1) President signs four Acts-Business Journal
- President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to four Acts passed by Parliament during the budget session.
- They include the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Act, the Chartered Accountants, the Cost And Works Accountants And The Company Secretaries (Amendment) Act and the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act.
2) Finland Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintila meets Jitendra Singh
- Finland Minister of Economic Affairs, Mika Lintila, on 20 Apr 22, met Union Minister of State Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
- Both announced the decision to establish an Indo-Finnish Virtual Network Centre on Quantum Computing.
- An MoU to this effect was also signed.
- Lintila also informed that Finnish companies will partner with India for carbon-neutral technologies.
3) US-based EV maker Biliti to set up plant in Telangana worth $150 mn
- US-based Biliti Electric (Biliti) will set up the world’s largest electric three-wheeler factory in Telangana with an investment of $150 million (1,144 crores).
- It will have a production capacity of 2.40 lakh electric vehicles (EVS) each year.
- The new plant is estimated to drive private investment of USD 150 million and create over 3,000 jobs in the state.
4) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on 3-day visit to Vietnam
- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reached Hanoi on 19 April 2022, on a three-day visit to Vietnam.
- He is leading a 13-member Indian parliamentary delegation.
- On the first day of the visit, he held bilateral meetings with President of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Vuong Dinh Hue,
5) IndusInd Bank bags global ‘Celent Model Bank’ Award
- IndusInd Bank has been awarded the global ‘Celent Model Bank’ award under the category ‘Payments System Transformation!
- It has been awarded for building Enterprise Payments Hub (EPH).
- Under the initiative, IndusInd Bank has successfully designed a solution that will cut down on transaction costs and improve operation as well as customer experience, across all transaction points.
6) Govt inks loan pact with ADB for development projects in Agartala
- The central government has inked a pact with Asian Development Bank for USD 61 million (around Rs 454 crore) loan to fund development projects in Agartala, Tripura.
- It will help improve livability, harness technology and promote new developments to accommodate the expanding population in Agartala city.
- The project will construct 23 km of climate-resilient urban roads.
7) BharatPe appoints Smriti Handa as Chief Human Resources Officer
- BharatPe has brought on board Smriti Handa as Chief Human Resources Officer.
- This is the first key leadership appointment for the company for 2022.
- Handa has previously worked at organizations like Reckitt, Philips, and Airtel, in global and local roles.
- Prior to joining Bharat Pe, she was HR head, Reckitt Hygiene- SoA, before taking over as Global Talent Acquisition Director.
8) 20th edition of India-France Joint Staff talks conclude
- The 20th India-France Joint Staff talks concluded in Paris on 20 Apr’22.
- The talks have been established to enhance defence cooperation between the two countries through regular talks at the strategic and operational levels.
- The discussions focused on new initiatives under the ambit of the existing bilateral defence cooperation mechanism and strengthening ongoing defence engagements.
9) National Metallurgist Award 2021 presented on 20 April 2022
- The Union Steel Ministry hosted the National Metallurgist Award 2021 in New Delhi on 20 April 2022.
- It was held to recognize the outstanding contribution of metallurgists and engineers in the field of iron and steel.
- The awards were given under the categories Lifetime Achievement Award, National Metallurgist Award, Award for R&D in the Iron & Steel Sector, etc.

10) Vagsheer, the last of six submarines under Project 75, launched
- The Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders on 20 April 2022, launched INS Vagsheer, the last of the six submarines under Project 75.
- The submarine was launched by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar.
- Named after sandfish, a deadly deep water sea predator of the Indian Ocean, the first submarine ‘Vagsheer’ was commissioned in December 1974.
- It was decommissioned in April 1997.
11) Zomato and Swiggy invest in UrbanPiper’s $24 mn Series B funding round
- UrbanPiper, a restaurant management platform, has raised $24 million in Series B funding round led by Sequoia Capital India and Tiger Global, along with the participation of Swiggy and Zomato.
