and protection of youth in society.
  • International Youth Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999.
  • The first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000.
  • The theme for the year 2023 is “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.”

 

2) Qila Aur Kahaniya: Mehrangarh Fort

  • It is located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
  • It at a height of 410 feet above the city.
  • The famous Moti Mahal (pearl palace) is located inside the Mehrangarh Fort.
  • The current head of the Rathore clan and custodian of the fort, Maharaja Gaj Singh II, has preserved the buildings and developed the museum as a record of the lives of his predecessors.

 

3) Railways to establish PM Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras at stations

  • Railways Ministry will establish Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras at railway stations across the country.
  • It aims to make available quality medicines to all at an affordable price.
  • It will enable passengers and visitors at railway stations to easily access Janaushadhi products.
  • These Kendra’s will be set up and operated by Licensees at locations identified by Railway Divisions.

 

4) MP Cabinet approves Rs 6000 for farmers under Kisan Kalyan Yojana

  • The council of ministers in Madhya Pradesh approved the disbursement of Rs 6,000 to eligible farmers under the Chief Minister’s Kisan Kalyan Yojana for the financial year 2023-2024.
  • The disbursement will be in 3 instalments from April 1 to July 31, August 1 to November 30, and December 1 to March 31.
  • The Cabinet also approved the benefit of the 7th pay scale to Gram Panchayat Secretaries.

 

5) Direct tax collections rise 16% to Rs 6.53 lakh cr so far in 2023-24

  • Gross direct tax collection grew 15.73 per cent to Rs 6.53 lakh crore till August 10 in the current fiscal year 2023-24.
  • Net direct tax collection after adjusting refunds stands at Rs 5.84 lakh crore, which is 17.33 per cent higher than the net collections for the corresponding period of last year.
  • Refunds worth Rs. 0.69 lakh crore have also been issued from April 1 to August 10, 2023.

 

6) AIM and ISRO launch National Space Innovation Challenge 2023

  • Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Navars Edutech successfully launched the National Space Innovation Challenge (NSIC) 2023.
  • NSIC 2023 is a national-level campaign to foster innovation and curiosity among school students across India.
  • The challenge is open to students from classes 5 to 12.

 

7) Bharati Pawar inaugurated 4th National Conference of ERMED Consortium

  • Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar inaugurated the National Conference on The Electronic Resources in Medicine (ERMED) Consortium.
  • ERMED consortium provides access to medical e-resources to 74 government institutes in India.
  • The e-resources include eBooks, eJournals, clinical cases, high-resolution images, etc.

 

8) Kharif sowing crosses 979 lakh hectares

  • The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has released the progress of area coverage under kharif crops as on 11th August 2023.
  • The total sown area under the Kharif crop as on 11 August 2023 stood at 979 lakh hectares compared to 929.48 lakh hectares for the corresponding period last year.
  • Rice was sown/transplanted in 333.65 lakh hectares, and pulses in 101.96 lakh hectares.

 

9) Renowned Nuclear physicist Bikash Sinha passes away

  • Renowned nuclear physicist Bikash Sinha passed away on 11 August 2023.
  • He was the recipient of Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhusan in 2010
  • In 1987 he was appointed the director of the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre. He held the concurrent charge as director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics till 2009.
