1) NEHHDC and Etsy sign an MoU

  • Etsy has partnered with the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC).
  • It has signed an MoU to support small sellers, weavers, and artisans, by providing them with market access and enablement support.
  • As a part of the MoU, Etsy will work with the NEHHDC to develop enablement programs, specifically designed for artisans from the North East.

 

2) Indian GM Gukesh wins Sunway Formentera Open chess tourney

  • Grandmaster D Gukesh on 8 May 2022 emerged as champion in the 1st Chessable Sunway Formentera Open 2022 chess tournament.
  • It was a hat-trick of titles for him after he had previously won the La Roda tournament and the Menorca Open.
  • He settled for a draw with Armenian GM Haik M Martirosyan in the final round to win the title with 8 points.
  • He has now moved up to no 64 in the world rankings.

 

3) Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa resigns amid worst economic crisis

  • Following anti-government protests, Sri Lankan. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on 9 May 2022.
  • Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since gaining independence from Britain in 1948.
  • Mr Rajapaksa sent his resignation letter to his younger brother and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
  • The President has also declared a state of emergency in the country for the second time.

 

4) Gopal Krishna Gokhale’s birth anniversary: 9 May

  • Gopal Krishna Gokhale was one of the well-known political leaders during India’s fight for independence.
  • In 1889, he became a member of the Indian National Congress.
  • He was also the secretary of the “Reception Committee” of the Poona session.
  • The Hitavada newspaper was founded in 1911 by Gopal Krishna Gokhale in Nagpur.

 

5) International Shooting Sport Federation Junior World Cup starts

  • International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup began on 9 May 2022 at Suhl in Germany.
  • Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary will lead the Indian contingent at the event.
  • National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has shortlisted as many as 51 shooters for the German World Cup, including shooters like Anish Bhanwala, Naamya Kapoor, Vivaan Kapoor, etc.

 

6) Maharana Pratap’s birth anniversary: 9 May

  • 9 May is observed as the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap.
  • He was the most well-known Rajput King of Mewar.
  • The 13th king of Mewar was born in 1540.
  • He fought many battles with the Mughals but the most iconic one was the Battle of Haldighati.
  • He is celebrated as the first native freedom fighter of the nation.

 

7) Manipur’s Poumai Naga area declared ‘Drug Free Zone’

  • Poumai tribe, one of the major Naga tribes living. in Manipur’s hill district, Senapati have declared their villages a no-drugs zone.
  • This has been done in order to help the state government curb the drug menace including illegal poppy cultivation.
  • According to reports, a resolution to this effect and against poppy plantation was made on April 28, 2022, during the Poumai general body meeting.

 

8) BOB launches a digital platform to facilitate NBFC partnerships

  • Bank of Baroda has announced the launch of an end-to-end digital platform to facilitate the co-lending of loans in partnership with NBFCs (Non-Banking Financial Companies).
  • It will provide seamless integration between the bank and multiple NBFC partners to accelerate and simplify the co-lending process.
  • It uses rule-based algorithms for underwriting, enables credit assessment checks, etc.

 

9) HDFC Bank hikes MCLR across all tenors

  • HDFC Bank has increased its marginal-cost-based lending rate (MCLR).
  • With effect from May 7, 2022, HDFC Bank has increased its MCLR by 25 basis points (bps) on all tenors of loans.
  • This will raise the cost of housing, vehicle, personnel, and other loans.
  • Any change in the repo rate will change the marginal cost, and thus the MCLR

10) Carlos Alcaraz beat Alexander Zverev to win Madrid Open

  • Carlos Alcaraz clinched the Madrid Open title, beating defending champion Alexander Zverev on 8 May 2022.
  • He defeated him by 6-3, 6-1 in 62 minutes in the men’s singles final.
  • It is his second Masters 1000 crown after Miami last month and his fourth title of the year.
  • Earlier, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur clinched women’s singles title to become the first African player to win a WTA 1000 event.

 

11)  Rail Tel launches PM-WANI based access to its WiFi

  • RailTel, a Mini Ratna PSU has launched Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) scheme based access to its Public WiFi services across 100 railway stations having 2,384 WiFi hotspots in 22 states.
  • To access this WiFi network, android users can download the mobile app ‘Wi-DOT’ available on Google Play Store.
  • This app has been developed in close coordination with C-DOT.

 

12) New UK India Industry Taskforce launched to facilitate free trade deal

  • A new UK India Industry Taskforce was launched on 9 May 2022.
  • It is a joint commission to increase cross-industry collaboration and push the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) over the line.
  • The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have created the new taskforce as part of an MoU.

 

13) Inox Wind board approves IPO for arm Inox Green Energy

  • Inox Wind’s board has approved proposal for the firm’s subsidiary Inox Green Energy Services to raise funds of about 900 crores through an initial public offering (IPO).
  • The proposed IPO will comprise fresh issuance of equity shares aggregating up to Rs 500 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) of equity shares by certain shareholders to the tune of Rs 400 crore.

 

14) Adani Group acquires franchise in UAE T20 League

  • Adani Sportsline, a part of the Adani Group, has acquired the rights to own and operate a franchise in UAE T20 League.
  • Licensed by the Emirates Cricket Board, the UAE T20 League will be an annual event that will feature six teams competing in a 34-match event.
  • Reliance Industries Limited, Lancer Capital, GMR Group and Capri Global have acquired a team each in the UAE T20 League.

 

15) NMCG organises webinar on Waste Water Management

  • The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) organized the 6th edition of the monthly ‘Webinar with Universities’ series on ‘Igniting Young Minds, Rejuvenating Rivers’ on 9 May 2022.
  • The theme for the webinar was ‘Waste Water Management!
  • The session was presided over by G. Asok Kumar, Director General NMCG.

 

16) RBI approves merger of Equitas Holdings and Equitas SFB

  • Equitas Small Finance Bank and Equitas Holdings Ltd have been given RBI’s no-objection to their proposal of amalgamation, subject to conditions.
  • According to RBI conditions laid down for SFBS in June 2016 equity shares of SFBS should be listed on recognised stock exchange(s) within three years from the date the net worth of SFB reaches Rs 500 crore.

 

17) Lt General Amardeep Singh Aujla takes over as GoC 15 Corps

  • Lieutenant General Amardeep Singh Aujla has taken over as General officer Commanding of the strategic Chinar Corps of the Indian Army from Lt Gen D P Pandey.
  • Lt Gen Pandey’s contribution to peace and stability in Kashmir was recognized by the ‘Uttam Yudh Seva Medal’ (UYSM) award by President Ram Nath Kovind on Republic Day 2022.
