1) INS Chennai participates in PASSEX 2023 with Royal Saudi Navy
- INS Chennai participated in Passage Exercise (PASSEX) 2023 with the Royal Saudi Naval Ship HMS Al Jubail on August 5th, 2023.
- INS Chennai also conducted a port call to Jeddah from August 3rd to 5th to enhance defense alliances between India and Saudi Arabia.
- The Indian Navy has positioned its guided missile destroyer, INS Chennai, in the Red Sea to ensure secure maritime environments.
2) WTO’s WTSR 2023 Report: India ranked 18th in merchandise exports
- The World Trade Organization (WTO) released its 2023 edition of the World Trade Statistical Review (WTSR) in August 2023.
- India is ranked 18th among merchandise exports due to its diverse economy.
- India is also ranked 7th in the list of services exporters with exports of $309 billion and 4.4 per ent of global services trade share.
3) PLI launches direct incentive disbursement for Sales Force
- Postal Life Insurance (PLI), has initiated the ‘Direct Incentive Disbursement’ for its sales force in the Delhi and Uttarakhand circles.
- Through this feature, agents will be able . to seamlessly receive the transfer of their commissions from the previous month directly to their Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) Accounts.
- PLI has operated in the insurance sector since 1884.
4) Centre launches special skill initiative for the northeastern region
- The government has launched an initiative to create a skill-centric and industry-ready ecosystem in the northeastern region.
- The initiative is called ‘Transforming lives, building futures: Skill development and entrepreneurship in North-East’.
- The initiative will benefit 250,000 youth in the northeastern region by providing them with industry-relevant skill training programmes.
5) APEDA export first trial shipment of fresh pomegranate to USA via air
- Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the export of the first trial shipment of fresh pomegranate to the USA through an air route.
- The ‘Bhagwa’ variety of pomegranates from Maharashtra has substantial demand in overseas markets.
- India is the second-largest producer of horticulture crops.
6) India, Vietnam holds 5th joint Trade Sub-Commission meeting
- The 5th meeting of the India-Vietnam Joint Trade Sub-Commission (JTSC) was held in New Delhi on 8 August 2023.
- Vietnam is the 23rd largest global trade partner of India and the 5th largest among ASEAN countries with bilateral trade of USD 14.70 Billion during 2022-23.
- Vietnam accounts for 11.2 per cent of India’s total trade with ASEAN.
7) President of India inaugurates spiritual conference at Auroville
- The President of India, Droupadi Murmu inaugurated a conference on ‘Aspiring for Supermind in the City of Evolving Consciousness’ at Auroville, Tamil Nadu on 8 August 2023.
- She also visited the Matrimandir and a city exhibition at Auroville.
- The purpose of the conference is to explore & discuss the concept of supermind and its relevance in the context of the evolving consciousness.
8) Parliament passes National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill, 2023
- Parliament, on 8 August 2023, passes the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission (NNMC) Bill, 2023 for comprehensive reforms in the nursing sector.
- The Act will establish National and State Commissions to regulate nursing education and services.
- The Act will facilitate the global mobility and employability of Indian nurses.
- It will also encourage innovation in nursing education.
9) Competition Commission approves Tata Capital merger plan
- The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the merger of Tata Cleantech Capital Limited (TCCL) and Tata Capital Financial Services Limited (TCFSL) into Tata Capital Limited (TCL).
- TCL is registered with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as a Systematically Important Non-Deposit Accepting Core Investment Company (CIC).
- TCCL engages in the business of providing cash-flow-based finance.
10) 3rd G20 anti-corruption meet begins on August 9 in Kolkata
- The third and final meeting of the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) will be held in Kolkata from 9-11 August 2023.
- Over 154 delegates from G20 Members will attend the meeting.
- The meeting will be followed by the G20 Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting on 12th August 2023.
- Jitendra Singh, Minister of State will chair the G20 Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting.
11) Rajya Sabha passes Inter-Services Organisation Bill, 2023
- The Inter-Services Organisation (Command, Control & Discipline) Bill – 2023 was passed on August 8, 2023, by the Rajya Sabha and on August 4, 2023, by the Lok Sabha.
- The bill aims to give disciplinary and administrative powers to the Commanders of Inter-Services Organisations (ISOs).
- The ISO Bill-2023 shall be applicable to all personnel of the regular Army, Navy and Air force.
12) S Paramesh appointed as Additional Director General of Coast Guard
- S Paramesh has been appointed as Additional Director General Coast Guard on 8 August 2023.
- He is specialised in Navigation & Direction and his sea commands include all major vessels of ICG.
- He is a recipient of the President’s Tatrakshak Medal for Distinguished Service and was also awarded the Director General Coast Guard Commendation in 2012 and FOCINC (East) Commendation in 2009.
13) India to support Tuvalu’s clean water project with USD 700000 grant
- India will provide support worth 700,000 USD to a project in Tuvalu that will provide clean water to students, teachers, and school staff.
- The proposed concrete water cistern will have a capacity of 760 metric cubes.
- The project is in pursuance of the “Sagar Amrut Scholarship” scheme for the Pacific Island countries.
- The India-UN Development Partnership Fund was established in June 2017.