- Founded in 2015 by Saurabh Gupta, Anirban Majumdar, and Manav Gupta in Bengaluru, UrbanPiper has raised around $15 million in equity financing, excluding the current round.
12) National Civil Services Day: 21 April
- India observes National Civil Services Day on April 21 every year.
- It is celebrated to commemorate the day when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, first Home Minister of Independent India addressed probationers of Administrative Services Officers at Delhi’s Metcalf House in 1947.
- PM Modi will confer Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration on the occasion on 21 April 2022.
13) RBI unveils large exposures framework for Upper Layer NBFCs
- RBI has announced a slew of regulatory changes for non-banking lenders by amending the Oct 2021 circulars on scale-based regulations.
- It issued four circulars in April 2022 including large exposures framework for NBFCs.
- The sum of all the exposure value of an NBFC (Non-Banking Financial Company) to a single counterparty cannot exceed 20% of its available eligible capital base at all times.
14) IFSCA executes MoU with National Insurance Academy (NIA)
- The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has entered into an MoU with the National Insurance Academy (NIA).
- It has been signed with the objective of capacity building and providing a skilled talent pool in the insurance sector in IFSCs.
- With the focus to address needs of IFSC Insurance entities, IFSCA had already executed an MoU with Insurance Institute of India (III).
15) 3 Greco Roman Indian wrestlers win bronze medals in wrestling
- Wrestlers of India, including Sunil Kumar, won bronze medals on 19 April 2022 on the first day of the Asian Wrestling Championship.
- This is for the second time that Sunil has earned a podium finish at the Asian championships, having won the 87 kg title in the 2020 edition.
- In the 55kg competition, Arjun Halakurki defeated Davaabandi Munkh Erdene to win the bronze medal.
16) HDFC to sell 10% stake in HDFC Capital to ADIA
- HDFC Ltd. has entered a binding agreement to sell a 10% stake in wholly-owned subsidiary HDFC Capital to an arm of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) for ₹184 cr.
- ADIA is also the primary investor in the alternative investment funds managed by HDFC Capital.
- It is aligned with govt’s goal to increase housing supply and support the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – ‘Housing for All’ initiative.
17) Ministry of Defence signs MoUs with Ministry of AYUSH
- Two MoUs have been signed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) with the Ministry of AYUSH.
- One is for starting Ayurveda Centres at 37 cantonment hospitals and another is for starting Ayurveda Centres at 12 Military Hospitals of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
- These MoUs were signed during the Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit, in Gujarat, being held from April 20-22, 2022.
18) Indian GM Gukesh wins title at La Roda International tourney
- India’s youngest Grandmaster D Gukesh emerged victorious in the 48th La Roda International Open Chess tournament, scoring eight points from nine rounds.
- He defeated Israel’s Victor Mikhalevski in the final round on 17 April 2022.
- Gukesh’s compatriot R Praggnanandhaa, took the third spot.
- He finished with seven points but won the third prize on the basis of a better tie-break score.
19) Nation’s first portable solar rooftop system unveiled in Gandhinagar
- India’s first portable solar rooftop system was inaugurated at Swaminarayan Akshardham temple complex in Gandhinagar on 18 April 2022.
- The installation of 10 PV Port systems in the temple complex has been supported by the German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit.
- The PV Ports have been manufactured by New Delhi-based Servotech Power Systems Ltd.
20) Monetary transmission to lending rates gained traction with EBLR
- RBI’s endeavour to improve monetary policy transmission by banks has gained traction.
- This was given in an article published in the RBI Bulletin April 2022.
- Monetary policy transmission to lending and deposit rates has improved in the external benchmark linked lending rate (EBLR) regime in October 2019.
21) IAF successfully test-fires BrahMos missile from Su30-Mkl fighter jet
- The Indian Air Force (IAF) on 19 April 2022 successfully test-fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from a Sukhoi fighter jet on the Eastern seaboard.
- The firing of the missile was carried out in coordination with the Indian Navy.
- BrahMos missile flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost three times the speed of sound.
- They can be launched from submarines, aircraft, and land platforms.
