1) Bola Tinubu wins Nigeria’s presidential election

  • Bola Tinubu was declared the winner and sworn in as President of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, in March 2023.
  • He is a former governor of Lagos state.
  • Tinubu received 8.79 million votes, surpassing Atiku Abubakar, the leading competitor, who received 6.98 million.
  • President Muhammadu Buhari is stepping down after two terms in office.

 

2) Lt Gen Suchindra Kumar takes charge as Vice Chief of the Army Staff

  • Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar has assumed the appointment of the Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 1 March 2023.
  • He has taken over the appointment from Lieutenant General BS Raju who has taken over the reins of Jaipur based Sapta Shakti Command.
  • Prior to this, he was tenanting the appointment of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) at Army HQ.

 

3) G20 Foreign Ministers meeting to begin from 1st March 2023

  • G20 Foreign Ministers meeting will be held in New Delhi from 1st to 2nd March 2023.
  • During the event, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and several dignitaries are scheduled to share their perspectives on the emerging global challenges and international matters.
  • The global meeting of the foreign ministers comes days after a meeting of finance chiefs of the bloc in Bengaluru.

 

4) Aizawl to host the second B20 event from 1-3 March 2023

  • Aizawl will host the 2nd of 4 B20 India events scheduled in the northeast from 1-3 March’23.
  • Business 20 (B20) is the official G20 dialogue forum for the global business community.
  • B20 represents the G20 business community and mobilises views of global business leaders on global economic and trade governance.
  • During the Summit, the B20 sends its final recommendations to the G20 Presidency.

 

5) India wins GSMA Government Leadership Award 2023

  • GSM Association (GSMA) has conferred Government Leadership Award 2023 to India for implementing best practices in telecom policy and regulation.
  • GSMA, which represents more than 750 mobile operators and 400 companies in the telecom ecosystem, recognizes one country every year.
  • India was declared winner in the ceremony held at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona on 27 Feb, 2023.

 

6) Zero Discrimination Day: 1 March

  • Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated on 1 March each year.
  • The day was first celebrated on March 1, 2014.
  • It was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé.
  • The theme for 2023 is Zero Discrimination Day is “Save lives: Decriminalise”,
  • UNAIDS is highlighting how the decriminalization of key populations and people living with HIV saves lives.

 

7) Exhibition on International Year of Millets organized in Goa

  • Central Bureau of Communication, Goa organized a Multimedia exhibition on International Year of Millets in Panaji, on 28 Feb 2023.
  • Open to public till 3rd March, the exhibition aims to educate visitors about the importance of millets and encourage their inclusion in daily diets.
  • Millets are small-grained, annual, warm-weather cereals belonging to grass family.

 

8) India’s GDP registered growth of 4.4% in third quarter

  • India’s GDP registered a growth of 4.4% in the October-December third quarter of the current fiscal (FY2023).
  • GDP in the third quarter of 2022-23 is estimated at Rs 40.19 lakh crore, as against Rs 38.51 lakh crore in third quarter of 2021-22.
  • For the 2022-23 fiscal, the real GDP is estimated to grow at 7 percent as compared to 9.1 percent in 2021-22.

 

9) 47th Civil Accounts Day to be celebrated in New Delhi on 1st March

  • Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary will be the Chief Guest on the occasion.
  • The Indian Civil Accounts Service was constituted in 1976, after the the maintenance of Accounts of the Union government was separated from that of Audit.
  • Consequently, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India was divested with this responsibility.
