1) VV Giri’s 127th birth anniversary: 10 August 2023

  • Varahagiri Venkata Giri also known as VV Giri, who served as the fourth President of India, was born on August 10, 1894.
  • He served as the fourth president of India from 1969-74.
  • VV Giri served as the third Vice President of India (1967-1969).
  • He was the first vice president who did not complete his tenure.
  • In 1975, the Government of India conferred the Bharat Ratna on VV Giri.

 

2) Odisha to provide free textbook to students of all Odia medium schools

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed to provide free textbooks to students of private and non-aided Odia medium schools.
  • The initiative will be implemented in the academic year 2024-25 under the 5T initiative of the state government.
  • The move will benefit over 5 lakh students of 3620 schools and cost the state government 9 crore 43 lakh rupees annually.

 

3) Delhi government bans the use of mobile phones in classrooms

  • The Delhi government, on 10 August 2023, banned the use of mobile phones in classrooms so that a more “meaningful learning experience can be maintained”. The government asked parents to ensure that their kids don’t carry mobile phones to school.
  • It is aimed at ensuring that students focus more on their studies and overall development rather than getting distracted by their phones.

 

4) UP CM inaugurates first air service between Lucknow, Varanasi

  • The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, inaugurated the flight service and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and IndiGo Airlines.
  • IndiGo Airlines has launched a flight service between Lucknow and Varanasi.
  • The IndiGo flight service between Lucknow and Varanasi has been started for three days a week, namely Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, for now.

 

5) Srinagar tops ‘Jal Jeevan Survekshan 2023’ rankings

  • Srinagar district has secured the top spot in the ‘Front Runners’ category of the ‘Jal Jeevan Survekshan 2023.’
  • The ‘Jal Jeevan Survekshan 2023’ evaluated districts across India on their water supply and management systems.
  • The Survekshan was conducted from October 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023.
  • Srinagar topped the ranking due to its significant improvement in water supply and management

 

6) Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury suspended from Lok Sabha over ‘Misconduct’

  • Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was suspended from Lok Sabha for “repeated misconduct” pending an investigation by the privileges committee.
  • Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is the leader of the Congress party, which is the largest party in the opposition in Lok Sabha.
  • The matter will be further referred to the Committee of Privileges for further investigation.

 

7) PepsiCo, TSL tie up to launch program on plastic waste management

  • PepsiCo India in partnership with The Social Lab (TSL), on 10 August 2023, announced the expansion of the ‘Tidy Trails’ programme in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The program aims to engage over 500 shops to create awareness of responsible plastic waste management.
  • The Tidy Trails program was e-launched by Ashwani Kumar Choubey, Minister of State, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.

 

8) Union govt notifies Manjusha Deshpande as Bombay HC judge

  • Manjusha Ajay Deshpande has been appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court by the Central government.
  • The notification was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on 10 August 2023.
  • The appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium.
  • The Collegium comprises Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices S K Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna.

 

9) Disney Hotstar to air National Rounds of Fit India Quiz 2022

  • The National rounds of the second edition of the Fit India Quiz will be aired on Disney Hotstar from August 12.
  • A total of 13 episodes will be aired every Saturday and Sunday at 8 am.
  • 72 students from 36 schools clinched top honours in the State round.
  • The quiz is being conducted by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in association with the Sports Authority of India.

 

10) Paradip Port becomes fastest Major Port to handle 50 MMT Cargo in 2023

  • Paradip Port Authority has become the fastest major port to handle 50 million metric tons of Cargo in the financial year 2023-24.
  • The Port of Paradip achieved an important milestone by registering a record cargo flow of 50.16 MMT Cargo on August 8, 2023.
  • The Port also handled a record 942 vessels during this period.
  • The record was achieved in just 129 days.

 

11) Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurates 2nd phase of annual MDA initiative

  • Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the second phase of the annual Nationwide Mass Drug Administration (MDA) initiative for Lymphatic Filariasis.
  • India aims to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis by 2027, three years ahead of the global target.
  • The second phase will cover 81 districts in 9 endemic states.

 

12) Ministry of Culture to organise ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ Bike Rally of MPs

  • A Tiranga Bike Rally with Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers will be organized on 11th August 2023 in New Delhi by the Ministry of Culture.
  • The bike rally will be flagged off by the Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar.
  • The “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign will be celebrated from 13th-15th August 2023 across India to encourage people to hoist flags in their premises.

 

13) 53rd NPG Meeting under PM GatiShakti recommends 6 infra projects

  • The network planning group (NPG) under PM Gati Shakti has recommended six infrastructure projects.
  • The 53rd NPG meeting was held on August 9, 2023.
  • Six projects were evaluated during the meeting, with a total project cost of Rs. 28,875.16 Cr.
  • The proposed projects are expected to improve connectivity to various villages and industrial business hubs and reduce travel time.

 

14) Air India unveils new logo ‘Vista’ under Tata Group

  • Air India Chairperson N Chandrasekaran on August 10 unveiled a new logo of Air India.
  • Air India’s new logo symbol – ‘The Vista’ – is inspired by the peak of the gold window frame, signifying a confident outlook for the future.
  • Air India will launch a new website, mobile app, loyalty program, etc., phase-wise.
  • The airline will also launch an entirely new long-haul fleet by the end of 2026.
