1) RBI allows AU Small Finance Bank to deal with foreign exchange

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted permission to AU Small Finance Bank to deal in foreign exchange.
  • The bank can now offer services such as outward remittances, letter of credit (LC), bank guarantees, and foreign currency loans to its customers.
  • AU Small Finance Bank has become the 26th bank in India to be authorized to deal in foreign exchange.

 

2) Rare Hybrid Solar Eclipse to be observed on 20 April 2023

  • A rare hybrid solar eclipse is set to occur on 20 April 2023, visible from parts of South America, Africa, and Antarctica.
  • This kind of eclipse is also known as the Ningaloo Eclipse.
  • It appears as both an annular and a total eclipse at different points on Earth.
  • In an annular eclipse, the moon appears smaller than the sun and creates a “ring of fire” around the

 

3) Indian Army signs MoU with Tezpur University

  • The Indian Army has signed an MOU with Tezpur University to provide Chinese language training to army personnel.
  • The move is aimed at improving the army’s communication and operational capabilities along the India-China border.
  • The language training will include both. basic and advanced levels and cover aspects such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

 

4) Windfall Tax on oil production to be reintroduced

  • The Indian govt has reintroduced a windfall tax on oil produced by state-owned ONGC and other companies.
  • The tax will be levied when crude oil prices exceed a certain level and will be applicable to both public and private sector oil producers.
  • In a separate move, the government has also decided to levy zero tax on the export of diesel to promote exports and reduce domestic inventories.

 

5) 8th India-Thailand Defence Dialogue to be held in Bangkok on April 20

  • The 8th India-Thailand Defence Dialogue will be held in Bangkok on 20 April 2023.
  • Special Secretary in the Ministry of Defence Nivedita Shukla Verma will co-chair the meeting with Deputy Permanent Secretary for Defence, Thailand General Nuchit Sribunsong.
  • During the dialogue, they will review the defence cooperation and explore new initiatives to further strengthen bilateral engagements.

 

6) Government to introduce Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023

  • The Indian government has decided to introduce the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023 to tackle piracy in the film industry.
  • The bill proposes stricter penalties for piracy-related offenses, including imprisonment and hefty fines.
  • It also aims to establish a framework for the certification of cinematograph films and regulate their exhibition and distribution.

 

7) PM Modi to inaugurate first Global Buddhist Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first Global Buddhist Summit in New Delhi on April 20, 2023.
  • The Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation will host the two-day Summit.
  • The theme of the Summit is Responses to Contemporary Challenges: Philosophy to Praxis.
  • Leaders from over 20 countries will participate in the summit.

 

8) Two-day Millet Mahotsav to begin in Jodhpur, Rajasthan

  • Jodhpur is hosting a two-day Millet Mahotsav to showcase the diversity of millets and promote sustainable agriculture from 20 April 2023.
  • The event will feature exhibitions, seminars, and cultural programs highlighting the nutritional, environmental, and economic benefits of millets.
  • An exhibition is also being set up and being organized by the Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
