1) World Mental Health Day: 10th October

  • World Mental Health Day is observed every year on 10th October to raise awareness about mental health around the world and to mobilize efforts to support those experiencing mental health issues.
  • It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health.
  • 2022 Theme: ‘Make mental health for all a global priority”

 

2) Pankaj Advani wins gold medal at IBSF World Billiards Championship

  • India’s leading cueist, Pankaj Advani claimed his 25th gold medal by winning the 2022 IBSF World Billiards Championship in Kuala Lumpur on 8th Oct 2022.
  • He outclassed compatriot Sourav Kothari 4-0 in a one-sided final to defend the title for the fifth time in a row.
  • Advani last won a world title over 12 months ago in Qatar where he won the IBSF 6-Red Snooker World Cup.

 

3) India to host UNSC meet on counterterrorism in October

  • India will host diplomats of the UN Security Council (UNSC) along with other member states for a key meeting of the Counter-Terrorism Committee in Mumbai and New Delhi on 28-29 Oct 2022.
  • Focus of the meeting: “Countering the Use of New and Emerging Technologies for Terrorist Purposes”
  • India is currently the Chair of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee for the year 2022.

 

4) Max Verstappen wins the Japanese F1 Grand Prix

  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on 9th Oct 2022 won the Japanese F1 Grand Prix to become world champion for the second successive season.
  • Red Bull’ Sergio Perez & Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc came at the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
  • It was Verstappen’s maiden Japanese GP win.
  • Earlier, Sergio Perez had won the Singapore F1 Grand Prix on 2nd Oct 2022.

 

5) Gujarat’s Modhera declared as India’s first 24×7 solar-powered village

  • PM Modi on 9th Oct 2022 declared Modhera in Gujarat’s Mehsana district as India’s first 24×7 solar-powered village.
  • In the village a ground-mounted solar power plant, and over 1,300 rooftop solar systems have been installed on houses to generate electricity.
  • Both the central and state governments have invested over 80 crore in this project.

 

6) Know About: Territorial Army (India)

  • The Territorial Army (TA) of India is an auxiliary military organisation of part-time volunteers that provides support service to the Indian Army.
  • The first camp of TA was inaugurated by the first Governor-General of independent India, C. Rajagopalachari, on 9th Oct 1949.
  • The TA has two units – departmental unit (PSU & Railway employees) & non-departmental unit (privately employed citizens).

8) Raising Day of Territorial Army: 9th October

  • The 73rd Raising Day of the Territorial Army (TA) was celebrated on 9th Oct 2022.
  • It consists of volunteers who receive limited military training for their services in the event of a national emergency.
  • It has participated in all wars since India’s independence.
  • TA was inaugurated by the first Indian Governor-General, C Rajagopalachari on 9th Oct 1949.

9) Anurag Thakur inaugurates Water Sports Center in Himachal Pradesh

  • Union Minister Anurag Thakur on 9th Oct 2022 inaugurated a Water Sports Center in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh.
  • It will be dedicated to training athletes in water sports like Rowing, Canoeing and Kayaking.
  • The Water Sports Centre, the very first of its kind in Himachal Pradesh, has been jointly initiated by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

 

10) World Post Day: 9th October

  • World Post Day is celebrated on the 9th Oct every year to highlight the importance of postal services in the everyday lives of people.
  • Oct 9 was chosen as the day as this was the date in 1874 when the Union Postal Service (UPU) was started in Switzerland.
  • World Post Day was established by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969.
  • 2022 Theme: ‘Post for Planet!

 

11) Villupaattu exponent Subbu Arumugam passed away

  • Kavignar Subbu Arumugam, who popularised villupaattu, folk art of southern districts, across Tamil Nadu passed away.
  • He was conferred with Padma Shri in 2021.
  • He published 15 books containing Villu Pattu narratives, songs, short stories, and novels such as Veera Pandia Kattabomman.
  • He was also awarded with Awards Bunkamura Les Deux Magots Literature Award.

 

12) Mission Mangalyaan, Part – 1

  • The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called Mangalyaan, was a space probe launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on 5 Nov 2013.
  • This indigenously-built space probe has been in Martian orbit since 2014.
  • It is India’s first interplanetary mission & it made ISRO the fourth space agency to achieve Mars orbit, after Roscosmos (Russia), NASA (US), and the European Space Agency.

 

13) All India Institute of Ayurveda signs MOU with NIAIST Japan

  • The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AILA) and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan have signed an MoU.
  • The MoU will enable both countries to promote research collaboration and building capacities in the field of the Indian Ayurvedic system of traditional medicines.
  • AIST is a reputed and one of the largest public research organizations in Japan.

 

14) Govt approves creation of new Weapon Systems branch in IAF

  • The government has approved the creation of a new Weapon Systems branch in the Indian Air Force.
  • The branch will enhance the war-fighting capability of the Indian Air Force.
  • It would encompass operators in four specialised streams of Surface-to-Surface missiles, Surface-to-Air missiles, Remotely Piloted Aircraft, and Weapon System Operators in twin-multi-crew aircraft.

 

15) Mission Mangalyaan, Part – 2

  • Mangalyaan mission also made India the first Asian nation to reach Martian orbit and the first nation in the world to do so on its maiden attempt.
  • The total cost of the mission was approximately 450 Crore.
  • On 3 October 2022, ISRO declared that Mangalyaan has lost contact with Earth.
  • ISRO plans to develop and launch a follow-up mission called Mars Orbiter Mission 2 in 2024.

 

16) Indian indigenous sport Mallakhamb begins at 36th National Games

  • Indian indigenous sport Mallakhamb began at the 36th National Games on 7 October 2022.
  • Mallakhamba is the display of aerial yoga and wrestling grips with vertical stationary or hanging wooden pole performed by a gymnast.
  • The sport made its debut at the Khelo India University Games earlier this year where Madhya Pradesh bagged 12 medals including 5 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze.

 

17) Know About: All India Institute of Ayurveda

  • The All India Institute of Ayurveda, Delhi is a public Ayurveda medicine and research. institution located in New Delhi, India.
  • It was established in 2015.
  • The proposal for its establishment originated from then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s declaration to establish a National Ayurveda Hospital at the ceremony of Vaidya Ram Narayan Sharma Memorial Award Distribution on 5 May 2000.
