1) OPEC Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo passes away
- The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo passed away on 6 July 2022.
- Barkindo, who was 63 years old, was due to step down at the end of July 2022 after 6 years as OPEC’s secretary-general.
- He was scheduled to be replaced by Kuwait’s Haitham Al-Ghais in August 2022.
- Barkindo began his career with the Nigerian Mining Corporation in 1982.
2) Bhupender Yadav launches “Hariyali Mahotsav” in New Delhi
- Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav on 8 July 2022 launched “Hariyali Mahotsav” – Tree Festival in New Delhi.
- The event was organised to create awareness about the importance of trees to protect our environment for present as well as future generations.
- The festival involves planting 75 saplings in 75 urban forest spaces across the country.
3) Axis bank signs MoU with Indian Air Force to manage salary accounts
- Axis Bank has signed an MOU with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to manage the salary accounts of the defence personnel.
- These salary accounts will have benefits such as a personal accidental cover of up to Rs 56 lakh & air accident cover of Rs 1 crore among others.
- The Axis bank will offer ‘defence service salary package’ under its ‘Power Salute’ initiative.
4) Ashwini Vaishnaw participates in 8th Meeting of BRICS
- The 8th Meeting of BRICS Communications Ministers was held in virtual mode on 6 July 2022 under the presidency of China.
- Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, participated in the meeting.
- The Ministers decided to work in the field of ICTs in areas identified at the 14th BRICS Summit.
- The Ministers also adopted a Declaration.
5) Ex Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe assassinated
- Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe passed away in July 2022 after being shot twice at a campaign event in the Nara region.
- Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, held office in 2006 for one year and again from 2012 to 2020.
- Abe also served as Chief Cabinet Secretary from 2005 to 2006 under Junichiro Koizumi and was briefly leader of the opposition in 2012.
6) Sikkim & West Bengal sign agreement to ease travel for tourists
- The governments of West Bengal (WB) & Sikkim have signed an agreement to help tourists travel between the 2 states with ease.
- The agreement will allow West Bengal-registered commercial vehicles to drop tourists at their hotels in different destinations of Sikkim.
- Earlier, there were restrictions on WB-registered vehicles in Sikkim.
- This agreement will help boost tourism between the 2 states
7) Nokia partners with IISc to set up centre of excellence
- Nokia has announced a collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru to set up the Nokia Centre of Excellence (CoE).
- The COE will promote inter-disciplinary research involving robotics and advanced communication technologies in 5G and Al.
- It will also develop use cases across industrial automation, agriculture, and disaster management.
8) Number of undernourished people in India declines to 224.3 million: UN
- The number of undernourished people in India. has declined in the last 15 years to 224.3 million in 2019-2021, according to a UN report.
- The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 report, said that the number of people affected by hunger globally rose to as many as 828 million in 2021.
- Number of obese adults in India, grew to 34.3 million in 2016 from 25.2 million in 2012.
9) ‘Getting the Bread: The Gen-Z Way to Success’ book released
- Prarthna Batra’s debut book titled ‘Getting the Bread: The Gen-Z Way to Success’ was launched by Sakshi Malik on 7 July 2022.
- Prarthna is also the co-founder of Lajja Diaries – an online platform, to felicitate the gender discourse on feminism and women’s rights in India.
- She was featured in the February 2021 edition of Blub World in the young entrepreneur’s section.
10) Akasa Airlines gets Air Operator Certificate from DGCA
- The country’s newest airline Akasa Air on 7 July 2022 received the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
- The grant of AOC is the final step for an airline’s launch.
- Akasa Air will start commercial operations by the end of July 2022.
- It is backed by billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.
- Akasa Air founded in – 2021
11) Market Research Society of India elects Manish Makhijani as President
- Market Research Society of India (MRSI) has elected Manish Makhijani as its new President for the 2022-24 term.
- He is the Global Insights Director at Hindustan Unilever.
- He will take over from outgoing President Sandeep Arora (EVP and Global Head – Research & Analytics Solutions, Datamatics Global Services).
- MRSI also elected the new managing committee on 7 July 2022.
12) Virat Kohli at 13th position on ICC Test Rankings
- Former India captain Virat Kohli has dropped four places in the ICC Test rankings.
- He is now 13th in the batting rankings.
- It is for the first time in six years that Kohli has found himself out of top 10 in the Test rankings.
- Rishabh Pant moved up 6 places and reached a career-best fifth position in the rankings.
- England batter Joe Roott was at the top of the rankings with 923 points.
13) Rohit Sharma becomes first captain to record 13 successive T201 wins
- Rohit Sharma became the first captain in cricketing history to win 13 consecutive T20ls.
- Rohit achieved this feat during the first T201 match of the three-match series against England on 7 July 2022 at Southampton.
- Hardik Pandya took India’s total to 198/8 in the first innings.
- Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Deepak Hooda also scored 24, 39, and 33 runs, respectively.
14) Delhi govt launches ‘Mission Kushal Karmi’ programme
- Delhi government on 6 July 2022 launched ‘Mission Kushal Karmi’ programme to upgrade the skills of construction workers.
- The programme was launched by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
- The objective of this programme is to provide on-the-job skill development training to construction workers.
- Delhi govt aims to train 2 lakh workers in a year under this programme.
15) RBI imposes penalties on Federal Bank & Bank of India
- Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 8 July 2022 imposed a penalty of Rs 5.72 crore on Federal Bank for deficiencies in regulatory compliance.
- RBI also imposed a penalty of Rs 70 lakh on Bank of India for non-compliance with certain provisions of Know Your Customer (KYC) norms.
- RBI on 4 July 2022 also imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1.05 crore on Kotak Mahindra Bank.
