2025 recorded highest ocean heat content in modern history.
Study published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.
Key findings:
- Ocean absorbed 23 zettajoules of heat
- Equivalent to 37 years of global energy consumption (2023 levels)
- Upper 2000 metres of ocean warmest on record
- 16% of ocean surface saw warmest year ever
- 33% ranked among top three warmest years
